It offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits that contribute to an overall sense of well-being. In this essay, we will explore the importance of regular exercise and its positive impact on our lives.Firstly, regular exercise plays a vital role in improving our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as running, swimming, or cycling helps to strengthen our muscles and bones. It also enhances cardiovascular fitness, leading to a reduced risk of heart diseases and other chronic conditions. Furthermore, exercise promotes weight management and helps to prevent obesity, a growing problem in modern society. In addition to physical health, exercise greatly contributes to our mental well-being. Engaging in exercise releases endorphins, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormones, which elevate our mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Regular exercise can also alleviate symptoms of depression and improve overall cognitive function. It provides an opportunity for self-reflection and relaxation, acting as a positive outlet for coping with life's challenges.Furthermore, exercise offers a platform for social interaction, which is crucial for our overall well-being. Participating in group activities, such as team sports or fitness classes, allows us to connect with others who share similar interests. These social interactions foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Moreover, exercise can serve as a bonding activity among friends, family members, or colleagues, leading to stronger relationships and increased social support. To conclude, regular exercise is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life. It not only improves physical health and fitness but also enhances mental well-being and fosters social connections. Incorporating exercise into our daily routines should be a priority for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. So, let's make a commitment to prioritize our health and embrace regular exercise for a happier and healthier future.。

Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D).You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneIn the early 1600’s, a group known as the Separatists lived in England. They were people who wanted to worship God, study the Bible and pray, but the English laws did not allow then to worship as they desired. They were hunted down beaten, and locked up.Eventually, they heard about freedom of religion in Holland, and planned to escape. After much hardship, they were allowed to leave England. Now called Pilgrims, they lived in Holland for 12 years, but left because they couldn’t stand the hard life, and couldn’t work their own trades. They wanted to find a Kingdom of God for theirposterity(后代)to practice religion freely. So they hired the Speedwell and Mayflower to carry them across the Atlantic to a new land in America. The Speedwell had many leaks and had to return back. The Mayflower took in their passengers, making a total of over 100. They sailed two months and three days, cramped and hungry. On November11,1620, the Mayflower spotted land. They landed in Province town, Massachusetts. For over a month, they sent to find the perfect place for them to build their colony. When they finally found a place, they called Plymouth.Right away they started building homes, knowing winter was near.Unfortunately, a violent storm hit when the houses were not yet finished. The Pilgrims were forced to stay on the cramped(狭窄的)Mayflower for their first winter in the new world. When this winter was over, over half of them had died. The Pilgrims eventually made a good friend who helped them. His name was Squanto. He showed them where fish swam, how to hunt deer, and how to plant corn.Squanto was a Native American who was kidnapped(绑架)earlier inhis life and taken to England. This is why he was able to communicate with the Pilgrims. With the help of the Native Americans, there was plenty for everyone to eat that first summer, and also plenty to last for the next winter. The Pilgrims had so much to be thankful for. They gave thanks for friends, new homes, freedom of religion, and plenty of food in a three-day celebration with their Native American friends.Today we continue the celebration of the Pilgrims and the Native Americans, and called it thanksgiving.1. Since I moved to a new town several years ago, we have both always looked forward to the few times a year when we can see each other.Over the weekend, we spent hours and hours, staying up lateinto the night, talking about the people she was hanging around with. She started telling me stories about her new boyfriend, about how he experimented with drugs and was into other self-destructive behavior.I was blown away! She told me how she had been lying to her parents about where she was going and even stealing out to see this guy because they didn’t want her around him. No matter how hard I tried to tell her that she deserver better, she didn’t believe me. Herself-respect seemed to have disappeared.I tried to convince her that she was ruining her future and heading for big trouble. I felt like I was getting nowhere. I just couldn’t believe that she really thought it was acceptable to hang with a bunch of losers, especially her boyfriend.By the time she left, I was really worried about her and exhausted by the experience. It had been so frustrating that I had come close to telling her several times during the weekend that maybe we had just grown too far apart to continue our friendship, but I didn’t. I put the power of friendship to the ultimate test. We’d been friends for far too long. I had to hope that she valued me enough to know that I was trying to save her from hurting herself. I wanted to believe that our friendship could conquer anything.A few days later, she called to say that she had thought long and hard about our conversation, and then she told me that she had broken up with her boyfriend. I just listened on the other end of the phone with tears of joy running down my face. It was one of the truly rewarding moments in my life. Never had I been so proud of a friend.6. Multiple choices (40%)(每小题2分)1--5 D B A C A 6—10 B D A B AQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage:As a century of grand retailing comes to a close, the 94-year-old “merchant prince of Texas”—who turned Neiman Marcus from a small specialty shop into one of the world’s major retail stores—says department stores today must recreate themselves if they are to survive.Marcus is worried that customer service is being ignored. He considers home shopping networks “a step above snake oil peddler(沿街叫卖的小贩).” And despite all the advantages he sees in selling over the Internet, he says it is no substitute for a good salesperson.Today, as head of his own Dallas consultancy(咨询) firm, Marcus is moving into the next century advocating the same philosophy he held throughout the 20th century: focus on quality and service, and sales will take care of themselves.“I’ve always believed that quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten,” says Marcus, who still makes regular visits to the flagship Neiman Marcus store in downtown Dallas, where he looks over new fashion lines, examines the latest fine imported luggage andgreets young salespeople eager to talk with him. “The price of a great meal disappears from the memory, but the price of a bad onewill be remembered for years. If you force a bad buy on a customer, he will never forgive you. ”Marcus puts much of the blame on business schools for what he sees as a lack of quality – and vitality – in department stores. He says the schools are turning out graduates who are excellent money managers and cost cutters, but who lack the skills that helped make the great stores like Macy’s, and his own, into retailing legends. The MBA programs so not teach principles of selling, principles of human understanding, principles of leadership speaking, which, he believes, is the most important thing.“I do not want ‘trained’ salespeople. The word training is the most terrible word. You train dogs and bears to do repetitive action. But with people, you educate them, because no amount of training takes the place of experience that enables them to answer all the questions that customers will ask.”41. What is the problem with department stores today?A. Uncompetitive pricesB. Excessive running costsC. Fierce challenge from the home shopping networkD. Neglect of customer service42. In Marcus‘s view, good salespeople ________.A. will soon be replaced by the InternetB. can compete with peddlersC. ensure the success of a retailing businessD. have recreated department stores43. Which of the following is likely to be long remembered?A. Good serviceB. The price of a good buyC. The price of a bad buyD. Good quality44. What is the problem with MBA programs?A. Failure to teach principles of human understandingB. Too much emphasis on cost cuttingC. Lack of vitalityD. Neglect of strict training45. What is the major difference between training and educating according to Marcus?A. Training is applied to animals while educating is applied to humansB. Training enables the trainee to imitate while educating enriches his experienceC. Training is a terrible word while educating is a wonderful oneD. Training is aimed at action while educating is aimed at answering questionsQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:Several commentators and scientists have suggested that it mightin some cases be ethically acceptable to clone existing people. One possibility is generating a replacement for a dying relative. All such possibilities, however, raise the concern that the clone would be treated as less than a complete inddividual, because he or she would likely be subjected to limitation and expectation based on the family’s knowledge of the genetic “twin.” Those expectations might be false, because human personality is only partly determined by genes. The clone of an extrovert(性格外向的人) could have a quite different way of behavior. Clones of athletes, movie stars, entrepreneurs or scientists might well choose different careers because of chance events in early life. Some people have also put forward th e notion that couples in which one member is infertile might choose to make a copy of one or the other partner. But society ought to be concerned that a couple might not treat naturally a child who is a copy of just one of them. Because other methods are available for the treatment of all known types of infertility, conventional therapeutic avenues seem more appropriate. None of the suggested uses of cloning for making copies of existing people is ehically acceptable to my way of thinking, because they are not in the interests of the resulting child. It should go without saying that I am strongly opposed to allowing cloned human embryos to develop so that they can be tissue donors. It nonetheless seems clear that cloning from cultured cells will offer important medical opportunities. Predictions about new technologies are often wrong: societal attitudes change; unexpecteddevelopments occur. Time will tell. But biomedical researchers looking into the potential of cloning now have plenty to do.21. What is the author’s concern about cloing an existing person?A. The clone created will have one defect or another.B. The clone created will be mistreated.C. The clone created is unlikely to fulfill your expectations.D. The clone created is ethically unacceptable.22. It can be inferred from the text that a clone will _____.A. choose the same career as the person it is created fromB. behave in the same way as the person it is created fromC. share the same characteristics with the person it is created fromD. be partially similar in personality to the person it is created from23. According to the passage, one’s personality is determinedby______.A. their genesB. the environment they live inC. both their genes and the environment they live inD. neither their genes nor the environment they live in.24. In the author’s view, which of the following uses of cloning is justifiable?A. To replace a lost relative.B. To help childrenless couples to have a baby.C. To develop tissue donors.D. To culture cells for medical purposes.25. What is autor’s attitude towards cloning technology?A. It should be condemned.B. It has medical potential for scientists to explore.C. It should wait till people’s views change.D. It was unethical from the very beginning.BDCDB单选My son failed to come back home last night. With the development of economy and technology, the quality of life has become betterand better. As a result, children today are experiencing more and more enjoyment. Their parents will give me unlimited allowance to satisfy them so as to encourage their children to study harder. Consequently. children are turning in to "little princesses" and "little princes" in today's society. This is definitely not the outcome we would love to see. Since children are going to be the future of our society, it is important to train them to develop a sense of independence as well as responsiblity rather than laziness. Parents should realize the seriousness of this problem soon and start to take actions to rescue their children. Otherwise, our society will eventually move towards a direction that everyone doesn't want to face.。

AWhen was the last time you told someone they inspire you to go to work each morning?Teachers at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri, did just that this September, when they pulled individual students out of class to tell them just how much they appreciated them. The students’ reactions, which were captured (捕捉) on video and shared on YouTube in a now-viral video, ranged from shy thanks to hugs and tears.“I have been challenged to find a student who makes me want to come to school every day,” says one teacher in the video, “and that’s you.”Jamie McSparin, a teacher in charge of the sch ool’s academy program for at-risk sophomores (二年级学生)and juniors, posed the challenge, writes ABC News.“Initially when we pulled the kids out, they all thought they were in trouble,” McSparin told ABC News. “Any teacher-student interaction always seems to be negative (消极的), and that was something that bothered me, too. No matter if they’re a good kid or a trouble maker or anything, they always thought they were in trouble,” she says.McSparin says she got the idea for the project after attending a professional developmentworkshop this summer called the power of positivity. Array“I like the idea of letting students know they are appreciated, because we do appreciate them, I just don’t think we say it enough,” she told local news outlet WDAF-TV.It’s safe to say t he challenge was effective.“I feel special,” said one of the boys in the video. “You should,” said his teacher. “You are special.”1、What does the underlined word “posed” in Paragraph 5 mean?A.Presented. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has towork against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increasesresistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase Array your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.1、Crossing legs when sitting may cause the following except______.A.blood pressure increase B.neck and back painC.temporary nerve damage D.numbness in the legs2、Which of the following is true?A.All people are used to sitting with legs crossed without their own notice. ACanada is a bilingual country with "co-official " languages. English and French enjoy equal status as the official languages of all government agencies in Canada. This means that the public has the right to communicate with and receive services from government in either English or French. Government employees have the right to work in the official language of their choice in certain bilingual regions.Like the United States, Canada started as a colony. Beginning in the 1500s it was part of New France bu t later became a British colony after the Seven Years’ War. As a result, the Canadian government recognized the languages of both colonizers: France and England. The Constitution (宪法)Act of 1867 admitted the use of both languages in federal courts. Years later, Canada strengthened its commitment to bilingualism when it passed the Official Languages Act of 1969, which reconfirmed the constitutional origins of its co official languages.Recognition of both English and French protects the rights of all Canadians. Among otherbenefits, the 1969 Act recognized the Canadian citizens should be able to access federal laws and Array government documents, whether their native language was French or English. The general law also requires that consumer products feature bilingual packaging throughout the country. The Canadian government is committed to advancing the equality and the use of English and French and provides support to the development of English and French minority communities. However, the reality is that most Canadians speak English, and of course, many Canadians speak another language entirely.Although the federal government theoretically guarantees bilingual services in all areas, there are many regions where English is the clear majority language so the government does not offer services in French in those regions. Canadians use the phrase "where numbers justify "to indicate whether a local populations language requires bilingual services from the government. While many Canadians are bilingual in English and French, Statistics. Canada finds that over 10 other languages were reported as a language spoken by its people. About two-thirds of the respondents who spoke one of these languages also spoke either English or French1、Why are two official languages accepted in Canada?A.The language-using tradition caused by Canada's colonial historyB.The theoretical commitment made by Canadian courts in the pastC.The welcome attitude towards people coming from all over the worldD.The mastery of two languages of Canadians because of school education2、What is the current situation of official languages in Canada?A.People speaking English are superior because of their access to federal lawsB.Federal governments have to provide bilingual services to all citizens in CanadaC.French minority communities are given more support due to their language-using history D.There are more people speaking English than French in some parts of Canada3、What can we infer from the passage?A.The legal court usage of French and English was established in Canada in 1969.B.Some Canadians in certain districts might speak neither English nor FrenchC.Either French or English should be used on products in Canada according to the law D.English has gained superior legal position to French because of bigger users in Canada4、Which is the best title of the passage?A.The Official Languages in Canada B.Canada, a Multiple-language Land Array C.Balancing English and French in Canada D.Advancing English and French in CanadaBIn the short time Steve and Zach had been inside their tent packing their tools,wind-blown flame had skipped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox.“Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today!” Steve kept Brady on the lead and their heads down against the fire-wind. But Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. The dog was pulling at his lead trying to draw them away from the smoke, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him that they were moving away from the river.Suddenly, Zach cried. “Zach!” Steve shouted. “Are you OK? Where are you?” Then Brady pulled Steve down a sharp slope(坡). At its base, Zach was rubbing his ankle. As Steve helped his friend to his feet, Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅) the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared. The boys shouted for him, but he didn’t come back. Steve couldn’t blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue which way.Steve and Zach hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came bounding, stopped directly in front of Steve and hit him with his head, pushing him back toward the slope they’d just climbed. But Steve didn’t get it. Then Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and started pulling. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of course he remembered Brady saving his uncle’s life when the dog was much you nger. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this?Nearby, a pine went up in a whoosh of smoke. Brady pulled again, urgently. “OK, big guy,” Steve gritted(咬紧牙关). Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Not far from them fire was touching underbrush. Several times the big dog stopped. Often he changed directions. Steve was so tired that he just wanted to rest, but Brady wouldn’t have it. The dog bullied both boys to go on. How long they’d walked Steve had no idea. He was almost numb when he heard it—the wonderful sound of rushing water!1、What happened to Steve and Zach at first?A.They got injured. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words (not exceeding 10 words).1.Skipping ReadingPersonality is to a large extent inherent—a type parents usually bring about a type offspring. But the environment must also have a profound effect, since if competition is important to the parents, it is likely to become a major fact or in the lives of their children. One place where children soak up A characteristics is school, which is, by its very nature, a highly competitive institution. Too many schools adopt the win at all costs moral standard and measure their success by sporting achievements. The current passion for making children compete against their classmates or against the clock produces a two-layer system, in which competitive A types seem in some way better than their B type fellows. Being too keen to win can have dangerous consequences: remember that Pheidippides, the first marathon runner, dropped dead seconds after saying: “Rejoice, we conquer!By far the worst form of competition in schools is the disproportionate emphasis on examinations. It is a rare school that allows pupils to concentrate on those things they do well. The merits of competition by examination are somewhat questionable, but competition in the certain knowledge of failure is positively harmful.Obviously, it is neither practical nor desirable that all A youngsters change into B’s. The world needs types, and schools have an important duty to try to fit a child’s personality to his possible future employment. It is top management. If the preoccupation of schools with academic work was lessened, more time might be spent teaching children surer values. Perhaps selection for the caring professions, especially medicine, could be made less by good grades in chemistry and more by such considerations as sensitivity and sympathy. It is surely a mistake to choose our doctors exclusively from A type stock. B’s are important andshould be encouraged.Questions:1. Beside inherence, personality is also deeply effected by______________________.2. Person who has A characteristics is______________________________________.3. What was disagreed to in schools by the author? ______________________________.4. Why is top management of school to fit a child’s personality____________________.5. According to the 5th Para., B’s characteristic is suggested to be ________________.2.Deeply ReadingKite flying is the sport of sending up into the air,by means of the wind , a light frame covered with paper, plastic or cloth. The frame can be one of many different shapes and is attached to a long string held in the hand or wound on a drum. Kites have a long history of practical application and many different types of kite have been debeloped to serve various purposes. The ancient Chinese used bird-kites to carry ropes across rivers and valleys. The current folding kite which will dive excitingly is an improved type of such a kite. With its long flat body and single pair of bird-like wings,it looks just like a large bird in the air. The modern version is usually made of tissue-paper rather than the traditional silk.Man-lifting kites were developed in ancient times, again by the Chinese, for getting information from walled cities and army camps. In fact , as recently as world 2 ,German U-boats flew kites from their towers to lift people into the air to watch the land. These kites ,which are no longer in existence, were made of light-weight cloth. They were much larger and stronger than the Chinese ones. Their design, however, was simply that of the cutter kite. Smaller in size, this type of kite is still very popular as a toy for children, being easy to make with a diamond-shaped frame,no wings and brown-paper covering.Box-kites are another type of kite found in toy shops today. The first box-kite,named for its box-like body, was developed in the nineteenth century to test theories of flight and this type of cotton-covered kite greatly assisted the success of early aeroplane. These kites are the ancestors of a heavier version of the box-kite,which consists of two main sections, placed side by side. Developed for the peacetime purpose of fishing in strong sea wind,it is the only modern kite described which has practical value . A long-lasting plastic material has to be used for this kite, which carries fishing lines.1.The ancient Chinese bird-kites were usually made of light frames covered with_____.a.silkb.paperc.clothd.plastic2.The kites used by German U-boats in would war 2 for the military purpose were made of _____.a.brown paperb.plastic materialc.light-weight clothd.traditional silk3.The ancient Chinese man-lifting kites were used_____.a.to carry ropes across rivers and valleysb.for the military purposec.as toy for childrend.for fishing in strong sea wind4.Which of the following statements is not ture?a.The frame of a kite is attached to long string held in the hand or wound on drum.b.The ancestor of the double box-kite.c.The cutter kite has a diamond-shaped body but no wings.d.The current folding kite is developed to test theories of flight.5.The best title for this passage may be______.a.The ancestors of modern kitesb. The history of the chinese kitesc.different types and uses of kitesd.the different between ancient and modern kites.3.Fast ReadingWhy Integrity MattersWhat is Integrity?"Integrity" is defined as "adherence to moral and ethical principles; honesty." The key to integrity is consistency--not only setting high personal standards for oneself (honesty, responsibility, respect for others, fairness) but also living up to those standards each day. One who has integrity is bound by and follows moral and ethical standards even when making life's hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or violate other ethical standards? We feel disappointed in ourselves and ashamed. But a lapse of integrity also affects our relationships with others. Trust is essential in any important relationship, whether personal or professional. Who can trust someone who is dishonest or unfair? Thus, integrity must be one of our most important goals.Risky BusinessWe are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decision-making process has been undermined by stress or peer pressure. We must learn to recognize risks, because if we can't see the risks we're taking, we can't make responsible choices. To identify risks, we need to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doesn't know the rules about plagiarism may accidentally use words or ideas without giving proper credit, or one who fails to keep careful research notes may unintentionally fail to quote and cite sources as required. But the fact that such a violation is "unintentional" does not excuse the misconduct. Ignorance is not a defense."But Everybody Does It"Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts, but manage to fool themseelves about the risks they're taking by using excuses: "Everyone else does it," "I'm not hurting anyone," or "I really need this grade." Excuses can get very elaborate: "I know I'm looking at another's exam, even though I'm supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that's not cheating because I'm just checking my answers, not copying." We must be honest about our actions, and avoid excuses. If we fool ourselves into believing we're not doing anything wrong, we can't see the real choice we're making--and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public, and anyone could be watching over your shoulder. Would you feel proud or ashamed of your actions? If you'd rather hide your actions, that's a good indication that you're taking a risk and rationalizing it to yourself.Evaluating RisksTo decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the consequences, in the future as well as right now, negative as well as positive, and to others as well as to yourself. Those who take risks they later regret usually focus on immediate benefits ("what's in it for me"), and simply haven't considered what might go wrong. The consequences of getting caught are serious, and may include a "0" on a test or assignment; an "F" in the class; Suspension or Dismissal from school; transcript notation; and a tarnished reputation. In fact, when you break a rule or law, you lose control over your life, and give others the power to impose punishment: you have no control over what that punishment might be. This is an extremely precarious and vulnerable position. There may be some matters of life and death, or highest principle, which might justify such a risk, but there aren't many things that fall in this category.Getting Away With It--Or NotThose who don't get caught pay an even higher price. A cheater doesn't learn from the test, depriving him/herself of an education. Cheating undermines confidence and independence: the cheater is a fraud, and knows that without dishonesty, he/she would have failed. Cheating destroys self-esteem and integrity, leaving the cheater ashamed, guilty, and afraid of getting caught. Worst of all, a cheater who doesn't get caught the first time usually cheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems "easier." This slippery slope of eroding ethics and bigger risks leads only to disaster. Eventually, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the consequences. Students have been dismissed from school because they didn't get this simple message: Honesty is the ONLY policy that works.Cheating Hurts Others, TooCheaters often feel invisible, as if their actions "don't count" and don't really hurt anyone. But individual choices have a profound cumulative effect. Cheating canspread like a disease, and a cheater can encourage others just by being seen from across the room. Recent statistics suggest 30% or more of college students cheat. If a class is graded on a curve, cheating hurts others' grades. Even if there is no curve, cheating "poisons" the classroom, and others may feel pressured to join in. ("If I don't cheat, I can't compete with those who do.") Cheating also has a destructive impact on teachers. The real reward of good teaching is seeing students learn, but a cheater says, "I'm not interested in what you're trying to teach; all I care about is stealing a grade, regardless of the effect on others." The end result is a blatant and destructive attack on the quality of your education. Finally, cheating can hurt the reputation of the University, and harm those who worked hard for their degree. Why Integrity MattersIf cheating becomes the norm, then we are in big trouble. We must rely on the honesty and good faith of others every day. If not, we couldn't put money in the bank, buy food, clothing, or medicine from others, drive across a bridge, get on a plane, go to the dentist--the list is endless. There are many examples of the vast harm that is caused when individuals forget or ignore the effect their dishonesty can have. The savings and loan scandal, the stock market and junk bond swindles, and, of course, Watergate, have undermined the faith of many Americans in the integrity of political and economic leaders and society as a whole. Such incidents take a tremendous toll on our nation's economy and our individual well-being. For example, but for the savings and loan debacle, there might be funds available to reduce the national debt and pay for education. In sum, we all have a common stake in our school, our community, and our society. Our actions do matter. It is essential that we act with integrity in order to build the kind of world in which we want to live.1.
