Here we are at Baoguang Temple. I feel you can hardly wait to enter the temple. Before we get in, you may try your luck first. Don’t you see the wall screen with a giant Chinese character over there? The giant character is the Chinese word Fu(福), literally means happiness or fortune. Now, please stand in a line and face the wall screen. Close your eyes please! It is a peculiar pagoda and also called sarira pagoda, where the Buddhist scriptures and sariras are stored. Look ahead! That’s it. Let’s take a walk around the pagoda first. The pagoda has 13 stories, about 30 meters high. It is a 4-sided pagoda, reflecting the pattern of one floor symbolizing on sarira. On each side of each storey is inlaid with three Buddhist statues. They are made of bronze, stone or jade. The statue of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, sits on the base.Would you please look it more carefully? On the eaves of every floor hang four bronze wind-bells. The rose finches took the bells in their mouth. The top of the pagoda was made of bronze and plated with gold. It is always shining in the sunlight just like today! The Buddhist disciples believe the pagoda will occasionally emit precious light and wild cranes will be attracted to worship Buddha.Well, please watch the pagoda more carefully one more time! Y ou may see it is slightly leaning to the west. This pagoda may remind you of something? Aha…the inclined tower in Italy! Try to make your introduction more situational and attractive by using the proper body language. Pay attention to the fluency and coherence of your class presentation.Part IV TOURISM AND TRAVELTourism ResourcesThe primary feature of tourism resources is that it is regional, since various kinds of natural and human scenic destinations in the world have been formed on the basis of regional divergences. Because of the “3S’s”(sun, sea and sand), the most attractive scenic destinations in world-wide travel activities are distributed along coastal areas in low and medium latitude areas. The customs of different nationalities generally appear unique and intriguing in comparatively under-developed regions. It is because of the divergent distribution of tourism resources that various natural scenic destinations and distinctive human cultures attract many tourists. The extent of the range of tourism resources is determined by the complexity of the objective world. The definition of tourism resources indicates that the natural and human factors which attract tourists are also potential tourism resources. The list of tourism resources is very extensive including a number of natural resources, s uch assunrise, sunset, Buddhist halo and cloud sea; rivers, lakes, mountains, deserts, and grasslands on the surface of the earth; underground caves and rivers; and human tourism resources such as cities, towns temples and customs, to name a few. With its spacious territory and spectacular natural beauty, China has eight distinct world famous natural tourism resources: famous mountains, rivers, lakes, seas, waterfalls, springs, caves and ecological preserves. China is also one of the countries with a great ancient civilization rich in human tourism resources. There are great number of historical relics such as the Imperial Palace Museum in Beijing, the Terra-Cotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty in Xi’an, the private gardens in Suzhou, just to mention a few. It is the unique temple where Buddha and empress are worshiped together in China. Here you can see the Buddhist sculptures ranging from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties. And you can appreciate the modern Slogan Stele Forest of the Red Army, too.The Temple was built during the Kaiyuan period in the Tang Dynasty. After Wu Zetian, the only female monarch in China, took the power, she issued a decree that the former Wunu Temple be reconstructed. The temple was renamed Huangze Temple. The name of the temple has special implications, indicating that the Empress’s blessings spread far and can bless people all over China. In the temple, Zetian’s stone statue is enshrined. She wears a coronet with an inlaid statue of Buddha and dress colorful overcoat with long tassels, exposing her upper chest and arms, just like the Maitreya Buddha.Cliff carvings in Huangze Temple are among the first group of major cultural relics brought under state protection in 1960’s. There are 54 niches and 1,203 Buddhist statues. The Central Column Cave has about 13 cubic meters, with a stone column in its center. It is actually a beautiful scripture tower. Three sides of the column are carved with Buddha images, and in the center is enshrined the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. It is a rare piece of early cave art. There are also numerous steles.14 significant steles are highly recommended, for the “ Twelve Pictures of Silkworm and Mulberry” are carved on these steles.Make up a situational dialogue between the desk mates according to the passage. What can we see in the Central Column Cave? Why was Slogan Stele Forest of the Red Army found in Huangze Temple?Part BIn my opinion, Empress Wu Zetian regarded herself as the goddess.I’d like to say Wu Zetian worshiped Maitreya Buddha. No wonder you ask such a question, because you don’t know what Huangze means in Chinese.Don’t you see some Buddhist scriptures in the stone column?Obviously, the Red Army used to fight against the enemies here.READINGWORDS AND PROPER NAMESCalligrapher n. 书法家Passageway n. 过道,出入口Memorial Temple of the Three Sus 三苏祠Su Xun 苏洵Su Shi 苏轼Su Zhe 苏辙Qixian Hall (Hall of Sages) 启贤堂Mujiashan Hall 木假山堂The Memorial Temple of the Three SusThe Memorial Temple of the Three Sus is formerly the residence of the three celebrated scholars of the Su Family in the Song Dynasty: Su Xun and his two sons Su Shi (the elder) and Su Zhe (the younger). If the recreational program is arranged in the itinerary, the tour guide should go with the tour group on time, introduce the facilities of the theatre and let them know about the duration of the program, seating arrangement, the time and place for gathering when the performance is finished. The tour guide should be quite familiar with the content and features of the local performances so as to give a brief introduction of the performances before the tourists appreciate them. In the large entertainment venues, the tour guide should co-operate with the tour escort, pay attention to the movements of the tourists and remind the tourists not to go dispersedly.
If the recreational program is beyond the itinerary, the tour guide should help them with the tickets and the way to get there, remind them of the matters need attention and taking the brochure of the hotel in case they can’t find the way back.
