Unit 15 We’re trying to save the manatees!

We are trying to save the manatees.
Manatees eat about 100 pounds of food a day.
There used to be a lot of manatees.
In 1972, it was discovered that they were endangered.
Ability goal:
Enable the students to describe animals.

Enable the students to protect animals and environment gladly.
Strategy goal:
To understand the target language by reading pictures.
Culture awareness goal:
The importance of protecting animals and the environment.
Teaching important and difficult points:
1.Master the key words:
manatee,playful,aggressive,gray,spotted,cheetah,chimpanzee,kangaroo,mangro
ve,swamp,habitat,aquatic,feed,underwater,vegetation,weigh,pound,polluted
2. Talk about the animals.
3.Review some different tenses and Passive V oice.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1.Revision and Lead- in
Ask the students to show their work.:
T: In the last unit, we’ve learned to talk about the things that we have done. Now I’ll ask you two questions: 1.Have you ever been to a zoo?2. What kind of animals can you see in it?(list five kinds at least)
Then invite two stutents to present their answers.
Step 2.Presentation
1.Learn the new words.
2.Get Ss to talk about adjectives for describing the animals in 1a by looking at the picture and filling in the chart.Then get one of them to show his or her answer.
Sample answers:
Kangaroos: playful, fast, big
Manatees: gentle, shy, enormous
Cheetahs: spotted, fast, aggressive
Polar bears: aggressive, furry, fat
Elephants: enormous, gray, strong
Chimpanzees: noisy, furry, ugly
Step 3.Listening
1.Listen and circle the words in1a that Victor and Ginny use to describle the animals.Then check the answers.
2.Get the Ss to read the words in 2a then listen and match them with definitions. Listen again and complete the chart. Then check the answers.
Step 4.Oral Practice
1.Ask three Ss to act out the dialogue in 1c.
2.Ask Ss to do the groupwork in 1c.
3. Then get some groups to act out theirs.
Step 5 Grammar reviewing
1.Ask a student to read the sentences in the box in Grammar Focus.
2.Help the students sum up the following patterns.
Step 6. Summary
In this class, we’ve heard two s poken conversations: in the first conversation, we heard about some adjectives for describing animals; in the second, we heard something about manatees.We also review some different tenses and Passive V oice.
Step 7. Homework
