Unit 1 Travel LanguageText1 The Academie Francasie has for decades been the watchdog over the French language. A few years ago, French sensitivity to the influx of English words became so great that law for the purification of French was adopted。
The law covers even technical applications。
For example,in theory, it is now compuslory in France to refer to the Boeing 747 as a gros-porteur, leasing as credit-bail,etc。
the list is very long and detailed and applies to all facets of life. Mr. Chirac, the French President, might well expand on this list and come up with some new French terms for words such as “internet” or “byte stream” just to name a couple。
The mind boggles at what the world might face。
2 Unfortunately (or perhaps not),the English language is not so protected. Quite apart from the unforgivable deviations from the king’s English prevlent in America, where “honour" is commonly written as “honor” and “night” as “nite," many well-tested has also been give new meanings, making communication somewhat difficult. For example, the boot of a car has become to be called a trunk – a word reserved in England for the main part of a tree。

He did it for two reasons. First, to get rid the confusion. The community of science has long been unable or unwilling to define primary publication. As a result, much of the literature is buried in meeting abstracts, obscure conference reports, government publications, or in books or journals of minuscule circulation. Other papers, in the same or slightly altered form, are published twice or more often; occasionally, this is the result of poor ethics on the part of the author, but more often it is the lack of definition as to which conference reports, books, and compilations are (or should be) primary publications and which are not redundancy and confusion result.

Unite 3 Doctor's Dilemma: Treat or Let Die?Abigail Trafford1。
Medical advances in wonder drugs, daring surgical procedures, radiation therapies, and intensive—care units have brought new life to thousands of people. Yet to many of them, modern medicine has become a double-edged sword。
2。
Doctor’s power to treat with an array of space—age techniques has outstripped the body's capacity to heal. More medical problems can be treated, but for many patients, there is little hope of recovery. Even the fundamental distinction between life and death has been blurred。
3。
Many Americans are caught in medical limbo, as was the South Korean boxer Duk Koo Kim,who was kept alive by artificial means after he had been knocked unconscious in a fight and his brain ceased to function。
With the permission of his family, doctors in Las Vegas disconnected the life-support machines and death quickly followed。

What are the major functions and effects of music in our life and society?
2. Are there any censorship regulations on songs and music in our country?
Read the title. Often the title functions as a label and tells you what the material is about. It establishes the overall topic or subject.
2. Read the introduction or opening paragraphs. The first few paragraphs of a piece of writing are usually introductory. The author may explain the subject, outline his or her ideas, or give some clues about his or her direction of thought. If the introduction is long, read only the first two or three paragraphs.

Eric Cantona, the Manchester United striker, will probably be suspended for the rest of the season after he attacked a spectator during the match against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last night.
The incident happened moments after Cantona had been sent off for kicking another player, his sixth send-off in 16 months.
As he walked off the field, a spectator was seen running down a gangway from some 20 rows back, apparently to shout abuse at Cantona, who suddenly turned, jumped over the wall and kicked out at the man, and then punched him.

ScriptGlobalization is a new term that has found a significant place in the lives of the people. By globalization, we mean shedding down the walls of distrust and the barriers of suspicion in between countries, to make a bridge where ideas and beliefs can cross the borders. Though globalization today primarily covers the economical side, the impact is not limited to the economy only. It actually affects every aspect of life, like cultural, social, psychological and of course, political. While globalization is seen as a sign of a hopeful future by some, there are others who believe that it can cause tremendous disaster for the world economy.◆Fast ReadingReference key:1. a hopeful future, a disaster for the world economy2. freedom of movement for goods and people3. global competition and cheap imports keep a lid on prices4. fresh ideas from abroad5. imports or production shifts abroad6. only the white-collar or richer people◆Intensive ReadingBackground InformationGlobalization:Globalization or (globalisation) is the process by which the people of the world are unified into a single society and function together.

Overview
Language is the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication. Humans acquire language through social interaction in early childhood. But some people may suffer from speech impairment; despite the success of the disability rights movement and the recognition that signing is no less a linguistic system than spoken language, “dumb” is still used as a term of abuse.

Overview
Text A is excerpted from The Story of My Life, Helen Keller’s autobiography. It portrays the wild child who is locked in the dark and silent prison of her own body. Keller reveals her frustration and rage, and takes the reader on the unforgettable journey of her education and breakthroughs into the world of communication. From the moment Keller recognizes the word “water” when her teacher finger spells the letters, we share her triumph as “that living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free!” She learned to “hear” people’s speech by reading their lips with her hands; her sense of touch had become extremely supple. She became proficient at using Braille and reading sign language with her hands as well.
