It is a novel written by Theodore Dreiser and it is about a rural girl who came to the big city to find well-being. The general plot is this: Carrie was a beautiful girl and she loved the life of cities, so she came to Chicago to make a living, hoping that her sister would help her. However, grim reality shattered her. Her sister didn’t help her and she only found a job with low salary, What’s more, after a period of time in Chicago, she experienced unemployment and disease. When she was in desperation, she met a salesman Drouet and she then decided to be his mistress and later as a result of a greater desire, she became the mistress of Hurstwood, a hotel manager. Then, to some reasons, Hurstwood took her to New York, and after they came to New York, as a result of chance and her efforts, she became a star, got the upper reaches of society and realized her dream.After reading this novel, I found something interesting—the trajectories of Carrie’s and Hurstwood’s life are totally reversed. Carrie, although she was born in a poor condition and the path to pursue her better life was full of difficulties, she struggled to survive, to have batter life and finally she became a famous star of Broadway, getting a better life. 本书所蕴含的某些“精神”在很多社会都会受到争议。
即便在美国也是如此。
毕竟在当时年代，女人的社会地位是非常低的，而且社会对于婚姻关系的看法也比较保守。
但小说的女主Carrie竟然在婚前与男人同居，并与已婚男人私通，后来还成为一位著名演员，实在是太挑战人们的三观了。
所以小说的初版并不算顺利，而且删去了大量的两性描写。

After a period of odd jobs and a year at the University of Indiana, he became a Midwestern newspaper reporter and, in New York after 1894, a magazine feature writer. In 1892, married Sara White, but their marriage wasn’t happy, so they have been separated since 1909 and never officially divorcedSister Carrie （1900），his first and still highly regarded novel, was withheld from general distribution because of it was supposed amoral, and its commercial failure plunged him into financial distress and mental breakdown. Some reasons which caused the difficulties of publish can be seen from the social background of the society of that time. At the time, United States is experiencing a rapid social change, it was transforming from free capitalism transition to the monopoly capitalism. But on another, she was longing for a better life. And it’s also the same situation when she left Hursthood when he became poor. As for Drouet, the book tells us in regard to his pursuit of women, he meant them no harm, because he did not conceive of the relation which he hoped to hold with them as being harmful. He chased women not because he was a cold-blooded, dark, scheming villain, but because his inborn desire urged him to that as a chief delight. That’s the contradiction of Drouet’s nature.Most people say Sister Carrie’s story is a story of her American dream comes true. But I disagree with it. Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser’s revolutionary first novel, was published in 1900. The book tells us a story about a girl's pursuit of better life and her lost in pursuit of it.
Carrie,a girl from a low paid family in a little countryside,pure and pretty,timid and simple,boarded the train for Chicago in order to seek for her dream.On the train,Carrie came across with Drouet,who was a charming and flashy salesman. Hurstwood,a manager and also a married gentleman,fell in love with Carrie soon after their meeting with each other.He had done and sacrificed a lot for her but finally became a begger wandering in the street while Carrie succeeded. That’s a huge irony but real thing happened meanwhile, so the ending doomed to be miserable.
I can't say that she was cold blooded or hardhearted,she was just an ordinary girl who lost herself under the temptation of gorgeous material things.Her love to Hurstwood was based on money and social status.Her experience of struggling for better life made her lost the ability to love and the true happiness.She realized that she never get it,just as it reads:In your rocking chair,by your window,shall your dream such happiness as you may never feel.。
