Balance sheet7.Junk bonds8.共同农业政策 9.外国直接投资 10.社会保障Ⅱ Read the following passages and then choose the best answer to each question. (75 points, 2.5 points for each item)Passage1NEW TASTE FOR SPENDINGSouth Korean workers have lots more money in their wallets after three years of double-digit wage increases. Now they are starting to spend it. From the billion-dollar Lotton World entertainment complex in Seoul to crowded car showrooms in cities and jammed parking lots at resort hotels, consumer businesses are surging. The boom in consumer spending is buoying the economy in what has been a relatively sluggish year. First half GNP grew only 6.5%, the slowest first-half growth since 1981. “The growth was led by private consumption, which was up almost 10%”says Assistant Trade and Industry Minister Kim Chul Soo. Exports so far have been flat. While exporters are moaning, manufacturers can barely keep pace with the domestic demand. Sales of consumer durables, such as refrigerators, air conditioners and video tape recorder have all been extremely strong.A drive through the increasingly clogged streets of Seoul brings home the strength of the consumer boom. Cars are backordered for months from South Korea’s carmakers, who are struggling to keep up with domestic demand for the latest status symbol: “My car”. More than half a million new cars are expected to be rolling along South Korea’s crowded roads this year, with gross domestic vehicle sales up an estimated 60%.Sales of imported cars are also growing quickly, though from a tiny base. The Korea Automobiles Association forecasts sales of almost 1,500 foreign cars this year. Since about one-third of those cars are BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes, which set the South Korean buyer back about US$100 000 each after tariffs and taxes are paid, the locals’ penchant to flaunt their new wealth is even more apparent.Overall, consumer-goods imports grew by one-third during the first half while capital-goods imports were up only 15%.The government’s liberalization program has been so successful in cutting the trade surplus that officials have begun suggesting to the local press that they will begin slowing down imports of non-essential items, such as consumer goods, The National Importers Association has asked its agents to take part in this campaign.South Koreans are also starting to take their holidays seriously. Two years ago it was hereticalfor employees to take more than a few days annual leave. Now they are using their full week of, in somecases, two weeks.Newspapers and opinion makers continue to decry extravagant consumption. But their appeals to Confucian frugality seem to be losing姓名 班级 学号 ―――――――――装――――――――――订―――――――――线―――――――――――their punch. Government officials are worried that South Koreans are embracing the consumer culture with a bit too much gusto “If (consumer spending) accounts for our 7% growth, then the economy is headed for serious trouble,” says Koo Bohn Yohn Young, a presidential economic adviser, who worries about flat exports and weak capital investment.Longer term, of course, Koo is correct. This year, however, higher consumer spending is a needed spur for a sluggish-by South Korean standards-economy. The Korea Development Institute (KDI) cut its growth estimates twice in 10 days during August and now reckons the GNP will grow 7.4% for the year. The institute says consumption expenditures will rise 9.5%. The slower growth these years is good news for Seoul’s anti-inflation efforts. KDI expects consumer prices, which rose 7.1% last year, to increase a more moderate 6% this year. The government also shows signs of easing its restrictive monetary policy. Interest rates have edged down in recent weeks.By Mark Cliffford FAR EASTERN ECONOMIC REVIEW/ SEPTEMBER 14, 1989 Glossary:Penchant: a strong attraction.Flaunt: attract notice to oneself in a satisfied way.Heretical: contrary to dominant belief.Decry: find fault with.Gusto: zest, eagernessLotto: a game played for moneyComplex: a building consisting of many closely related parts.Punch: effective powerFrugality: with no waste11. The article indicates that domestic car sales are rising sharply in SouthKorea becauseA) People have more money to spend than a few years ago.B) Foreign cars are making fast inroads on Korean domestic markets, forcing domestic carmakers to cut down prices.C) South Koreans believe that an inflation is pending and storing a car is anideal way to hedge price increase.D) South Koreans have more holidays than before.13. Paul Horne, economist for Smith Barney, HarrisUpham 8 Co., here says, “Europe’s not so bad off.”The optimism is not just the result of increased economic activity ----- though that is a factor. There is also a feeling here that Europe has beengradually taking its more basic economic problem, and that results arestarting to surface.Much of the fashionable economic policies of the 1970s have been reversed. Then many of Europe’s leaders were promoting a massconsumption society, enlarging the welfare state, stimulating economicgrowth even if it meant more inflation, and installing more business andsocial regulation. They were advocating or enacting the indexation of wagesagainst inflation.Today these moves are regarded as elements of European weakness.France and Italy for example, have limited indexation. There are movestoward more labor and wage flexibility in most European nations.Politicians, even in socialist France, openly say that business needs moreprofits ---- a bigger share of the economic pie ---in order that it can invest injob creating ventures. Nearly all European Governments have moved torestrain inflation ----with major success ---- at the price of highunemployment.Further, most European government have taken steps to either shrink their own size or at least half the growth in the portion of the output ofgoods and services absorbed by the state.Stock market investors say, brokerage house economist Paul Horne, have already recognized the change for the better in Europe---- a more than$3 trillion market. Stock prices have soared to record highs in recent weeksin Paris, Frankfurt, and Zurich. Shares in London are well above their levelof a year ago.Corporations are recording handsome increases in earnings. They are spending some of that money on modern equipment and, to lesser degree,on expansion of capacity.Although Mr. Horne does not claim that Western Europe can overtake American and Japanese competitiveness, research, or dynamism, he notesthat “numerous European governments are making progress in dealing with3 / 7problems long considered virtually hopeless and which seemed to condemn Europe to a dismal failure”Mr. Develle agrees. As evidence of European revival, he notes the upward thrust of capital spending and relatively modest increase in labor costs in the European Community (EC).“Restructuring of the EC’s old in dustries is not complete, but substantial progress has been made over the past 10 years.” He says. The European steel industry has shrunk dramatically both in capacity and in the size of its work force; some steel companies even had profits last year. Capacity also has been sharply trimmed in textile, shipbuilding, and oil refining.Employment in more competitive industries has begun to grow, adds Horne. There has been a surge in the formation of new companies in Britain, West Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. But job creation has been far slower here than in the U.S., Economists say, Europe’s job count today is no higher than in 1970s. The U.S. economy has added 30 million jobs.Central banks in Europe have moved, almost as a unit, to curtail the growth of money and thus inflation. By one broad measure of money, known as M3, money growth has slowed in Western Europe from 2.5% in 1982 to 0.5% at the end of the last year. Inflation, running at a 10.6percent annual rate in Europe during the decade 1971 to 1981, was climbing at a 4.2 percent rate in the last six months. The governments of West Germany, France, Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands Spain and Sweden have moved toward greater fiscal restraint. The average government deficit in the EC declined from 5.6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 1982 to 5.4 percent last year.Such changes reflect the political shifts in Europe. Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative Party has been in power since 1979. In Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, center-right coalitions took over in the years 1980-1982. Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s conservative –liberal coalition accentuated the rightward shift with his election in March 1983.Even the leaders of leftwing governments in France, Greece, Spain, and Italy have moved toconservative economic policies.“There are changes for the better in Europe, ” concludes Mr. Horne, a free market enthusiast.“Although the millennium is not here yet and much structural rigidity remain to impede free markets, efforts are being made. The political will forpositive change by most European governments is strong and their policiesare pointing in the right direction.”21. According to the articleA. economic situation in Europe is soothing Newsweek’s forecast.B. economic situation in Europe is defying Newsweek’s forecast.C. Newsweek economists don’t like to see a proud and powerful Europe.D. Newsweek is trying to deny the better economic prospect in Europe.22. In 1966 the corporation income tax provided 23 percent of all government receipts. By 1983 the figure had dropped to 6.2 percent, but by 1987 it climbed to 10.2 percent. The corporation income tax often criticized as double taxation. Not only must the company pay taxes on its profits, but individual shareholders must also pay personal income taxes on dividends paid by the company. The principle of ability to pay is ignored in taxing dividend income. The small stockholder has been given some relief by the provision allowing taxpayers to deduct the first $100 they receive in dividends from their personal income. In addition, money that is considered a capital gained from the increase in the value of stock sold at least six months after its purchase is considered a capital gain. The law allows the seller of such stock to pay a lower tax rate on the capital gain. However, gains from stock owned for less than six months are taxed at the rate of regular income.Mary business people have complained—probably with some justification – that high corporate taxes interfere with their opportunities to reinvest their profits in their business. Such interference can hinder the growth and modernization of businesses. Some industrial nations that have expanded readily in the last 15 years have far lower taxes on corporations than the United States does. Many economists believe that low corporationtaxes have been a help in this business expansion.A corporation income tax is based on a corporation’s annual incomeafter it has paid its expenses. Dividends to stockholders are not included asexpenses. Recent changes in the tax law have reduced the rates in order toencourage business investment in research and new capital equipment .Thenew rates more progressive, increasing from 15 percent on the first $25,000of taxable income to 46 percent on all taxable income above $100,000. Theincidence of the tax tends to fall on the stockholders in highly competitivebusiness and shifting the tax to the consumer would raise prices and cutdown on sales.36.Double taxation, according to second paragraph, includes .A. personal income taxes by shareholders and dividends paid by thecompanyB. personal income taxes paid by company on dividends and on its profitsC. taxes paid on the profits of company and those on personal incomeD. taxes paid on dividends by shareholders and those paid by the companyon its profits37. Capital gain is from .A. increased value of stock sold at least six months after it is boughtB. increased value of stock sold less than six months after it is boughtC. stock owned for less six monthsD. stock purchased at a lower price38. This is an extended interview which is made up of a series of group activities, tests and presentations. You will be assessed throughout the day by assessors who will be looking to see how well you work in a team, whether your communication skills are good and whether you can work to deadlines. Team work is important. You don’t do yourself any favours by trying to take over the group, but at the same time, don’t sit back and let everyone else do the work..Don’t panic if you’re asked to do a presentation on something you don’t know much about as the way you give the presentation on something you don’t know much about as the way you give the presentation is often more important than the content itself. You should practise beforehand so you know how long the presentation takes. The best advice on dealing with a selection centre is to give it your best shot. If you sit timidly in the corner, the assessor cannot make any judgement about you. When you take a personality test, which is designed to find out about your personality and character, what your values are and what motivates you, don’t worry about answering questions incorrectly-there is usually no point in trying to give the answers you think the employer will wantbecause firstly you might have the wrong idea about what the employer is looking for, and secondly, you don’t want to get the job and spend the ensuing months trying to be someone who you’re not.1.What is the passage mainly concerned with2.How should you behave during the day at the selection centre3.How should applicants approach giving presentations4.Does it matter if you answer questions incorrectly in a personality test Why5.What does the author say about lying in a personality testPassage 2 (15 points)Despite the attention paid within advertising agencies to the whole business targeting specific groups, there have been some spectacular failures to get it right when companies have tried to go international or global with their products. This has been for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, the brand name of the product has unfortunate associations when translated into foreign languages. Looking at this been for a variety of connotation is –the way in which words can call up associations in our minds. Because of the way we make connections between words and particular ideas, feeling and experiences, brand names are crucial for advertisers get it right, readers will do the work to generate all the intended connotations. There are whole companies who specialize in offering research on brand-name connotations to product manufacturers looking for a name for a new product, or looking at how best to market an existing product to new, foreign audiences. These companies-for example Interbrand, and The Brandnaming Company-typically organize brainstorming sessions where they ask groups of people to let their imaginations ‘roam free’, from which meetings they arrive at shortlists of names whose suitability is then researched further. Names on the shortlists have to pass certain test: for example, that they are not too close to existing names; that they are pronounceable in all the world’s major languages; that they have the right connotations can be about quite subtle distinctions. For example, when Pickfords Travel merged with Hogg Robinson two years ago, the shortlist for th e new company had two main contenders: ‘Destinations’ and ‘Going Places’. Section B: Translate the passage into Chinese (1×20分,共20分)Mexico. The origins of outsourcing here can be traced to NAFTA, signed in 1993. The elimination of trade barriers created profit opportunities for the production of goods and services in Mexico. Even though productivity was lower in Mexico than in the U.S., and there were additional transportation costs, the wages in the country were low enough to compensate. The search for higher profits led to a shift in production facilities to Mexico. U.S. consumers were happy because they were able to buy similar products at lower prices. Mexican workers were happy as the higher demand for labor services resulted in higher wages. The standard of living for Mexican worker’s rose. NAFTA was a win -win situation. It’s not hard to see why outsourcing has become such a major political issue. The benefits of outsourcing — lower prices and higher profits — are spread out among shareholders and consumers. Consumers see lower prices and shareholders see higher profits. The stock market, when strong enough, offsets any protectionist pressure generated by the fear of job loses due to higher imports or job outsourcing. The investor class understands that a rising tide lifts all boats.错误!未找到引用源。
