The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great! But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine (咖啡因) in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much. Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee (OC) has limited (限制) its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least asstrong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. Just one box of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart problems. Science can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A 2002study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (紧张) levels and blood pressure in people — half of them pet owners — while they performed 5minutes of mental arithmetic (算术) or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed thetasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed (放松) around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be bec ause pets don’t judge.A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise overall — mostly with their dogs — and found it worth doing.1. In the first month of the Apple iPads release, 25million were sold! People all over the world use iPads for all sorts of different things, but one of their finest qualities is the ability to be a textbook. 1To begin with, iPads are less expensive. Textbooks become outdated and schools have to buy new books, but with an iPad schools can update them for free. 2 Schools don’t ha ve to spend $500 every year for iPads because they last a while and can be updated.3 Students usually have multiple classes, which results in multiple textbooks. Heavy backpacks filled with books can cause back problem. A solution to that is an iPad, which only weighs 1.33 pounds and can hold all of a student’s textbooks.Third, schools should get rid of their textbooks and get iPads because they have more capabilities. Some might think all of the apps are distracting, but the apps actually make iPads more efficient. 4 Textbooks cannot do those tasks, but iPads can easily do them with just a tap of the fingertip. Lastly, iPads are a better choice for schools instead of textbooks because these devices allow students to access their learning anywhere at any time. 5 With iPads, they find it easier to get their homework done.In conclusion, schools should get rid of their clumsy textbooks and switch to iPads. iPads have allowed this generation to have their entire backpack in the palm of their hands.6. When a follow-up check was done, however, her education certificate(证书) was discovered to be an unreal one. This was a bit of an embarrassment for the employers. A dilemma, one might say. If she were hired because of her excellent performance, she still wouldn't have the qualifications on paper. But, if she were dropped because she didn't meet the education requirements, they would lose a good worker. Tough problem! While Mei's future hangs in the balance, the public having learned of the case got involved. Some people said the Bureau should employ her, since results are the only important thing. “After all, ability is more important than a diploma, ”said one office worker.Others, however, have attacked Mei's dishonesty. They said that morality was, after all, more important than talent, especially in the case of a government position. Mei wasn't honest, so she shouldn't be hired. But, Shen Ronghua, the head of the Shanghai Public Administration and Human Resources Institute, tries to be a bit more philosophical.“There is still a sort of 'diploma means this' prejudice among people,” Shen explains, “Many employers regard a diploma as the only sign of ability and talent.”So, with this in mind, people may pay little attention to whether someone has real ability or not. They turn to chasing a diploma instead. The unreal diploma is the natural product of this thought. The conclusion? "China needs a new human resource system. The new system will not define a person only by his or her diploma, " Shen says.36.What's the meaning of the underlined word “dilemma” in Paragraph Four?A. A problem easy to deal with or solve.B. Can A Diploma Be All There Is.In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition(学会) of each new skill---the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is usual that parents hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, and a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters, other are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality (准时) for meals. In general, the controls imposed (强加的) represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parent teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is not foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.40.Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ________.A. should be avoidedB. is universal among parentsC. sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD. will make him lose interest in learning new things41.When children are learning new skills, parents should _________.A. encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB. not expect too much of themC. achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD. create as many learning opportunities as possible42.The second paragraph mainly tells us_________.A. parents should be strict with their childrenB. parents controls satisfy only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation43.In moral matters, parents should _________.A. observe the rules themselvesB. be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC. forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD. satisfy their children’s needsEver since news of widespread food recalls caused by a carcinogenic dye(颜料)broke, there has been confusion over possible links to the country of the same name, but Sudan officials say there is no connection whatever.Sudan 1 is a red industrial dye that has been found in some chilli powder, but was banned in food products across the European Union (EU) in July .Since the ban was put in place, EU officials have been striving to remove some food products from the shelves. So far 580 products have been recalled.Last week Sudan’s Embassy in the United Kingdom asked the Food Standards Agency (FSA) for clarification of the origin of the dye’s name.Omaima Mahmoud Al Sharief, a press official at Sudan’s Embassy in China, explained the purpose of the inquiry was to clear up any misunderstanding over links between the country and the poisonous dye."We want to keep an eye on every detail and avoid any misunderstanding there," she said. "Our embassy to Britain asked them how the dye got that name and whether the dye had something to do with our country. But they told us there was no relationship."The FSA, an independent food security watchdog in Britain, received a letter from the Sudanese embassy last week."They asked us why the dye is named Sudan, however, we also do not know how it got the name," she said. "People found the dye in 1883 and gave it the name. Nobody knows the reason, and we cannot give any explanation before we find out."Sudan dyes, which include Sudan 1 to 4, are red dyes used for colouring solvents(溶剂), oils, waxes, petrol, and shoe and floor polishes. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end withcommercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. "Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.” Drink Good Wet Root Beer.” Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of "You Need It! Buy It Now!"The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it’s fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless (鲁莽的)or daring, the ride can be as thrilling (惊心动魄的)as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left hand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrests even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.48.According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip?A. Buses on the road.B. Films on television.C. By day, this group of young women works executive jobs, but by night they climb buildings so they can spend the night on the roof. "It's a good way to release our pressure. You feel relaxed when you're sitting on the roof, looking up to the sky and chatting with intimate(亲密的)friends," said Gong Ying, 25.The stress of work is not just limited to people in Shanghai. A recently-opened restaurant in Beijing encourages customers to smash plates - as long as they are willing to pay to replace them. Though there has been some debate about the extravagance(奢侈)of such services, some psychologists say the activity reflects the desire of some white-collar workers to vent their angst. Some workers even appear eager to return to their childhoods. This May, hundreds of people took part in a festival in which adults pretended to be children. It was an adults-only event, and participants could read comics and eat sweets all day.Scenic places such as parks and rivers can also help people relax and put things in perspective. But a cemetery? Cemetery companies in Shanghai organized visits to local graveyards for stressed-out workers in March. The participants were taken to quiet spots in the cemetery where they could contemplate (考虑)life and their futures.Roof-camper Chen Bin, an IT marketing professional, said she had camped out on a rooftop about 30 times. When she's not sleeping out under the stars, she also has several other adrenalin-fueled interests, such as downhill racing and paragliding."Pressure may bring us distress, but it doesn't mean we can't find ways out," Chen says. "Life should be imaginative."六、书面表达64.根据下面所给信息,给China Daily写一篇英语报道,介绍此次活动,并说说你的看法。

When I asked her about working again, she would tell me to focus on achieving my dream. I knew she had once dreamed for herself. For years, I watched het effortlessly light up conversations with both strangers and family. Her empathy and ability to reach the heart could make anyone laugh, even when the story itself did not apply to them at all. “Mom, have you ever thought about being a stan d-up comedian?” “It is too late for me, son,” she responded, laughing at the idea. I could not bear to watch her struggle between ambition and doubt. Her birthday was coming up. Although I had already bought her a present, I knew what I actually wanted to give her. I placed little notes of encouragement inside the present. I asked my family and her friends to do the same. Eventually I had collected 146 notes, and each with the same sentiment: “You are humorous, full of life, and ready to take on the stage.”On the day of her birthday, my mom unwrapped my present. She was not surprised as she had hinted at it for long. But then she saw those little notes. She started to weep with her hands full of notes. She could not believe the support was real.Within two months, my mom gave her first performance in a New York comedy club. I have read the notes countless times with my mom. They are framed and line the walls of her new office space that she rented with the profits she made from working as a professional comedian. But what if the way a word sounds could arouse some other feature of an object, like its shape?Marcus Perlman, a lecturer at the University of Birmingham, says that a century ago, linguists (语言学家) insisted that the words of objects don’t necessarily sound like the very things. There’s nothing doggy-sounding about the word dog or catlike-sounding about the word cat. But there’s plenty of evidence now proving it false. To further explore this connection, Perlman and his colleagues turned to something called the bouba/kiki effect. What it is about is that when you see two shapes-one looks like a cloud, kind of roundish, and the other one is more spiky (尖形的), like a star-and when you’re asked to say which one is bouba, you will be more likely to point to a rounded one and, for kiki, to a spiky one. One explanation for the effect could be the appearance of the letters. The round shape of b-o-u-b-a might arouse the sense of roundness. But what happens when you don’t see the words but hear them?In a following test, participants were told to look at the two shapes and then listen to the sound: either bouba or kiki. Whatever their native language is, most participants said the rounder shape was bouba and the spiky one was kiki. This suggests that the effect seems to be driven by some correspondence (对应关系) between the spoken words and the shapes, which might bring us closer to how the first words came.8. What may Marcus Parlman believe about the words of objects?A.Words sounding like objects don’t exist.B.Words don’t have to so und like objects.C.Words of objects are difficult to understand. D.Words pronunciation is connected to objects.9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A.The distinction between various shapes. B.The explanation of the bouba/kiki effect.C.The comparison between bouba and kiki. D.The introduction to the bouba/kiki effect.10. Which shape may the participants choose after hearing the “bauba” sound?A.A star. B.A circle. C.A pyramid. D.A diamond. 11. What is suggested in the text?A.Different languages may have the same origins.B.The word bouba or kiki can be found in languages.C.The effect may help understand the origin of language.D.The secret of language formation has been discovered. We all sometimes behave in ways that seem to conflict with our goals and intentions. One person might wish to spend more time with family but instead find themselves mindlessly browsing social media. Another may repeatedly ignore their alarm and miss their morning workout. If we only had more willpower, the conventional wisdom goes, we could eat healthier, exercise regularly, and spend more time with loved ones. However, in Determined: A Science of Life without Free Will, scientist Robert Sapolsky argues that such choices are actually determined by factors beyond our control.Sapolsky demonstrates in his book how various factors influence our intentions and actions. He describes scientific evidence that those influences may occur minutes, hours, or days before our actions; some may even begin years earlier. For example, people raised in a collectivist culture tend to avoid obstacles (障碍) when walking whereas those raised in independent cultures will remove the obstacles. In particular, Sapolsky argues against the claim that “luck” evens (均等) out over time, with fortune and misfortune striking most people in equal measure, an idea favored by others. Instead, he provides convincing examples that many who are born “unlucky” have little chance of getting ahead.Although Sapolsky is careful not to confuse determinism with the inability to affect change in the world, his unclear attitude toward how determinism might coexist with free will is one of the book’s weak points. Nonetheless, this book is worth reading. Better yet, pair it with Kevin Mitchell’s book Free Agents: How Evolution Gave Us Free Will, which makes the opposite argument, and then, decide for yourself whether you had a choice to do so or it was all predetermined.12. How is the topic introduced in the first paragraph?A.By giving examples. B.By listing statistics.C.By raising arguments. D.By drawing conclusions.13. According to Sapolsky, what determine(s) our choices and actions?A.Level of willpower. B.Random luck.C.Uncontrollable elements. D.Conventional wisdom.14. What does the underlined word “collectivist” mean?A.Low-esteemed. B.Determined. C.Self-centered. D.Cooperative.15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the passage?A.Exploration on Free Will B.Wisdom in Decision MakingC.Views on Determinism and Free Will D.Conflicts between Goals and Choices Shopping in the sales feels like a subtle way to spend. Lower prices naturally equal money saved. 16 Sometimes you think you’re getting a bargain, but actually you’re paying more than you need to. So, follow the tips below an d you’ll hopefully be on the right track.Only buy essentials. You might have been tempted to buy a much higher item than you actually need, simply because we’re dazzled by the size of the discount. So despite the savings made on the full price item, it’s actually a huge waste of cash. 17 You can even have a “need” note which you add to regularly, allowing you to focus your shopping during the sales.18 Just because there’s a sale running with a lower price, doesn’t mean you can scramble for the goods immediately. If you can wait, some price history websites are a great way to get a sense of any regularly occurring price variations. Certain items will have a life cycle too. Christmas cards anddecorations are bargains in January while TVs tend to be at their lowest prices in the early summer when the newer models are released. 19 So this is only a strategy for non-essentials.Check for alternatives. Finally, even if you think you’ve got the best price out there-or at least one you’re happy to pay-it’s worth checking you’re not overpaying still when compared to similar products. 20 . That could mean staying away from high-end brands, looking for secondhand items or trying a different but similar style. My grandmother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. 广东省惠州市2020-2021学年高三上学期第三次调研考试英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读选择Different countries have different tipping customs. When you travel, you need to know how to tip in the country that you’re in; otherwise you’ll leave servers angry everywhere you go.Here are just a few guidelines to tipping around the world.BrazilThere will always be a standard 10% service charge added to your bill, and you won’t necessarily have to tip. If you do feel like being generous, an extra 5-10% will really make your server very happy. Just remember to do this as skillfully as possible—Brazilians don’t make a big show of this.DubaiIn Dubai it’s a rule for restaurants to charge 10% tip on all restaurant and bar bills. You can add a couple of dirhams(迪拉姆,货币单位)to this if you feel like it. Waiters are not paid very much in Dubai, so it is always very appreciated.GermanyGerman bars and restaurants will include the tip as part of what you owe, but that’s not all you have to pay. It is a custom to round the bill up after that, usually to the euro. This can be anywhere from 5-10%. When it’s time to settle up, you won’t get a bill: your waiter tells you the total and then you tell them how much you want to pay, including your “tip”, and hand over the money.Czech RepublicWhile locals in the Czech Republic don’t leave tips, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.Foreign tourists are definitely expected to leave some kind of tip for service—as long as you’re in a high tourist traffic area, like Prague f or instance. The standard tip is 10%.IndiaIf you like the service, go ahead and tip your server 5-10%. You have to adjust that amount though, based on how big the meal you’re eating is. If the bill is for a small meal, and totals less than 300 rupees, tip the full 10%. If the bill is higher, tip towards the 5%.1.In which country do customers have to tip at least 10% for the service?A.Dubai B.IndiaC.Germany D.Czech Republic2.Which country has different tip cultures between citizens and foreigners?A.Dubai B.GermanyC.India D.Czech Republic3.If your bill is 2000 rupees in India, it is proper for you to tip________ rupees.A.10 B.80C.120 D.200My nephew came for a visit one hot, July weekend. I persuaded him to stay inside by joining him in a Nintendo game. After being mercilessly defeated by a more experienced player, I suggested that we relax for a while. He slipped out of the room and I caught a few moments of peace and quiet.“Look, Alice,” he said enthusiastically as he ran over to the cha ir where I was recovering. “I found a kite. Could we go outside and fly it?”Glancing out of a nearby window, I noticed there was not a breeze (微风). “I'm sorry, Tripper,” I said, sad to see his disappointed eyes, but thankful for the short period of rest f rom more activities. “The wind is not blowing today. The kite won’t fly.”The determined 10-year-old replied. “I think it’s windy enough. I can get it to fly,” he answered, as he hurried out through the back door. I peeked through the curtains to watch determination in action. Up and down the yard he ran, pulling the kite attached to a small length of string. The plastic kite, proudly displaying a picture of Batman, remained about shoulder level. He ran back and forth, as hard as his ten-year-old legs would carry him, looking back hopefully at the kite trailing behind. After about ten minutes of unsuccessful determination, he came back in.I asked, “How did it go?” “Fine,” he said, “I got it to fly some.” As he walked past me to return the kite to the closet shelf, I heard him say under his breath, “I guess I'll have to wait for the wind.”At that moment I heard another voice speak to my heart. “Alice, sometimes you are just like that. You want to do it your way instead of waiting for the wind.” And the voice was right. We usually want to use our own efforts to accomplish what we want to do. We wait for the windonly after we have done all we can and have exhausted our own strength. We must learn how to rely on Him in the first place!4.The writer didn’t fly t he kite with his nephew because she _____________.A.was not so experienced in flying kitesB.wanted to get relaxedC.preferred to stay in peace and quietD.thought the weather was not suitable5.Which word can best describe Tripper?A.naughty B.insistentC.sensitive D.clever6.What can we infer from Paragraph 5?A.Tripper became hopeless.B.Tripper was easy to give up.C.Tripper didn’t want to admit defeat.D.Tripper was disappointed with the kite flying.7.What is the best title for the passage?A.Try Your Best B.Wait for the WindC.Fly a Kite in Life D.Determine to SucceedChinese Culture Shown to the World with LoveLi Ziqi, a short video blogger specializing in traditional Chinese cooking and handicrafts, has gained worldwide popularity.Li has abou t 20 million followers on Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent to Twitter, plus 7 million followers on overseas social media networks. Many foreigners say they have got to know traditional Chinese food culture via her channel. It is the spirit of craftsmanship (技艺) behind her works that makes Li’s video clips attractive. The phone slides into it and gets locked through a magnetic (磁力的) device. It’s not unlocked again until the final bell rings. The procedure will repeat every day for the rest of the schoolyear.Adam Gelb, the vice-president, ran a pilot project last year with 20 students and decided to do a school-wide, bell to bell program for this school year. The Yondr pouch is a start-up in San Francisco with a mission to create phone-free spaces, something that is the very thought with Gelb.“I really think it’s about being present and engaging in the adult that’s trying to teach you, and your peers that might be in your small group. That’s part of the main philosophy that we're trying to spread,” he said.Brad Friedman, another teacher at the school, said he was becoming concerned with overuse of phones at school. He said he often saw students completely lost on their phones, some not socializing at all with other students. This week, he’s already seeing the difference. “Everyone else was socializing and eating lunch together. That’s what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage is at its worst,” he said.A senior at San Mateo High School Djelani Phillips-Diop said he definitely panicked at first when he heard he had to lock his phone. “I panicked, I guess. Last year when we had phones, I was using it every day,” he said.In case of emergency, every classroom has the unlocking device. Teachers still have access to their own cellphones and des k phones. “We’ve gotten all 1,700 students unlocked with a matter of minutes,” said Gelb.We spoke to four students who, despite their initial panic, agreed that a phone-free school experience has its benefits.12.What can we learn about the Yondr pouch from paragraph 1?A.It is a device to lock phones. AUNESCO’s World Heritage List has been updated for 2024, and Europe’s newest listings, some of Europe’s lesser-known yet culturally significant sites, are well worth exploring.Via Appia, ItalyAlso known as “the Queen of roads”, this 500-mile stretch is the oldest Roman road. It connects the Italian capital to Southern Italy’s seaports and speeds the growth and development of new settlements while driving agricultural production and trade. Journeying up this road is a transportation through time, with the original paving stones reminding us of Italy’s old times.Schwerin Residence Ensemble (建筑群), GermanyA picture-perfect image of traditional German architecture surrounded by Lake Schwerin, this cultural ensemble comprises 38 of Schwerin’s most striking landscapes and architecture. The architecture of Schwerin captures the essence of 19th-century Germany with its public gardens and cultural buildings tied together by the grand Schwerin Castle. The Flow Country, ScotlandIn Scotland lies one of the world’s most untouched blanket bog (沼泽) landscapes. With around 500,000 acres of bog pools and ancient plants, The Flow Country is one of the world’s biggest carbon stores, crucial in the fight against climate change. On foot is how you can experience the dramatic views of this lesser-known landscape and diverse wildlife species closely.Moravian Church Settlements, Germany and UKGracehill was a village in Northern Ireland founded by the Moravians in 1759. Guided tours of Gracehill Old School and the Moravian Church offer visual insights into traditional, Moravian architecture. In Germany, the living Moravian heritage can be felt in the museums and church halls of Herrnhut, the birthplace of the Moravian Church.1. What can one expect to do from the travel along Via Appia?A. Take a bus to southern seaports.B. Admire some German buildings.C. Experience the ancient past of Italy.D. Have a look at Moravian architecture.2. Which site can one go to watch the wildlife?A. Via Appia.B. The Flow Country.C. Schwerin Residence Ensemble.D. Moravian Church Settlements.3. What do the four sites have in common?A. They are located in the same country.B. They are not much known to the outside.C. They are meant for nature-loving travelers.D. They have long been on the World Heritage List.BHearing the speeding cars passing us, I had to focus on the sound of my uncle’s bicycle leading the way. At thirty, with my retinas (视网膜) dying from an eye disease, driving a car was impossible and I couldn’t give up the freedom of riding my bike.Uncle Fred pedalled steadily. I biked a few inches behind. He shouted directions at each intersection. Suddenly, his voice rose with urgency, “Carol, stop! A car is turning.”When we reached our destination, my shoulders ached from the ride. As I sat next to Uncle Fred, he cleared his throat and said, “Carol, did you think about getting a trained Seeing Eye dog? It can give you independence.” He knew I was afraid of dogs. Words stuck in my throat. But his voice cracked and planted the seed of an idea. My world shrunk as my blindness grew worse. Luckily, I had a good sense of direction, allowing me to visualize neighborhood routes. This skill could be an advantage when working with a dog. After calculating, I finally called the guide dog school. The admission application arrived, but I still wasn’t sure. One day, I phoned my friend Robert, a longtime guide dog user in my town. He shared his positive experiences. Somehow, his words convinced me to give it a try.During the training, the dog trainer’s coaching and each successful walk with the dogs built my confidence. As my guide dog Misty and I bonded, my shoulders relaxed. When I returned home, Uncle Fred was the first to meet Misty. Misty sat at our feet waving her tail. She must have picked up on the positive energy that circled us like a hug. Misty drove away my anxiety as I slowly opened my heart to her. Just as Uncle Fred had predicted, overcoming my fear gave me the opportunity for more independence. My new confidence came from using a guide dog, allowing me to walk tall. Uncle Fred’s advice moved my sense of joy from my bike to my dog.4. What drove the author to ride a bike?A. Getting prepared for driving a car.B. Treating her disease by taking exercise.C. Getting familiar with noisy background.D. Enjoying the freedom of moving around.5. How did the author react to her uncle’s suggestion?A. She thought it worth a try.B. She drew up a practical plan.C. She was stuck in desperation.D. She refused it for fear of dogs.6. Why did the author call Robert?A. To invite him to adopt a dog.B. To ask him about the application.C. To encourage him to be positive in life.D. To consult him about taking a guide dog.7. What change did Misty bring to the author?A. She became confident about fighting the illness.B. She became more attached to her uncle for help.C. She gained her independence with Misty’s help.D. She formed her community of guide dog trainers.CIn surveys over the past couple of years, Gallup researchers have found only about a third of U. S. workers feel engaged with their jobs. It’s a concern for companies and the economy. Fortunately, researchers have identified a simple solution: Recognize your employees’ achievements.Across a number of industries, employees having high-quality recognition on the job were 45% less likely to have left that job between 2022 and 2024. “Imagine how demoralizing it would be if you’re doing things at work that nobody sees and you feel like nobody cares about,’’ says Martin, senior director at Workhuman, which tracked the career paths of more than 3,400 workers over two years. When it comes to recognition, people feel less lonely when their contributions are praised, which in turn keeps them from seeking work elsewhere. The survey asked respondents if they felt stressed the previous day. Those who said they felt recognized on the job reported lower levels of stress than those who said they were not.Another finding emerging from the surveys is that high-quality feedback can fuel professional development. That was Andy Hernandez’s experience. He was working in car financing in Greenville, trying to figure out how to get ahead, when he decided to learn Excel to use it at work. He began pitching ideas using his newly acquired skills. Managers liked what he was doing and told him as much. “It motivates me to know that all this extra stuff I’m doing gets recognized; it’s also helping me show that I, m ready for the next step,” he says. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a team leader. He says he looked for opportunities to show appreciation for his team. There are generational differences when it comes to the desire for feedback, Gallup found in 2024. Younger workers, who feel less attached to their workplaces than their parents, have a higher expectation of appreciation. Fortunately for them, company leaders are also increasingly recognizing the importance of praise in the workplace. In 2024, Workhuman found 42% of senior leaders reporting their organizations value employee recognition, up from 28% in 2022.8. What did Gallup researchers reveal about U. S. workers?A. They give positive work feedback.B. They desire high income for their work.C. They feel less devoted to their work.D. They’re concerned about U. S. economy.9. What does the underlined word “demoralizing” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Discouraging.B. Inspiring.C. Misleading.D. Entertaining.10. What benefit did learning Excel bring to Andy?A. It made him judge his team in a positive way.B. He welcomed each suggestion objectively.C. It enabled him to be put in charge of a firm.D. He was recognized and motivated to go on.11. What did Gallup find about generational differences?A. Young leaders are less likely to praise their workers.B. Young workers have high expectations to be recognized.C. Senior leaders care little about workplace recognition.D. Senior workers enjoy a rise in recognition of their work.DA revolution in weather forecasting could soon see warnings of coming heatwaves, storms or other extreme events accompanied by specific information on the role climate change has played in fuelling them. The shift would help bring the reality of our warming planet to the general public.Key to this idea is the growing field of attribution science (归因科学), which involves examining extreme weather events after the fact to detail the impact of climate change. It involves simulating an event twice, under real-world conditions and in a fictional world with no human-caused climate change. The difference between those two situations reveals the extent to which rising emissions (排放) made matters worse. Now, researchers want to go further and apply attribution science to events before they even happen. At the UK weather service, the Met Office, Peter Stott and his colleagues are doing this with weather forecasting models, comparing real-world forecasts with ones based on a fictional world unaffected by human influence. The goal is to provide the public with weather and climate information at the same time. “So, the forecast shows how the weather information relates to climate change, and the impacts it will mean for them locally.”Bernat at the Institute of GeoSciences in Spain has experimented with a different approach, using artificial intelligence-powered weather forecasts. Together with colleagues, he ran the AI-enabled approach on three past extreme events: the 2018 Iberian heatwave, Hurricane Florence in the US in 2018, and Storm Ciaran in the UK and other parts of northern Europe in 2023. The AI models correctly predicted that all three extreme events would occur, but underestimated their size. Bemat says the AI approach is currently most accurate when considering heatwaves but more limited for complex systems such as a tropical storm. But Bernat says AI weather forecasts are rapidly improving. He says this AI-based approach would allow attribution analysis to be much more widely used, helping to expand people’s understanding of how extreme events are changing.12. What will be added to weather forecasting after the revolution?A. The damage extreme weather events cause to the environment.B. Effective measures in preventing extreme weather events.C. The effect of climate change on extreme weather events.D. Specific ways for the public to fight against climate change.13. What’s the purpose of the work of Peter’s team?A. To build a model to produce climate information.B. To connect local weather with climate change.C. To predict the degree of local carbon emissions.D. To apply AI to the prediction of extreme events.14. What is Bernat’s attitude toward AI weather forecasts?A. Unclear.B. Dismissive.C. Doubtful.D. Approving.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. Climate Information Is Added to Weather ForecastsB. AI Technology Will Be Used in Predicting Weather EventsC. Emissions Are Predicted to Fuel Extreme Weather EventsD. Weather Forecasts Enjoy a Breakthrough Fuelled by AI第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

This time of year is not only about celebrating success, but saying thanks to all of those who helped make these episodes possible. When something looks easy, it usually means there are a bunch of talented people behind the scenes making it happen.Although our shows feature me and my photography, the episodes were produced by my company. Every shoot had at least one camera operator and an all-round field operation person. Otherwise, I'd have been bumbled(笨手笨脚)around, trying to film myself while also taking photos. Dante Fernandes has been in the field with me for six years, putting up with every possible weather situation and countless seasickness situations than you can imagine.Depending on the shoot, we were also supported by a lot of other people, such as drone(无人机)pilot, Daina Buchner, who flew drones to capture beautiful shots for the Shark Week episode, and the people who were on camera with me, like Mermaid Linden. I was so lucky to have so many biologists, field guides, camera operators and sound operators. The entire team at Discovery helped me a lot, especially our executive producer Christina Bavetta, who watched every single rough shot and helped us be even better at what we did with her incredible insights and production notes. So as you watch the show this year, don't just enjoy the beauty and humor of these adventures, but also give a thought to all the people behind the scenes who made it happen. 4.What is the author?A.A host.B.A guide.C.A biologist.D.A photographer.5.Why did the author write the text?A.To attract more audiences.B.To recall the process of work.C.To thank the people involved.D.To show how to make the episodes.6.Which of the following can best describe the author's work?A.Relaxing.B.Challenging.C.Well-paid.D.Regular. 7.How did Christina Bavetta help the author?A.By offering some useful advice.B.By teaching how to write notes.C.By flying drones to take pictures.D.By telling stories on camera.Despite Ecoador’s tough protection, there have been many giant tortoises(陆龟)killed recently, probably for their meat for financial gains made by wildlife hunters. For a century, Ecuador’s beautiful and endangered giant tortoises have been protected. Hunting the tortoise is illegal under Ecuador’s laws. These species, living on the Galápagos Islands, are one of the largest living reptiles(爬行动物) with the longest life span of all vertebrates. The oldest tortoise on record was 175 years old.“This isn’t a solitary incident,” the Galápagos Conservancy, a US-based conservation organization said. “In September 2021, the remains of 15 other endangered giant tortoises were found on Isabela. The reptiles had likely been hunted for consumption.”The islands are located around 600 miles off the shore of Ecuador’s coast, in the Pacific Ocean. The archipelago(群岛) is considered one of the world’s best places to see wildlife, and it is home to animal and plant species that are found nowhere else in the world.Their famously fearless wildlife is believed to have been a source of inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution, following his visit to the islands in 1835. The islands were actually discovered by accident in 1535 when a Spanish ship was blown off course while sailing from Panama to Peru. Ironically enough, the ship’s captain was unimpressed by the islands, writing to the king that they were “worthless”. That view, of course, changed over time. Now about 25,000 people live in the four inhabited islands of Santa Cruz, Isabela. San Cristóbal, and Floreana. There were once at least 250,000 giant tortoises on the islands; there are fewer than 15,000 in the wild today—and two subspecies are already extinct. “Evidence from the 2021investigation showed that the reptiles bad likely been hunted for consumption,” Galápagos Conservancy continued. “Many are worried the population will continue to decrease if serious action isn’t taken soon. We must safeguard giant tortoises and the ecosystems they depend on.”8.What made Ecuador’s giant tortoises endangered according to the text?A.Illegal hunting.B.Natural disasters.C.Environmental pollution.D.The decrease in shelters.9.What does the underlined word “solitary” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Serious.B.Demanding.C.Single.D.Disturbing.10.What did the wildlife on the Galápagos Islands contribute to?A.Darwin’s theory of evolution.B.People living on the archipelago.C.The sailing from Panama to Peru.D.The discovery of the archipelago.11.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?A.The way to safeguard the tortoises.B.The further research on the tortoises.C.The long history of the tortoises.D.The urgency of protecting the tortoises.Raising livestock (牲畜) is a big part of the carbon emission from agriculture. But it is hard to change people’s habits and get them to give up their hamburgers, especially since more than one-third of Americans eat fast food every day. We previously called for carbon labels on everything from buildings to burgers. Now, a new study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that labels on fast food affected people's choices. The study said shifting current dietary patterns to more sustainable diets with less red meat could reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and have health benefits. The 5,000 participants in the study were shown fake menus. One group got menus with high climate impact labels on red meat items and another had low climate impact labels on fish or plant-based burgers. Both menus were effective in reducing the orders for red meat. But interestingly, the high-impact labels were far more effective, with 23% of the participants choosing a more environmentally sustainable selection, while menus listing low-impact choices encouraged only 10% participants to change.“We found that labeling red meat items with high-climate impact labels was more effective in increasing sustainable selections than labeling non-red meat items with low-climate impact labels,” wrote the authors of the study.Lead author, Julia Wolfson, said, “These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable food choices in a fast food setting.”The study points out negative labels might be unpopular: “It is unlikely that the industry would voluntarily adopt a negative label approach; such an approach needs to be carried out via law. However, high climate impact labels may easily be adopted in settings like universities and hospitals.”They have a point that this label is aggressively negative, more like a cigarette warning than a food label. In the study, the authors note that future research should test more label designs using qualitative and quantitative research on how people understand different climate impact labels.12.What is paragraph 1 mainly about?A.The impact of carbon emission.B.The background of the new study.C.The request of giving up carbon labels.D.The difficulty in changing people's habits.13.How did the groups respond to the menus?A.They liked them very much.B.They stuck to their preferences.C.Some of them stopped eating fast food.D.Some of them changed their food choices.14.What can we learn about carrying out the approach from the text?A.It will be banned by law.B.It will face some resistance.C.It will produce bad results.D.It will be accepted by all industries.15.What may be the best title for the text?A.Raising livestock causes carbon emissionB.Fast food has a negative effect on climateC.Researchers are focusing on climate impactD.Labels on fast food help protect the environment二、七选五When the sun goes down in the evening and you are sitting outside at home, you mayone you can enjoy by the light of the moon.17The plants with silver or multi-colored leaves, white or light-colored flowers, or flowers that open only at night are good choices for a moon garden. Another way to enjoy plants in the evening is to choose ones with a pleasing smell. Plant them along a walkway or near a seating area outdoors, where you can enjoy them up close, or within view of a window. Select plants depending on season or temperatureYou can begin the garden early with early bloomers, like lily of the valley. Make the season last longer into the autumn with late bloomers like chrysanthemum. In very warm places, try planting frangipani to fill your evenings with pleasure. 18 .Group your plants togetherFor the best visual effect, plant in groups of three, five or seven of the same kind of plant. That is a good gardening method in general because it avoids creating a disorganized mixture of plants and flowers. But it is more important in a moon garden. 19 .Add some small lightsThere is one more thing to increase how much you can see your moon garden—add some small lights that face the plants. 20 . Think about using other light-colored design elements as well, such as fencing, plant supports, stones, water features and glass balls.A.Insects that visit flowers at night love themB.Plant some plants that show well in moonlightC.They will increase the appeal of your moon gardenD.However, with some planning, you can have a moon gardenE.You certainly don’t want your single plants to get lost in the darkF.Find the plants that work best in your climate by talking with a local expertG.These plants can be seen after sunset and especially shine under a full moon三、完形填空One day before the last Christmas, my wife, Charlotte, was busy decorating our25.A.highlights B.platforms C.exposures D.standards 26.A.fall behind B.stand out C.give up D.check in 27.A.healthy B.useful C.attractive D.fundamental 28.A.cheerful B.strange C.common D.remaining 29.A.competed B.corresponded C.reunited D.equipped 30.A.televisions B.computers C.printers D.lights 31.A.shining B.flying C.growing D.working 32.A.proud B.fortunate C.wrong D.different 33.A.quickly B.beautifully C.frequently D.randomly 34.A.true B.prepared C.alone D.alive 35.A.hiding B.disappearing C.shaking D.wondering四、用单词的适当形式完成短文阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Knights, scholars and the highwayman (拦路强盗)or thieves, who had been infamous for their clever robberies, passed by each other. Here, also, were noblemen dressed in gold, from Italy and Spain and France; slaves from Spanish America, sea captains and ministers, soldiers and servants—all held by chances or interests within the gray walls which circled London, and whose gates gave welcome to as strange a crowd as could be found in the world.Into this curious crowd came Shakespeare, quick to see and eager to learn. And before long all these strange sights were as familiar to him as the faces of his own town’s residents. Each one told its story to him so plainly that, as before he had learned the secrets of the fields and woods, so now he learned men and men’s interests that make up the great world. And he learned these lessons so well that when he came to write his plays, he made such use of them as no writer ever made before or since; for it is the use of this knowledge of the world, combined with his own genius, that makes Shakespeare the greatest dramatist that has ever lived.24. What was London like in Shakespeare’s eyes when he first went there?A. Dirty and small.B. Strange and interesting.C. Infamous and terrible.D. Familiar and modern.25. Which of the following best describes Shakespeare?A. Shakespeare got inspiration to write from his hometown, London.B. Shakespeare was eager to make friends with the noblemen in London.C. Crowd.B. Resident.C. Face.D. Sight.27. The passage probably comes from______.A. a posterB. a textbookC. an advertisementD. an announcementCStanding desks have become common across Silicon Valley, offering health benefits to those willing to work on their feet. However, due to their high price, they have failed to catch on until now. Recently, Ikea has brought out Bekant convertible(可变换的)standing desk that can become a normal desk at the touch of a button. The $500 adjustable desk can transform from a standard desk to a standing one, and Ikea hopes it could make the standing desk mainstream.Experts say that changing from a seated to a standing desk can improve productivity. Similar desks have become a common sight at tech firms such as Google, where some employees have even installed treadmill (跑步机) and bicycle desks. The desk is not the first “convertible” on the market. As early as 2013, Stir Kinect brought out an adjustable desk. The $3,890 Stir Kinect desk has a motor to raise and lower itself, changing it into a standing desk or a traditional desk. The desk can even be programmed to move up and down slightly, making it appear to take a gentle breath to remind the user to change their positions. To move between sitting and standing positions, owners simply double tap on the screen. The desk can learn the user’s preferences over time and suggest the best seating position. The Stir Kinect desk was created by a team of ex-Apple and Disney engineers. It hasa built-in touch screen to control and track movement, and can tell users exactly how many calories they burn by standing during their working day. It also has devices containing power points and USB ports for charging phones, to keep cables hidden.“ Ikea’s height-adjustable desk is great for opening up the lower end of the market, ’’ said JP Labrosse, founder and CEO of Stir.28. What is the text mainly about?A. Ikea has brought out an adjustable standing desk.B. Silicon Valley offered health benefits to officials.C. Google formed their tech firms to design bicycle desks.D. The Stir Kinect desk will become mainstream in the market.29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. Before Bekant desk, similar adjustable desks have been widely used.B. The seated desks will take the place of the standing desks in the future.C. Compared to the Stir Kinect desk, the Bekant desk is much cheaper.D. The adjustable desks were designed by the Apple and Disney Company.30. The Stir Kinect desk______.A. can breathe in and breathe out by pressing the button onceB. can charge phones by using a device containing power pointC. can tell you how many calories you need for a walkD. can advise you to do more exercise at a proper time31. What can we infer from the last sentence given by JP Labrosse?A. Ikea’s adjustable desk will be popular with average people.B. Ikea will have to sell furniture at a lower price in the future.C. This height adjustable table can only be found in Ikea.D. It is not necessary for Ikea to open up the market at all.DAirbags, now found in almost every vehicle, have saved countless lives and largely reduced the severity of injuries in crashes. Similar technology could greatly reduce broken hips (髋部) resulting from a fall, something most seniors fear.Dr. Robert Buckman and his start-up company, Active Protective in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has developed a promising solution, a wearable airbag that can protect hip bones in the event of a fall. The idea was the result of Dr. Buckman’s years as a doctor at Temple University. He noticed how many elderly people were being brought into hospitals with broken hip due to falls, and how they often never completely recovered from the injuries. He started to ask what he could do for these people, and that was when he started trying to figure out whether there was a way of helping people who were at the highest risk of falling and suffering these kinds of injuries. The device is worn much like a regular belt, but on the outside of the clothing, and it includes sensors that monitor the movement of hips. If the device detects that the person, is falling, an airbag opens before the person hits the ground, cushioning the fall. When the wearer hits the ground, the bag reduces the force to the hip bones by 90 percent, enough to avoid the majority of hip injuries. With one out of every three people aged 65 and older suffering serious falls each year, Active Protective has a big market for its wearable device. It also has the potential to sizably reduce hip - related health care expenses: Hip injuries among the elderly cost the US health care system in 2012 $30 billion, which doesn’t include the long-term care expenses associated with the high percentage of patients that can no longer live independently.32. What is the purpose of the Active Protective’s airbag?A. To avoid hip injuries among seniors.B. To protect seniors from car accidents.C. To help seniors with their daily nursing.D. To help doctors deal with serious injuries.33. What inspired Dr. Robert Buckman to make the device?A. A report on seniors’ health.B. A serious fall he experienced.C. His work experiences as a doctor.D. Suggestions of seniors at Temple University.34. How does the device mainly work?A. By predicting road conditions.B. By speeding up bone recovery.C. By reducing the effects of falling.D. By preventing people from failing.35. What does the author think of the Active Protective’s airbag?A. It still needs improving.B. It has a promising future.C. It may encourage seniors to do exercise.D. It may increase America’s spend on seniors.第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Meanwhile, English is regarded as most significant by 18% of the participants, and the other subjects attract the attention of 21% of the students.Undoubtedly, the results reflect the position of each subject in Gaokao. As one of the fundamental subjects, math always comes first in all subjects. Besides, some students hold the view that math is most interesting and challenging, and it seems easier for us to have a senseexists of achievement in it. By contrast, some students, especially boys, find it hard to obtain immediate results when doing Chinese and English homework. However, each subject has its unique charm and they are of the same value. Therefore, I think we should take every subject seriously and improve our studies in a balanced way.〔152〕【评分HY】【书面表达评分HY】总体原那么:此题总分为25分,按5个档次给分。
