They had a dozen children, six boys and six girls, in seventeen years. One reason Dad had so many children was that he was confident anything he and Mother teamed upon was sure to be a success.
Our house at Montclair, New Jersey, was a sort of school for scientific management and the removal of wasted motions —or “motion study,” as Dad and Mother named it.
Dad took moving pictures of us children washing dishes, so that he could determine how we could reduce our motions and thus hurry through the task. Each child who wanted extra pocket money put forward an offer saying what he would do the job for. The lowest bidder got the contract(合约).
Dad put process and work charts in the bathrooms. Every child old enough to write — and Dad expected his children to start writing at a young age — was required to sign their names on the charts in the morning after he had brushed his teeth, taken a bath, combed his hair, and made his bed. At night, each child had to weigh himself, mark the figure on a graph, and sign the process charts again after he had done his homework, washed his hands and face, and brushed his teeth. Mother wanted to have a place on the charts for saying prayers, but Dad said as far as he was concerned prayers were voluntary.
It was strict management, all right. Yes, at home or on the job, Dad was always the efficiency expert. He buttoned his vest from the bottom up, instead of from the top down, because the bottom-to-top process took him only three seconds, while the top-to-bottom took seven. He even used two shaving brushes to make his face smooth enough, because he found that by so doing he could cut seventeen seconds off his shaving time. For a while he tried shaving with two razors, but he finally gave that up.
“I can save forty-four seconds,” he complained, “but I wasted two minutes this morning putting this bandage on my throat.” It wasn't the injured throat that really bothered him. It was the two minutes.
(1)Why was the author's house considered a sort of school?
A. It had a team of twelve children there.
B. The children were taught how to work well in it.
C. The parents could teach their children better at home.
D. The parents could have the children's daily activities recorded.
(2)What is the purpose of signing the charts?
A. To help to do things efficiently.
B. To manage the big family effectively.
C. To look after the children better.

(3)What did the father complain about one morning?
A. He should have given up shaving.
B. His bleeding throat bothered him.
C. He couldn't shave with two razors.
D. He failed to cut short his shaving time.
(4)We can we infer from the text?
A. The kids had to bid for everything they wanted.

D. The father's work was to teach the children at home.

The Women's Institute is urging supermarkets to do more to help consumers reduce their home food waste, after a survey of its own membership showed widespread confusion about “best before” and “use by” labeling(标签) on packaging.
Its new analysis of products on supermarket shelves found that “once-opened” instructions were often contradictory and often failed to make clear whether they were a guide to food safety or quality. Only 45% of 5,000 WI members surveyed understood that best-before dates were a sign of food quality, while 26% did not understand that the more important use-by dates were a decisive guide to food safety.
In its report on food waste, the WI said supermarkets were “potent ially contributing to home food waste by leading customers to buy more food than they need, and giving conflicting and confusing on-pack information that leaves customers unsure about how long a product remains safe to eat in the home setting”. The 42-page report is part of the WI's ongoing campaign to reduce food waste. To underline the point about conflicting information, it cites(引用) a can of Sainsbury's own-brand sweetcorn advising consumers to eat it within one day of opening, while a similar tin from Waitrose gave consumers two days to finish it. Green Giant sweetcorn, however, has no specified date for eating once opened.
Marylyn Haines Evans, chair of the Women's Institute's public affairs said: “WI members are some of the more informed members of society about food and cookery, but they are still confused about food labelling and 'once-opened' information. So we would like supermarkets to extend the amount of time that consumers have to use a product in their homes by making all of their once-opened instructions on product packaging consistent, and completely remove once-opened instructions on products where food safety is not an issue.”
(1)What mainly leads to food waste according to WI?
A. Poor quality of food.
B. Attractive packaging of products.
C. Competition among supermarkets.
D. Consumers' confusion about on-pack information.(2)Which of the following can inform you of food safety?
A. B.
C. D.
(3)Why are the three supermarkets mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To attract more consumers.
B. To compare their products.
C. To comment on their service.
D. To make WI's report convincing.
(4)What does Evans suggest supermarkets do about reducing food waste?
A. Extend life of a product.
B. Turn to well-informed WI members.
C. Give consistent once-opened instructions.
D. Remove instructions on product packaging.
【答案】(1)D
(2)C
(3)D
(4)C

Anxiety has now surpassed depression as the most common mental health disease among college students, though depression, too, is on the rise. More than half of students visiting campus clinics cite anxiety as a health concern, according to a recent study of more than 100,000 students nationwide by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State. Nearly one in six college students has been diagnosed with or treated for anxiety within the last 12 months, according to the annual national survey by the American College Health Association.
The causes range widely, experts say, from mounting academic pressure at earlier ages to overprotective parents to engagement with social media. Anxiety has always played a role in the development of a student's life, but now more students experience anxiety so acute that they are seeking professional help. Like many college clinics, the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of Central Florida (UCF)—one of the country's largest and fastest-growing universities, has seen sharp increases in the number of clients: 15.2 percent over last year alone.
Anxiety has become characteristic of the current generation of college students, said Dan Jones, the director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.
C. Because of increasingly pressures during high school, he and other experts say, students arrive at college preloaded with stress. Accustomed to extreme parental oversight, many seem unable to govern themselves. And with parents so accessible, students have had less incentive to develop life skills. “They can't tolerate discomfort or having to struggle,” Dr Jones said.
More often, anxiety is mild and temporary, the indication of a student under the control of a normal developmental issue-learning time management, for example, or how to handle rejection from a sorority. Mild anxiety is often treatable with early, modest interventions. But to care for rising numbers of severely troubled students, many counseling centers have moved to triage protocols That means that students with less urgent needs may wait several weeks for first appointments.
Like many college counseling centers, UCF has designed a variety of daily workshops and therapy groups that implicitly and explicitly address anxiety, depression and their triggers. Next fall the center will test a new app for treating anxiety with a seven-module cognitive behavioral program, accessible through a student's phone and augmented with brief videoconferences with a therapist. It also offers semester-long, 90-minute weekly therapy groups, such as “Keeping Calm and in Control”, “Mindfulness for Depression” and “Building Social Confidence” -for students struggling with social anxiety.
(1)Which of the following contributes to anxiety according to the text?
A. Protection from teachers.
B. An app in students' phones.
C. Increasingly learning pressure.
D. Management of time learning.
(2)What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Prevention.
B. Motivation.
C. Acquisition.
D. Direction.(3)What's the purpose of those therapy groups mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To help students suffering anxiety.
B. To test what social anxiety is.
C. To introduce the cognitive behavioral program of UCF.
D. To emphasize the importance of calm and confidence.
(4)Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Tips on dealing with anxiety
B. Causes of anxiety and depression
C. Different mental diseases threaten college students
D. College mental health centers overburdened with anxious students
【答案】(1)C
(2)B
(3)A
(4)D

Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has shortened their lifetime greatly.
The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing (管道装置) lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17°C cooler than the outside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside.
The village is the brainchild (主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process.
The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your “footprints”.
(1)What does Paragraph 1 intend to tell us?
A. The reason for buying fewer drinks.
B. The difficult situation of wildlife.
C. The amount of plastic waste.
D. The seriousness of plastic pollution.
(2)What is the biggest benefit to people living in the Plastic Bottle Village?
A. The house will be much cooler than normal ones.
B. The material of construction will be reduced a lot.
C. The newly-made house can save a lot of electricity.
D. The waste of the house can be consumed by fish and birds.
(3)Which of the following words can best describe Robert?
A. Creative.
B. Courageous.
C. Enthusiastic.
D. Sensitive.(4)The main purpose of Robert's projects is to
A. provide shelter for locals
B. reuse all deserted plastic bottles
C. popularize the use of plastic bottles
D. raise people's environmental awareness
【答案】(1)D
(2)A
(3)A
(4)D

根据最后一段的第一句“The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment.

Samanta Schweblin, one of the best young Spanish language novelists nominated (提名) by British literary magazine Granta, has visited Beijing to promote the first Chinese edition of a collection of her short stories. The collection, Birds in the Mouth, has been translated and published by Shanghai-based publisher Reader.
“Sometimes I hold the Chinese edition and choose a story at random and try to guess which one it is. But it is almost impossible for me; even the length is different.” says Schweblin. “When a book is translated into a Western language, I can at least understand some parts of my stories, and therefore suffer some doubt about the quality of the translation. But my Chinese edition is more like an act of faith.”
Born in Argentina in 1978, Schweblin says she is influenced by the literary traditions of the La Plata area, home to many famous Latin-American novelists.
Interested in writing stories of ordinary lives where suddenly something extraordinary happens,
something new, strange or unknown, she thinks, “The stranger and the unknown are not always related to ghosts or aliens, but can be something related to the known world, something that actually could happen.”
Birds in the Mouth tells of a divorced father who worries about his 13-year-old daughter and her mysterious appetites. It turns out that his daughter eats live birds.
The idea for this story ca me to Schweblin when she was browsing the Internet, “Click, click, click, a picture of a little girl who looks frightened with her hands covering her mouth came to my eyes. Little by little, I developed the story in my mind, and then wrote it down” recalls Schweblin. Although there are elements of violence and bloodiness in Schweblin's stories, she skillfully hides them, thinking the trick to writing a thrilling story is to stop the monster from appearing, while maintaining a frightening and mysterious atmosphere.

As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. "The woods" was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend's house and found him not at home, his mother might say, "Oh, he's out in the woods," with a tone (语气) of airy acceptance. It's similar to the tone people sometimes use now a days to tell me that someone I'm looking for is on the golf course or at the gym, or even "away from his desk". For us ten-year-olds, "being out in the woods" was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探索). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.
Often we got "lost" and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical; the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring.

根据第一段中的“For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.”

故选A。

根据第二段中的“Our explor ations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. ”可知,但是我们的探索与历
史上的相比不够系统,有些东西通常都是在沿途中偶然出现的,因此推断作者探索是无目
的的。

故选D。

(3)考查词义猜测。

根据第三段中的“the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees.”

根据第三段中的“There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortab le to sit in.”

根据第一段中的“ For us ten-year-olds, ‘being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.’”可知,作者和小伙伴们在“树林”里很快乐;
以及最后一段中的“We climbed a tree, and all of a sudde n it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.”

故选A。
