The Background

Though Chaucer and Boccaccio shared some (about thirty two) years in their lifetime，England and Italy did not share the same historical period．

At Boccaccio’s time，the emerging bourgeois in Italy are getting more and more prosperous in terms of wealth .So the wisdom of businessmen is highly praised， corruption of ecclesiastic people is severely criticized and asceticism of the Christianity is completely rejected in The Decameron．
In Chaucer’s time，England was in her late Medieval [midɪ'ivəl] Age（中世纪时代），while Italy was already in her Renaissance [rɪ'neɪsəns ] period (文艺复兴时 期) in Boccaccio’s time .

the contents of the tales in the Canterbury and the stories of the Decameron themselves．

The twenty-four tales in The Canterbury Tales cover most social aspects of late Medieval England including politics，economics，law and social life．
The Contents

The “Prologue” of the Tales and the “Preface” together with the “Introduction” of the Decameron both serve as the opening part in the two works separately．

一、两部作品简介
1、薄迦丘与《十日谈》（Decameron， 1348-1353）
方平、王科一序《幸福在人间！》 （意）桑克提斯把《十日谈》与《神曲》 （Divine Comedy）相提并论，称之为宣传 “幸福在人间”的“人曲”（Human Comedy）。 故事集是欧洲第一部现实主义文学作 品，欧洲近代短篇小说的奠基之作。

Boccaccio does not offer much information in his short “Preface” to The Decameron． On the contrary，Chaucer describes both a lot and in detail the background of the pilgrimage， the cause of the idea of storytelling activity while riding towards the destination．

2. 乔叟（1340——1400）与《坎特伯 雷故事集》
收有24个故事，读法：总引＋开场白 ＋故事（例如，巴斯妇,The Wife of Bath；武士侍从；女尼；磨坊主；厨师； 法役等），创立了双韵体诗。

Chaucer deals mainly with three estates in The Canterbury Tales：knight (the nobility)，the working-man (the third estate) and the eeelesiastie (the church)．The economic situations of different people are revealed by the description of the characters，clothing and social backgrounds．
