About this dialogue: Cici and Chhichi
(1) Should ‘factory farming’ be banned?
Ci: Hello, chhichi, Do you know the so-called “Factory farming” ?
C: yes,I have heard it from newspapers , books or something just like internet. Factory farming is a system that feeds animals by using modern methods.
Ci: With a great consumption in different kinds of meat, many kinds of meat industries are booming during the past years.
C: In the Factory farming, where sheep, cattle and poultry are confined indoors under strictly controlled conditions.
Ci: Oh Yes, Much of the meat we eat today is produced by this method, but the side-effect which it brings about we can not neglect, such as serious environment problems. Should it be banned?
C: I think that "Factory farming is very necessary in the developing world and should be reformed, not banned."
Ci: I shouldn't agree with your opinion, Factory farming is very cruel. Many animals may never touch the ground or see direct sunlight. they have no freedom.
C:But I think that There is very little cruelty or suffering in factory farming. This is not the fault of the Factory farming, it’s just the ways that can increase productivity and reduced operating costs
Ci: Actually,in some degree, They cannot grow up in natural ways, they are feeded with forage which would do harm to our health.
C: They are more easily monitored by law so the animals often fare better than they would have done in normal farming – that is to say there is no truth that factory farming is particularly cruel.
Ci:Maybe the reality it is true, but the side-effect which it bring about we can not neglect.
K:Yes,it also need our government’s contronl.
(2) Do "beauty" contests serve any purpose in society?
J: Do you hear about the beauty contests? or have you seen this program?
A: Yes I do, I am very like watching it from TV, There are many different kinds of beauty contests these days.
J: What do you think about these beauty contests? Do beauty contests really serve a purpose in today’s society?
A: In my opinion, Beauty contests do not serve a purpose in today’s society. The only thing that it is doing is putting in young girls’ minds and a woman’s that they have to be beautiful.
J: I can not agree with you, They are for both men and women and range from children to adults in age; there are many advantages from it,it not only can entertain the public, but also can show your talent, knowedge, and your courage, too.
A: They have a negative effect on the people in today’s society,
especially the younger female population. Women in beauty contests are judged on their physical appearance rather than on any other qualities, so they spend much time in making up their outside appearance not the inside character.
J: In my words, the beauty contests both have advantages and disadvantages, as a college, who should establish the correct aesthetic.
A: Yes, we should pursuit the intrinsic beauty, not judge a person only from the appearance.
J: We should have the right attitude to the beauty contests, only in this way, we can establish a correct outlook on life, values, and world view.
A: I agree with your opinion, Jason
(3) To what extent should bilingual education be offered in college education?
J: Hi, Addison, do you like the bilingual education in our class?
A: Yes, I do, we can learn English as we study the knowledge in the same time.
J: I agree with your opinion, but sometimes I could not understand what the teachers say because my English is not very good, some other students have the same problem.
A: Oh, that is an indeed problem for you.
J: In your opinion, to what extent should bilingual education be offered in our college education?
A: The extent to bilingual education should depend on how the students perform under this type of learning and their English level, compared to general education students.
J: In the class when the teacher would say in English, then translated into Chinese, I could understand them.
A: Bilingual Education is a program used to help students keep up with all their required academic competencies. so the teachers should know what is the students’ English level.
A: The teacher can separate the students into different groups based on their English level. perhaps this is a good way.
J: Well, I will try my best to study English, Wish me a good luck.
A: I am confident with you, you will study it well as long as you stick with it.
J: Thank you, I am pleased to your encouragement.
(4)Do children learn better in boys-only and girls-only school?
J:hey Addison,I’ve herad that u pl an to send your little Emily to the single-sex school?
A:well,I think that’s the perfect choice. being a student in a learning environment with all girls was the perfect way to foster learning skills.
J: On the surface, it might be easy to say students learn better
in single sex schools. however, things would be so
complicatied. by thinking about the human nature, we might find that single-gender education is too oversimplified aiming
to have a better education.
A:So?
J: We should not ignore the fact that we live in this world with man and woman. suppose that student who study at single-sex school, once they step into the society, it will be something miserable.
A:actually, it does. However, imaging that student who study at the same classroom, it would happen something that we parent do not want to. What I need to emphasize here is early love, it may, in some degree, disturb girls and boy s’observation, and at the same time, exert a bad atmosphere.
J:well, maybe I have to think about it by considering your opinion.
A:emmmm…it indeed. And what I want to say is, we parents are trying to find someway that can do some good to our children. And hope that we can conquer it, and kill the bird with one stone.
(5) Why do normally patient people become impatient behind the wheel?
A: Jason, can you drive a car?
J: Actuall, I can. But It’s pity that I don’t have a ca r.
A: well, never mind. You will got one once you step into the society. Do you hear an interesting thing that normally patient people will become more impatient behind the wheel ?
J: Oh, I know a little about it before, but what is the cause?
A: I am not quite know about it, I only have read some reports about it before.
J: I learn it from the internet that it has a specialized term called "road anger disorder" in medicine. It says that when people drive a car, they will become more impatient.
A: Yes, people will be in a state of high concentration and tension when they drive a car.
J: In that case, we will get more pressure, the body will produce some substance which can lead us to be more impatient.
A: Maybe, another cause is when people drive a car, they have to face the crowded traffic and in this situation people will easily get agitated.
J: You are right, I agree with you.
A: Studies have shown that some automobile exhaust gases will cause some changes about the neurotransmitter level in the brain.
J: Perhaps that is the main reason, with the development of medicine, we will find out the cause in the future.
A: So for the sake of safety, we should’t drive tired.
J: And we should not do drunk driving too.
A: hey Jason, we will hold a football match this afternoon, which team do you think would win this match finally?
J:I don’t think the result is so important.
A: why? can’t you hear the noise made by our students? They are discussing how can they want to win this competitive game.
J:well, I do know our heroes pay so much time and energy on this competition, and all of us really want to get a pleased result. But the most important thing is that we gain friendship as they are not only opponents but also friends to make us improve during the competition.
A:we can’t keep friendship forever, the moment we grow up, we would find jobs in different cities , study abroad, busy with our works on hand, on this occasion, how can we handle the thing that we should both have friend and win the competition similarly?
J:the life is not based on competition, we have our family, our lover, children, and friends, maybe, while we fail the competition then this in return we can make our good friend
A:I’m sure you would change this view when you are involved in the real society. Which is relentless, we must improve our ability to fit the society through every competition. We have to
survive. We have to make us successful and lose our friendship.
J:Do you really think that you should pursue the status and creature comfort, I prefer the process in the game, I would be happy and exciting to make friends with different backgrounds, so that they can enrich my knowledge and experience.
A:well, to some degree, you are right, sometimes ,the result
means you can get the only opportunity maybe, the champion,
the position in a big corporation, the last chance to study
abroad in Yale, we have no choice but to win, to realize our
goals and dreams, we must be responsible for ourselves.
J:Emmm…. I don’t mean to persuade you, everyone has his right to live his life, aha, you just remember one thing that you shouldn’t be negret while you are too old to move.
A:fine, I won’t.
