A
That Christmas Eve, everyone, it seemed, was got together with someone else smiling or laughing. I was alone.
As the eldest of a Greek family of 11 children growing up in New York’s crowded apartment, I’d spent much of my life seeking loneliness. Every part of me wanted to be alone, but not at Christmas. My family had returned to Greece, my friends had gone home during the holiday break, and my friends were involved in their own lives. Dusk was falling, and the inevitable(不可避免的)return to my empty apartment brought tears to my eyes. I wished someone would emerge from one of those homes to ask me inside to a warm room with a Christmas tree decorated with wrapped presents.
I stopped at the local market, feeling even more depressed as people filled their baskets with goodies. Dates and walnuts reminded me of the gifts we received as children in Greece on Christmas Day. I missed my family. I wanted to cry for wanting to be alone and for having achieved it.
As I walked home, I realized that the story of Joseph and Mary wandering from door to door seeking shelter was much like my own history. Leaving Greece was still a wound in my soul as I struggled with who I had become in 15 years in the United States. I’d mourned(哀悼)the losses, but for the first time, I recognized what I’d gained. I was independent, educated, healthy, and adventurous. My life was still before me, full of possibility.
Sometimes the best gift is the one you give yourself. That Christmas, I gave myself credit for wha t I’d achieved so far and permission to go forward, unafraid. It is the best gift I’ve ever received, the one that I most treasure.
21. What does the underlined sentence mean in the third paragraph?
A. The author was glad to feel the Christmas atmosphere.
B. The author had been wishing to be alone but now he hated it.
C. The author felt better when seeing people preparing for the Christmas.
D. The author had been hating to be alone and especially hated it at Christmas.
22. What gift did the author give himself according to the last two paragraphs?
A. He realized the importance of family and friends.
B. He met with a friend coming from his hometown.
C. He was more confident about himself and the future.
D. He spent the Christmas Eve with a newly-made friend.
23. What did the author think of his experience in America?
A. Exciting but hopeless.
B. Struggling but rewarding.
C. Stressed and helpless.
D. Risky and encouraging.
B
November 11th, also known as the “bare sticks holiday” and a day originally meant for young people to celebrate being single, has become the world’s largest 24-hour online shopping carnival. Forum(论坛) readers share their opinions.
Blonde Amber (Ireland)
There is nothing to be proud of to be in a country that spends so much online on a particular day. It does nothing more than show the superficiality(肤浅)of the temporary pleasure of shopping, and produces nothing more than a mountain of environmental waste. I bet there is plenty of “buyers’ remorse” after this day.
Vivian (US)
Since it is Sin gles’ Day, I guess only the single population of China should buy something to relieve social pressure. The married might be excluded(排除)from the festival.
Alex (US)
Singles’ Day was initiated(创始)by a group of college students to celebrate being single, or not having a girlfriend or boyfriend. They think poor guys should buy something on the day to entertain themselves. But Jack Ma got hold of the opportunity, hit the jackpot and successfully made it a yearly shopping spree(狂欢).
George (Canada)
I work in Sh anghai. Many of my young female colleagues are still single. They simply haven’t time to date, as they tend to work long hours and travel two hours by subway to get to and from work. Singles’ Day is a day when they spoil themselves with online shopping.
Patrick (Australia)
I don’t care if it is Singles’ Day or a shopping spree. It sounds fair enough to me. Just a click and I can get the best deals I have ever seen delivered to my door, and save money and time.
24. What does the underlined word “remorse” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Surprise.
B. Joy.
C. Regret.
D. Excitement.
25. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. To Buy or Not to Buy?
B. A Global Shopping Spree
C. Jack Ma and the Double Eleven
D. Singles’ Day or Shopping Spree?
26. Where can we most probably find this passage?
A. From a textbook.
B. From a poster.
C. From a website.
D. From an advertisement.

Many students have already chosen whether or not to apply for Early Decision (ED). The official deadline for most colleges and universities with an ED application is Nov 1st at 11:59 p.m.
Early Decision has risks. 31 However, ED comes with some nice perks(好处).The two biggest advantages are:
1. Early notification (通知). Students apply early and are notified early — usually by December 15.
2. A boost(提高)in acceptance. With just a little bit of research, you can find out the acceptance rate for students who apply normally and those who apply through ED. You might be surprised. 32 What questions do you need to ask before you make the ED choice?
First, consider academic fit. Are you satisfied with the amount of research you’ve done to make a four-year commitment(承诺)to this school? Have you spent enough time on the college’s website to understand the academic offerings? 33 Do you think you’d struggle to keep up with the other students in class?
34 Are you sure you’ll like the c limate? Is it the right size (not too big, not too small)? Is the emphasis on sports, arts, culture, etc. right for you? Do you like the surrounding area? Is it enough to keep you entertained, or is it too overwhelming (难应付的)?
35 If you apply for Early Decision and are accepted, will you be able to attend if you are not offered any financial aid?If the answer is “no”, then you probably should reconsider applying through ED, because you will need to withdraw(撤回)your other applications if you are accepted.
A. Look at the social fit, too.
B. Also look at your finances.
C. Turn to your teachers for advice, too.
D. Do you think you’re competitive academically?
E. Are you sure you can adapt to the new surroundings?
F. ED acceptance rates at some schools can be twice as high as the regular acceptance rates.
G. It means the student has agreed that if he or she is accepted to a school, he or she must attend it.

On the day I was going home and I asked her if she would be my friend. I still didn't get any answer. I left her some magazines and told the staff to give them to the lady. I left the hospital with my husband and newborn son.
On my way home, I received a call from my doctor. She said the lady had got the magazines and wanted to see me. So i went happily back to the hospital with my baby and my husband. On seeing me, she hugged me very tightly. She had tears in her eyes. The hospital was quiet. Not a word passed her lips.
Two years later I heard a conversation on the radio. They were talking about that lady and the magazines and the events in the hospital. Unknown to me, at that time, she spoke for the first time all those years. Her doctor said from that day on, she started to trust others. That broke her silence and she started to again .

Para. 1
Five years later, my son was seriously ill suddenly. I took my son to the same hospital in a hurry and found I left my money at home when I got there. I was so worried that I didn’t know what to do. I hesitated for a few minutes and went to a woman for help. And at the same time,I found the lady who was talking to the patient was so familiar.
Paragraph 2:
When I came up to her, I found it was surely her. She was so amazed at seeing me and she hugged me tightly. With tears in her eyes, she told me something about her story. After that year when I left, she came to realize most persons were kind. She tried to forget the experience in the concentration camp. She was accepted by the hospital as a nurse after three years’ hard work. On hearing this I felt so glad that a small act of kindness made a difference

Text 10
I can still remember my elementary school teachers very well. Sue was my kindergarten teacher, and she was very kind. That year was all about games, songs, and getting along with everyone else. Susan was my first-grade teacher. She was my first “real” teacher. We had real lessons with her. I often got into trouble in her class, but I also learned a lot. In the second grade, I had Rhonda as my teacher, who was beautiful. We all liked her. She was our friend more than our teacher. Laura was my third-grade teacher, and she was humorous! Her class was always full of fun. But my fourth grade teacher changed my life. Her name was Shirley Richardson. She was a six-foot-tall African-American woman. Everyone was scared of her, but she was very smart. I stopped getting into trouble, and I started to take school seriously. By the time I got to Tony’s fifth grade class, I was the top student. Thanks to Ms. Richardson.。
