When I arrived in Hamburg, one of my local colleagues arranged a welcome party for me in a restaurant. As we walked into the restaurant, we noticed that an old couple were having their meal with only two dishes and two cans of drinks on the table.
Thinking that I was hungry, my local colleague ordered much food for me. Later since there were other things to do, we did not spend much time dining. When we planned to leave, there was still about one third of unconsumed food left.
When we were leaving the restaurant, we heard someone calling to us. We stopped and the old lady spoke to us in English. She said she was unhappy about us wasting so much food.
“We paid for our food. It is none of your business how much food we abandoned,”my colleague told the old lady. She got angry, and immediately make a call to someone. After a while, an officer in uniform arrived. Upon knowing what had happened, he issues us with a 50-Mark fine. The officer told us in a stern voice, “Order that you can consume. Money is yours, but resources belong to society. You have no reason to waste them.” Later, my colleague took out a 50-Mark note and apologized to the officer repeatedly.

One possible version:
The author’s local colleague arranged a welcome party and ordered more food than they could consumed. An old lady were unhappy with their wasting food and called the police. As a result, they were fined for wasting social resources.
Having read this story, I agree with what the officer said. But in reality, mankind is wasting things everywhere and every day. Wherever we go, we can see that paper, bottles and cans are thrown away; food is wasted just because of poor waste; clothes are discarded simply due to their old fashion. Not only are things and money wasted, but natural resources are abused as well. Trees are cut down merely for fuel; wild animals are killed simply for meat and fur; oil and coal are exploited in a bad way.
In my opinion, it is time that both the media and the government appeal to the public to stop wasting behaviors and make the most of limited resources.

There has been a reversal of the brain drain since 1978 across the country.
Between 1998 and 2007, about 7, 000 overseas Chinese returned to Shanghai after completing their studies abroad. They accounted for about 25% of all returnees nationwide. They year 2008 has witnessed a boom. The numbe
r of returnees came up to 15, 000. By the end of 2012, a further 32,000 will have returned to this city.
The reversal of the brain drain mainly arises from three facts. Firstly, our government values
overseas Chinese scholars highly, encourages them to return home to start their own careers and has worked out a series of preferential policies. In Shanghai, the famous international city, they can enjoy a modern lifestyle. Secondly, China ’s economy has been developing at a high speed, which provides them with a vast space of development. Many returnees have achieved outstanding success in scientific research or in high-level management. They are playing a more and more important role. Thirdly, the current global financial crisis leaves many overseas out of work or at the edge of being laid off. They feel more secure at home because the economy is more stable.
I hope that more overseas Chinese can head home. There is a bright future ahead of them.

The mouse is a most effective device used by people to communicate with a computer.
For most people, it’s almost impossible to operate a computer without a mouse, let alone surf the Internet. A well-chosen mouse is really handy, flexible and convenient in controlling the screen. With the functions of inserting, deleting, moving and copying, it enables us to edit test, browse web page and download what we want. It can even bring us a flood of music, movies and PC games. Just imagine, all this can be done with a cute mouse.
A convenient too l can certainly make our work easier, but it doesn’t always help in a positive way. Too much ready information on our fingertips leaves little room for knowledge pursuing. Too many ready answers make us less excited in finding truth. Relying too much on mouse clicking makes us lazier and less creative both mentally and physically.

The over exploitation of World Heritage sites has raised public concern. As is shown in the cartoon, the World Heritage sites are overcrowded with large groups of tourists pushing, taking photos, or even spitting, smoking and scribbling everywhere, which has caused great damage to these historic buildings.
One of the contributing factors of this phenomenon is that the local government is pushing too hard for the development of tourism, ignoring damage prevention and educational function of the sites. Moreover, some self-centered tourists are uncivilized in public places, ignorant of the historical and cultural value of the sites.
From my point of view, the original purpose of setting up World Heritage sites is to help preserve history so that people will be able to enjoy them for generations to come. I suggest both the government and the public should be aware that the best form of conservation is the prevention of damage and related protection committees should be established to undertake important educational work..
