English has surely become the global language. Whenever

we turn on the news to find out what’s hap pening in East Asia, or

Africa, or anywhere, people are being interviewed(采访)and

telling us about it in English.

If people look at the facts about the amazing reach of the English language, many would be surprised. English is used in over 90 countries as an official or semi-official language. English is the working language of many international institutes(研究所)as well as of most international research scientists. It is also the language that Indian parents and black parents wish their children to learn. It is believed that over one billion people worldwide are now learning English.

One of the most important causes of the spread of English around the world is that Europeans are willing to accept it as their language. English is spreading from northern Europe to the south and is now the second language in countries such as Sweden, Norway, Netherlands and Denmark. If one visits any of them, it would seem that almost everyone there can talk in English.

Recently, a report said that at the beginning of 2001, English was the most widely known foreign language with 43% of Europeans saying they spoke it. The report also said that with over 89% of the population speaking English, Sweden now has the highest percentage of English speakers. What’s more, English is the l anguage rated as most useful to know and over 77% of Europeans who do not speak English as their first language consider it useful.

In most langu ages, a greeting is usually followed by“small talk”. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice day, isn’t it? ”“Terrible weather, isn’t

it? ”But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something which both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion(宗教)or politics so these are not suitable topics for small talk in English. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “A great game, isn’t it? ”At bus stops, people may talk about the transport system(体系): “The bus service is terrible, isn’t it? ”

Greetings and small talk are an important part of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.

5. Which of the following is a good topic for small talk?

A. Politics.

B. Income.

C. Weather.

D. Religion.

6. The passage suggests that when we learn a language, ______ .

A. we should understand the importance of the language

7. When we say “A great game, isn’t it? ” we in fact ______ .

A. ask a question

B. discuss the game

C. greet the other person

D. begin small talk
