When I arrived in Hamburg, one of my local colleagues arranged a welcome party for me in a restaurant. As we walked into the restaurant, we noticed that an old couple were having their meal with only two dishes and two cans of drinks on the table.

Thinking that I was hungry, my local colleague ordered much food for me. Later since there were other things to do, we did not spend much time dining. When we planned to leave, there was still about one third of unconsumed food left.

When we were leaving the restaurant, we heard someone calling to us. We stopped and the old lady spoke to us in English. She said she was unhappy about us wasting so much food.

“We paid for our food. It is none of your business how much food we abandoned,”my colleague told the old lady. She got angry, and immediately make a call to someone. After a while, an officer in uniform arrived. Upon knowing what had happened, he issues us with a 50-Mark fine. The officer told us in a stern voice, “Order that you can consume. Money is yours, but resources belong to society. You have no reason to waste them.” Later, my colleague took out a 50-Mark note and apologized to the officer repeatedly.

One possible version:

The author’s local colleague arranged a welcome party and ordered more food than they could consumed. An old lady were unhappy with their wasting food and called the police. As a result, they were fined for wasting social resources.

Having read this story, I agree with what the officer said. But in reality, mankind is wasting things everywhere and every day. Wherever we go, we can see that paper, bottles and cans are thrown away; food is wasted just because of poor waste; clothes are discarded simply due to their old fashion. Not only are things and money wasted, but natural resources are abused as well. Trees are cut down merely for fuel; wild animals are killed simply for meat and fur; oil and coal are exploited in a bad way.

In my opinion, it is time that both the media and the government appeal to the public to stop wasting behaviors and make the most of limited resources.
