Unit 10
Teaching Objectives:
1. To remember and use new words and expressions;
2. To learn Why people say attitude is everything and how you can be happy;
3. To learn What the advantages are in learning to be funny in the workplace;
4. To know about idioms, proverbs and allusion in business English passages;
5. To deal with the language points in Text A and Text B.
Focuses:
1. To learn Why people say attitude is everything and how you can be happy;
2. To learn What the advantages are in learning to be funny in the workplace.
Difficulties:
How to deal with the idioms, proverbs and allusion when reading business English passages.
Teaching Time:2 periods.
Teaching Procedures:
Part I Pre-reading Questions
It can be used as lead-in questions. For students, they can discuss with each other and will have free answers. Part II Extensive Reading
In this part, there are two texts and their relevant exercises. By reading the texts in limited time, Teacher helps students understand the contents and the reading methods to build reading abilities gradually.
Text A Be Happy Cause I Choose Happiness
a. Let the students read Text A to finish Exercise I by using the basic reading skills learned before;
b. Ask students to Check the answers to Exercises I and to understand the text at the same time;
d. Check the answers to Exercises I;
e. Analyze the language points in the text:
1. Jerry is the kind of guy you love to hate.
love to hate:又爱又恨,深爱。如:
Struggle with this town because you love to hate it but to let it go.
与这个城市争斗,因为你对它又爱又恨,却不愿放弃。
2. We lose touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
我们失去了联系,但是当我对生活做出选择而不是机械反应的时候,我常常想起他。
3. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination.
当他试图打开保险箱时,他的手紧张得发抖,把号码锁的号码组合也掉了。
f. Assign Exercises II and III as their homework.
Text B Humour Me
a. Several minutes for students to use some basic reading skills to read the text only once, then ask them to do Exercises I & II;
b. Check the answers to Exercises I & II;
c. Point out some language points:
1. Breaking into your office’s testosterone-fuelled comedy clique can be tough—and even more so if
you’re a woman.
要加入你办公室里以男性为特征的搞笑团体是困难的,如果你是女人就更困难。
testosterone-fuelled:原意是“受睾丸激素刺激的”,这里比喻以男性为特征的。
2. stand-up comic: 以说笑话为主的喜剧演员。
3. “In the workplace men and women can feel put-on by the cynical and sarcastic humour of a male boss
and not know how to react,” he says.
他说:“在工作场所,不论男女,在面对老板的玩世不恭和极具讽刺的幽默时,都会感到很难堪,不知道如何应对。”
4. If you tell a boss you don’t like that what he’s doing, it’s confrontational, whereas to do it with humour,
the biter is being bitten back.
如果你对你的上司说你不喜欢他所做的事,那就产生了对抗,然而用幽默的方式去说,你就能够以牙还牙。
d. Assign Exercises III and IV as their homework.
Part III Reading Skills
Before dealing with Text A and Text B, ask students to read through the whole passage of reading skill, to lead them to understand the details about idioms, proverbs and allusion while reading business English passages, especially asking them to pay special attention to the examples.
Part IV Supplementary Reading: Come Out and Play
Ask students to read it in a limited time after class, and then write a summary.
Part V Test Yourself
Ask students to do it and check the answers by themselves.
Questions for Discussion and Reflection:
1. What’s your attitude towards choice?
2. Do you think women are less humorous than men? Why or why not?
Assignments
1. Write a short summary of about 50 words to express the main idea of Supplementary Reading;
2. Finish all exercises in this unit.
