Dear Abby,
This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column (专栏) for many years. I need an outside opinion.
I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly-loved children---- all under age of 5 ------ and I am upset with some of their parenting ways.
For example:
They lock the doors to their children’s bedroom at night because “the children might get out of their beds and walk around the house, and we may not hear them.”
If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naughty word, all three are given hot sauce (热酱汁) in the mouth.
I know these parents love their children very much, but can these ways make them wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).
Gram
Dear Gram,
Children’s bedroom doors shouldn’t be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would be a nightmare .
Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a way only to make them grow up to hate each other.
Children who use naughty words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth ---- they should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the naughty word.
Abby

B. doesn’t love her three children
C. always punishes her children at night
D. often gives her children hot sauce

D. get others’ opinions about her daughter’s was as a mom
67. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Gram seems to care for her grandchildren very much.
B. Gram is against some of her daughter’s ways as a mom.

D. Abby agrees with Gram about her daughter’s ways as a mom.

During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives
of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they
were five years old and up. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother
would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty
years, during which chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.
This impo rtant change in women’s life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women economic (经济的) position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married their school-leaving age is sixteen. Many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born . Very many more afterwards return to fuller part-time work.. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage (婚姻), with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.
68. We are told that in a family about 1900_____
A. few children died before they were five
B. seven or eight children lived to be more than five
C. the youngest child would be fifteen
D. four or five children died when they were five
69. One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she______.
A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselves
B. does not like children herself
C. needn’t worry about food for her children
D. can be free from family duties when she reaches sixty
70. Many girls are now likely to_______.
A.give up their jobs for good after they are married
B.leave school as soon as they can
C.marry so that they can get a job
D.continue working until they are going to have a baby
71. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ____
A. stay at home after leaving school
B. marry men younger than themselves
C. start working again in life
D. marry while still at school
72. Now a husband probably_________.
A. plays a greater part in looking after children
B. helps his wife by doing much of the housework
C. feels dissatisfied with his part in the family
D. takes a part-time job so that he can help in the home

LONDON (Reuters)——Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food.
“Organic produce is always better,” Gold said, “The food is free of pesticides(农药), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally(本地)grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.” Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into
the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic produce? Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences----but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported (进口) to meet growing demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one thi rd every year, so it is a very fast-growing market.” said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business.

Dear editor,
I’m a student of Senior One. I don’t think my parents should buy a computer now. Those who have computers in my class are spending too much time on computer games. In my opinion there are many other ways to enjoy myself than playing games. If we don’t put our hearts into our work. We might fail in the entrance examinations. Besides, if you get a computer and don’t make full use of it, it’a just a waste of money. So I think that they don’t buy me a computer now.
Yours,
Li Hua
