Some formal meals may include appetizers, starters and soup before the main course. A typical main course consists of meat or fish, potatoes or rice, and some vegetables. Dessert is usually served with coffee or tea at the end of the meal. Sometimes a dinner is served as a buffet so that people can choose what they like themselves from a table that is set with a variety of foods.

There are some rules for people at formal meals. Sit up straight at the table. When you are not eating, keep your hands on your lap or resting on the table. Elbows on the table are acceptable only between courses, not while you are eating. Never chew with your mouth open or make loud noises when you eat. If your soup is too hot to eat, let it sit until it cools. If you need something that you cannot reach easily, politely ask someone to pass it to you.
