Course Description:

This course examines in a roughly chronological order the main Western critical theories, beginning from ancient Greece to the 20th century. The classical periods cover theorists in Greco-Roman, medieval, Renaissance, Neoclassical, Enlightenment and the late 19th century, while modern and contemporary periods select texts from Russian Formalism in the early decades of the 20th century to the Cultural Studies in the nineties. The chief objective of the course is, through reading the representative texts, to raise the students’ awareness of critical theory and discuss with them the most influential speculations on the intellectual traditions and recent trends in the field. It will concentrate on a number of questions, such as the locus of literary meaning, the status of the text, the role of the reader, the function of language in literary exegesis, the referentiality of literature, and the relation of literature and society. It is understood that this course is of general interest to MA students specializing in linguistics, translatology and literary studies, which can help them acquire better theoretical means and critical approaches in their specific field of study.
