This story tells the story of the hero accidentally accidentally drifting to London, Londons two billionaire brothers made a bet. Elder brother think if you give him a $one million pounds, 30 days later he will be unable to prove that the money is his own and starved to death, and the younger brother is think he will live very well. And got good jobs from brother, lived a happy life.Ive realized people for the money, try very hard to bring one person, to the bow, and all aspects from obedience to him and arranged everything in place, just for the money. To have no money people, rude, arrogant to the rich people, honestly. It makes me feel very angry, everything should be equal, and these people have only value money, as long as the rich man will treat him very well, but have no money will be arrogant rude. Everyone is equal the reasonable use where go to?In our life, but also often have such a thing, everyone cried out, should be equal, but see the rich man, but the lack of one by one all, just want to get more money, earn a little more, I dont think this is a very vital qi, I hope everyone can, put the correct injustices in the city!

The White Death" by Jack London is a gripping and atmospheric short story that explores the themes of survival, isolation, and the relentless power of nature. The story follows the journey of two gold prospectors, Mason and Ruth, as they traverse the treacherous Yukon wilderness during the unforgiving winter months. As they navigate through treacherous ice fields and freezing temperatures, they encounter the titular "white death" –the brutal cold that threatens to consume them both.London's vivid prose paints a chilling portrait of the unforgiving landscape and the psychological toll it takes on Mason and Ruth. The isolation and loneliness they experience amplifies their fears and desperation, driving them to the brink of madness.Through a series of harrowing encounters with wolves, hallucinations, and near-death experiences, Mason andRuth's resolve is tested to its limits. They must confront their own mortality and grapple with the profound solitude that surrounds them.Ultimately, the story serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of human life and the indomitable spirit that resides within us. Despite the overwhelming odds, Mason and Ruth display unwavering determination and resilience, proving that even in the face of adversity, hope can prevail.

This time I want to talk about a very famous short story written by Mark Twain---------“The Million Pound Note”。
Referring to Mark Twain, you must feel familiar, because we must have read his works before. I still remember the article“The Bite Events on the Train”in our textbook when I’m in the middle school. What touched me most at that time were his ironic words. Yes, he is a great humorist, novelist, writer and orator in America in nineteenth century. During his 40 years’ writing career, he created dozens of short or long stories. This story tells about a poor but honest American Adam Henry. When he was wandering in the street of London, he was given by two billionaires a letter, in which he surprisedly found a £1,000,000 pound bank-note. Later he got to know that the two billionaires who were brothers had made a bet about the results after he got a one million-pound note at once. One of them thought the note wound count for nothing to the poor man because he could not prove that the money was his own while the other considered just as the opposite.Dramatically, the plot went just out of my expectation. Herry went to a restaurant to have dinner first. The manager was mean to him at the beginning but his attitude changed quickly when Herry took out the note and asked for change. Faced with a millionaire, the manager apologized again and again and obsequiously told Herry that he didn’t need to pay for the bill right now. So Herry managed to have a free dinner. Then similarly, Herry went to a clothing shop and got a suit of clothes costing him nothing.Like the plot above, people are curious of such a rich man and tried every means to cozy up to him, from free food, free clothes to free accommodation. At the same time, his social status was becoming higher and higher and finally higher than most dukes. Apart from that, he later got a beautiful wife and 200,000 pounds of bank interest. I can imagine a bright future was waiting for him.The writing style of this story is so humorous. Mark Twain used hyperbole describing how our hero defeated snobbishness repeatedly. What I appreciate most is the detailed description of different people’s ridiculous actions before one million pounds, vivid, funny, ironic and humorous, which forms a Caricature. In terms of the theme, it is apparent that the author wanted to denounce the overflowing mammonism in the society. Even now it gives us an impressive lesson. Yes, I cannot deny the importance of money to a person who wants to survive. We won’t live without money, with which we get food, clothes, house and many other necessities. But we must know that there are many things which can’t be bought with money such as love or friendship. So in my opinion, money may be important to us, but not the most important. We need to build up the correct sense of money. To sum up, this story is a really good work of Mark Twain. The lesson I’ve learnt from it makes me want to be an honest man sincerely and lets me not to worship money too much.

As I finished reading the short stories of O. Henry, I was left with a bittersweet feeling. On one hand, the simplistic language and easy-to-follow plots were a welcome respite from the gripping suspense and complex characters that I was used to. On the other hand, I realized the incredible power of O. Henry in conveying profound messages in such a light-hearted way.It is fascinating to note how all his short stories are interwovenwith surprise endings, which are both ingenious and unexpected. One of the most memorable stories, “The Gift of the Magi” is a perfect example of how his writing can touch the reader and evoke strong emotions. The themes of love, sacrifice, and selflessness are exceptionally portrayed in the story of a young couple who sadly miss getting each other the perfect gift in their attempts to show their love for one another. The gift, however, was not the most valuable thing they had to offer and the conclusion of the story, as always in O. Henry’s fashion, leaves the reader smiling and appreciative of the meaning behind the tale.Another story that stood out for me was “The Cop and the Anthem.” The protagonist being a homeless, well-dressed man who tries his best to get arrested and jailed during the winter season when the nights are harsh and frosty, desperate for a warm bed and three meals a day. The story goes on with the main character's countless attempts to break the law, all of which are immediately dismissed by the police authorities. Finally, as he sits on a bench shivering in the cold, a church bell rings in the distance, and he is struck withan overwhelming urge to become a good, productive member of society. The story highlights the desperation and despair of thehomeless people in the early 20th century and the lengths they had to go to secure basic needs like food and shelter.Overall, what makes O. Henry’s short stories so memorable and unique is his ability to present deep human emotions and experiences through casual and relaxed writing. All the stories are permeated with a touch of humor, insight, and wisdom, which makes them highly relatable and enjoyable. It is easy to see why O. Henry is considered one of the great American short story writers, and the selected pieces of his work that I read have done nothing but cement that opinion in my mind.O. Henry's stories also offer a glimpse into early 20th-century America, with its bustling cities and distinct social classes. His characters, whether they are struggling artists, gamblers, or street vendors, represent the diverse makeup of American society. Through his simple yet lyrical prose style, O. Henry captures the unique rhythms and cadences of American English, making his stories even more accessible and enjoyable. Many of his stories also explore the themes of deception and betrayal, with characters often leading double lives or tricking others for personal gain. In "The Last Leaf," for instance, we see an elderly artist deceive her neighbor into believing that a falling leaf is the harbinger of her impending death. But in the end, it is the artist who sacrifices herself for the sake of her neighbor's health. Such clever twists and turns in O. Henry's tales make them all the more gripping and memorable.A notable feature of O. Henry's stories is his use of dialogue, which is often humorous and quirky. He portrays his characterswith unusual mannerisms and quirks, making them instantly recognizable and endearing to readers. His stories are also well-known for their symbolism and allegory, particularly in their depiction of the American Dream and individualism. In conclusion, O. Henry's short stories offer a unique window into early 20th-century America, capturing the hopes, struggles, and aspirations of its people. His writing style is accessible, often humorous, and always heartwarming. Whether it's the touching tale of the "The Gift of the Magi" or the poignant narrative of "The Cop and the Anthem," O. Henry's stories will continue to inspire and engage readers for generations to come.。
