State verbs
State verbs describes thoughts, feelings, senses, possession and description. • Description: appear, contain, look like, mean, resemble, seem, smell, sound, taste, weigh 你看上去像你的母亲。 You look like your mother. (- a permanent situation, not temporary)

Present simple
• conditions –
1. To talk about regular habits or repeated actions:
大多数日子我起得很早,然后练习一个小时左右。
I get up really early and practise for an hour or so most days. 我几乎每天使用互联网。 I use the Internet just about every day.

1. To talk about temporary situations: 我正在为考试而努力学习。 I’m studying really hard for my exams. 目前我的兄弟在泰国居住。 My cousin is living in Thailand at the moment. (=he doesn’t normally live there) Words like at the moment, currently, now, this week/month/year are often used.

State verbs describes thoughts, feelings, senses, possession and description. • feelings: adore, despise, dislike, enjoy, feel, hate, like, love, mind, prefer, want 你介意我问你几个问题吗? Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

Present perfect
• To talk about a time period that is not finished: I’ve written a rough plan this morning. (it is still morning) I’ve written a rough plan.
State verbs
When the meaning of state verbs is temporary, they can be used in continuous form. Compare: • What are you thinking? (now) I think you should tell her the truth. (opinion) • I’m tasting the sauce to see if it needs more salt. (now) The sauce tastes delicious. (state)

2. To talk about permanent situations: 我父母拥有一个饭馆。 My parents own a restaurant. 在美国有50个州。 There are 50 states in the US.

3. To give instructions and directions: 你走向红绿灯,然后你向左转。 You go to the traffic lights, then you turn left. 要开始程序,你一开始要点击桌面的图标。 To start the programme, first you click on the icon on the desktop.

State verbs describes thoughts, feelings, senses, possession and description. • possession: have, own, belong 我父母拥有一个餐馆。 My parents own a restaurant.
These expressions are often used: recently, just, already, and yet with negative or questions.

• To talk about something that happed at an unstated time in the past but is connected to the present: 我已经读了阅读列表上所有的书。 I’ve read all the books on the reading list. (maybe I have notes now)

3. To talk about facts or generally accepted truths: 学生一般没太多钱。 Students don’t generally have much money. 如果你加热水到100摄氏度,它会沸腾。 If you heat water to 100 C, it boils.

3. To tell stories and talk about films, books and plays: 在电影里,这个女人爱上了主角。 In the film, the lady falls in love with the hero.

4. To talk about things that happen more often than expected, often to show envy or to criticise with words like always, constantly, continually, forever. 我母亲总说我帮不上忙! My mum’s always saying I don’t help enough! (complaint) 他总是去令人激动得地方! He’s always visiting exciting places! (envy)

• To talk about a present situation which started in the past, usually with for / since: I’ve worked really hard for the last two weeks.

State verbs describes thoughts, feelings, senses, possession and description. • Thoughts: agree, assume, believe, disagree, forget, hope, know, regret, remember, suppose, think, understand 我认为你还不是太忙了而不能玩电脑游戏。 I assume you are not too busy to play computer games.

• To show that something happened at some point in the past before now. We don’t state when it happened: 我已经收集了很多信息。 I’ve collected plenty of information. These words are often used: ever, never, before, up to now, still, so far

2. To talk about actions happening at the moment of speaking: 我正在等我的朋友。 I’m waiting for my friends.

Nowadays, many people in my country have sent their children to single-sex schools. 4. These days, more and more people travelling to very distant places for their holidays.
