Unit1Unit 1Text AMany people often turn a blind eye to the “ordinary" things in life. They are not aware of the existence and importance of the sun, water and air. In this text, the writer tells us how important the sun is to all living things on the earth and what would happen if the sun did not reappear the next morning.Great Baee of FireHugh DownsIn an interview following my 1965 voyage across the Pacific in a small sailboat, I was asked what power I had on that boat. "Atomic power," I told the reporter.I wasn't kidding: The boat did have an auxiliary engine and a limited fuel supply; but its main power was its sails. The sails, of course, did nothing unless there was wind, but the wind would not blow if there were not a temperature difference that made cooler air move into the space vacated by the rising warm air.And there would be no warmer air unless something heated it.That something is an atomic furnace 93,000,000 miles away that pours its radiation constantly on the day side of the turning Earth. It heats the air, makes it rise, sucks in other air, makes it blow on the sails and causes the boat to be pushed. So every sailboat is powered by an atomic engine—the sun.You Gotta Love ItAlthough the sun is very large pared to the Earth, it is one of myriad stars in a very large galaxy, which is one of myriad galaxies in a very large universe. But the sun is special to us because it is the closest star; it holds us in its gravitational grip. And its energy, raining down on the home planet, is utterly necessary for the maintenance of all life.I've often thought that among the things humans have elected to worship over historic and prehistoric eras, the sun is the most appropriate visible object. Sun worshippers were not too far off the mark. For life to continue here, the sun must keep on shining. Scientists say that if it died (unlikely in the extreme—it's good for another 5 billion years), in less than two weeks nothing wouldmove on the Earth's surface. Nothing would remain alive. This is easily seen when you think about how it gets cooler after the sun goes down, and is coolest just before it es up the next morning. If it's 80 degrees Fahrenheit at sunset and goes down to 60 just before dawn, the only reason the temperature goes back up is that the sun reappears and starts warming things up again. When Hell Freezes OverSuppose it didn't do that.In two days the temperature would go to 40, and then 20 (all water would start to turn into ice) and the next day zero, and then 20 below and 40 below, and so on.In about 10 more days, when the temperature was close to absolute zero, the gases of the atmosphere (nitrogen and oxygen) would freeze, putting a light snow of solid nitrogen onto the ground, followed by a fine powder of oxygen. The Earth would then have no liquid water, no atmosphere, and no life.Perhaps these facts refute the foolish sage who once said the moon was more important than the sun, because the moon shines at night, when we need the light, while the sun shines inthe daytime when we don't need it!(509 words)New Wordsinterviewn. a meeting in which a person is asked about personal views, activities, etc. 采访,访问voyagen. a journey or travel, esp. by water 航行,航海sailboatn. any boat that is moved by a sail or sails 帆船atomica. of atoms; having to do with atoms 原子的reportern. __kidv. tease playfully; talk in a joking way 开玩笑auxiliarya. 备用的;辅助的enginen. 发动机limiteda. kept within limits; restricted 有限的fueln. anything that can be burned to produce heat or power 燃料vacatevt. make vacant 腾出,空出furnacen. 炉子;熔炉radiationn. the act or process of giving out light, heat, electricity, or other radiant energy 辐射;发热;发光constantlyad. without stopping; again and again 不断地;经常地suckv. draw (liquid)into the mouth; draw into a position 吸,吮;吸入gottav. 大学英语读写教程1课文翻译Unit 1Lesson 1: The EarthThe Earth is our home. It is the third planet from the sun in our solar system. It is the only planet known to have life. The Earth is a beautiful and diverse place, with vast oceans, towering mountains, and lush forests. The Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old. It has a diameter of about 12,742 kilometers and a circumference of around 40,075 kilometers. It is made up of several layers, including the crust, mantle, and core. The Earth rotates on its axis, which takes approximately 24 hours to complete one full rotation. This rotation gives us day and night. The Earth also orbits around the sun, completing one orbit in about 365.25 days, giving us the concept of a year. The Earth is made up of many different ecosystems. These ecosystems support a wide variety of plants, animals, and microorganisms. It is important to protect and preserve these ecosystems to maintain the delicate balance of life on Earth. The Earth's climate is constantly changing. It experiences seasons due to the tilt of its axis. It also undergoes long-term changes, such as global warming, which is primarily caused by human activities. As inhabitants of this planet, we have a responsibility to take care of the Earth. We should reduce our carbon footprint, recycle, conserve water, and protect the natural environment. By doing so, we can ensure a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.。

At the host's optionthe dessert utensils may be brought to the table on the dessert plate. To avoid cutter, the general rule for a any table setting is to include no more than three utensils on either side of the dinner plate at atime. The exception is the oyster (or seafood) fork, which may be placed to the right of the last spoon even when it is the fourth utensil to the right of the plate. The initial table setting for a typical formal dinner should look something like this:Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international mutual aid movement which says its "primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety" founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith (Bill W. and Dr. Bob) in Akron, Ohio.3.1.3 Fast Food with Global MenuDonna O’MearaDo you want fries with that? Just what is “that”? It depends on where you are in the world. Some of the most successful global businesses on the planet are fast food chains. Their key to success is tailoring menus to suit different tastes and cultures.People around the world have very different preferences in food, and their diets are influenced by geography, local customs and religious restrictions. Some cultures avoid certain foods, or they will eat things you wouldn’t. Fast food rest aurants have embraced these differences. For example, McDonald’s may not offer the same menu to Russian customers that it does to Japanese customers, but people in both countries receive a meal packaged in paper printed with the company’s identifiable “M”.Fast food companies conduct extensive research to tailor menus for regional differences. So, in the busy city of Dubai,United Arab Emirates, where people’s diets are influenced by their Muslim beliefs, McDonald’s serves up the McArabia burger. With grilled minced meat combined with onions and Arabian spices, the burger is based on a traditional favorite Muslim dinner. And what do hamburger restaurants serve in countries like Japan, where peopleprefer to eat fish, sushi, and rice? It’s simple: they offer a hot fried shrimp burger with a side order of steamed rice instead of French fries.Burger chains offer local favorites throughout Asia. Korean burgers are pork patties cooked in a traditional Korean barbecue garlic sauce. Taiwanese diners favor spicy chicken drumstick sandwiches, in line with their tastes for spicy food and dark meat. Thailand’s favorite fast food is a spicy pork burger and a green tea pie dessert. Children in Spain order tapas, a lot of small bites of local food favorites, at their local burger restaurant.Australia and New Zealand restaurants reflect local food preferences by adding egg, bacon, beet root, and cheese to burgers. In India, cows are considered sacred and are never killed. Beef and pork are not eaten as this would be a serious offence to Hindu beliefs. Burger sellers faced a huge challenge in designing menus for Indians. A local Indianfavorite is the Chicken McCurry Pan, a blend of tomato sauce, mixed with chicken, baked, and served on spiced bread and topped with cheese.Canadian fast food chains serve something that looks like a traditional Canadian dish consisting of French fries covered in cheese curds and gravy. The favorite in El Salvadoran burger chains, is filled with meat and cheese. Argentineans favor steaksandwiches based on a local herbed sauce.Burger chains in the United States offer local favorites, too. In New Mexico, you can get peppers on your sandwich; breakfast burritos are served throughout the Southwest; and pineapple-topped burgers are offered in Hawaii. Before chain restaurants opened in Russia, dining out was limited and not always a pleasant experience. Waiters were usually rude to many customers. So when more than 125 fast food burger restaurants opened across Russia, a record of 30,000 Russians rushed to theopenings, lined up, and waited for hours to buy hamburgers and French fries, all because they were served happily with a smile and a thank-you. Russian people found this to be a delightful experience and made the Russian fast food hamburger business the fifth largest market in all of Europe. The list of local favorites around the world is endless. One thing is for sure: People like to eat, and fast food restaurants are ready and willing to sell them anything they desire. So, if being a restaurant entrepreneur is your dream, you’d better start planning your global menu now.3.3 Useful Expression1. depend on v.1) All living things depend on the sun for their growth.
