The Roman Legacy in Sansovino’s Venetian Buildings
Ladies and gentlemen, today I would like to share with you an analytic paper entitled “the Roman Legacy in Sansovino’s Venetian Buildings”, written by Wolfgang Lotz and Bibliotheca Hertziana from Rome. As presented in the paper’s second passage, the paper has twofold purposes: one is to characterize the ambience of Sansovino during his early years in Florence and Rome, discovering the structures that Sansovino can be surmised to have been involved; another is to trace certain features of Sansovino’s Venetia n edifices back to his Roman years.
By examining Jacopo Sansovino’s activities as an architect in Venice carefully with the help of document proofs and effective deduction, the paper proves that as Sansovino arrived at Venice, he was already considered as a master in architecture with conspicuous achievement. The paper discovered that the motif of the double engaged columns and the pier with the engaged column appear to be the characteristic features of Jacopo’s Venetian facades, which both are the reminiscence of his Roman years, demonstrating a unique integration of sculpture and architecture in Sansovino’s architecture de signs. In this lecture, I am happy to share with you how above thesis is supported.
First, the paper shows to us that the pattern of facades with double columns was to become a standard feature of Jacopo’s Venetian facades. in this pattern, the facade has two shields for coats of arms, a blank one in the crowning pediment and a smaller one over one of the statues of the main order. The motif of the double columns had been used frequently in Bramante’s projects such as the decoration of the Santa Casa in Loreto. It was recognized that the pattern of Bramante’s Santa Casa appears to be the ultimate source of Jacopo’s facades with double columns.
Subsequently, the paper proves that the pier with the engaged column appears to be as characteristic a feature of Sansovino’s Venetian structure that was clearly derived from Rome. Sansovino was deducted to be familiar with this particular motif during his second sojourn in Rome. He was also assumed that he obtained the drawings of the interior of the church of Santa Maria, which was designed by the architect Sangallo the Younger to utilize this particular piers. In the project for the Library, Sansovino offered to use “Serliana”, representing this particular motif, as a highly original and satisfactory solution for the structural requirement of the Library. This design enables to balance the thrust of the great barrel vault with strengthened outer walls and narrowed windows.
At the end of the paper, the authors discussed on the reasons behind Sansovino’s addiction into the above two architectural features: facades with double columns and piers with engaged column. Besides the structural requirement as explained before, the authors believed that it must be the forceful plasticity, the implied emotions of strength and dignity presented by the two motifs that attracts him to utilize them for projects in Venice. In light of this, one may see Sansovino as the real heir of Bramante and ancient Roman architecture.
Now I would like to wrap up my lecture with a summary of Sansovino’s architectural achievements found by the paper.Already recognized as a master of architecture with conspicuous achievement in his twenties, Sansovino was skillful in the use of two architectural features in his projects for Venetian buildings: facades with double columns and piers with engaged column, which was found to be derived from Rome architecture. It is discovered that Sansovino was very talented in the consonance of beauty, structural adequacy and functional adequacy.
