And the word …television‟ means seeing far.Television works in much the same way as radio. In radio, sound is changed into electromagnetic waves which are sent through the air. Experiments leading to moderntelevision took place more than a hundred years ago. By the 1920s inventors and researchers had turned, the early theories into working models. Yet it took another thirty years for TV to become industry. The influence of TV on the life of the people is incalculable; it can influence their thoughts and their way of life. It can also add to their store of knowledge. Educational TV stations offer teaching in various subjects. Some hospitals use TV for medical students to get close-up views of operations. At first television programs were broadcast in black-and-white. With the development of science and technology, the problem of how to telecast them in full color was solved and by the middle 1960s the national networks were broadcasting most of their programs in color. The programs that people watch are not only local and national ones. Since the launching of the first communications satellite, more and more programs are telecast …live‟from all over the world. People in San Francisco were able to watch the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. And live telecasts now come from outer space. In 1969, the first astronauts to land on the moon televised their historic …moon walk‟ to viewers on the earth. Since then, astronauts have regularly sent telecast to the earth.26.The launching of communications satellites made it possible for people in SanFrancisco to ______.A. get close-up views of operationsB. store knowledgeC. watch the 1964 Olympic Games in TokyoD. watch national programs27. C 43. A 44. A 45. CIn ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates(考生)for the doctor‟s degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an objective(客观)test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.31. In the Middle Ages students ______.A. took objective testsB. were timed by electric clocksC. specialized in one subjectD. never wrote exams32. The main idea of paragraph 3 is that ______.A. workers now take examinationsB. the population has grownC. there are only written exams todayD. examinations are now written and timed33. Modern industry must have developed ______.A. before the Middle AgesB. in Greece or RomeC. around the 19th centuryD. machines to take tests35. It may be concluded that testing ______.A. should test only opinionsB. has changed since the Middle AgesC. should always be writtenD. is given only in factoriesPassage 3 (艺术类~~易)Singing had always been an important part of Gloria Estefan‟s life. “Since I was three years old, I sang everything,” Gloria said. “Cubans,” she added, “are a musical people.”Gloria was born in Cuba in 1957. It was the beginning of the Miami Sound Machine.Within a few months, the Miami Sound Machine was the top band in Miami. In 1978, Gloria and Emilio married. At first, the Miami Sound Machine was known only in Miami. Then the band signed with CBS(哥伦比亚广播公司)Records. Estefan and her band became stars.Since then, the Miami Sound Machine has sold millions of albums. Estefan has done more than just singing when Hurricane Andrew devastated central Florida in 1992. She used only two weeks to organize an all-star concert that raised $2 million for the hurricane‟s victims. “We needed a party after that disaster,” she said.Estefan said, “You have to stay true to the music you really love to do. Whatever the limitations of ballet in the Soviet Union, it is no wonder that Russian ballet dancers perform with ease leaps and lifts seldom attempted elsewhere, and that the standard of dancing in a Russian corps de ballet is far above that usually seen in other countries —nine years of ballet discipline is almost unheard of outside Russia. The period devoted to dance classes increases gradually from two or three hours a day to five or six. As in other institutions of higher learning, ballet students receive monthly government stipends(津贴)in their last four years, varying from 160 to 200 rubles ($16 to $20). Of the thirty pupils to begin ballet each year, fewer than twenty-five usually graduate; the others drop out because of poor health or lack of ability.Upon graduation, the starting salary for members of a corps de ballet is 100 rubles a month, while prima ballerinas receive 6,000. Russia‟s most famous ballet company, the Bolshoi, has first pick of each graduating class, but few dancers have the good fortune to begin with this company; all graduates, however, are assured of jobs in ballet.Stars such as Ulannova were produced in this fashion, with training started early and security , if not intellectual independence, guaranteed.41.Ballet training in Russia begins when a child ______.A. begins schoolB. is in the primary gradesC. finishes his academic workD. can walk42. Both A and B26-30答案:DBCBDQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: (中)Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of thesubstances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.31. Pruning should be done to _____.A. make the tree grow tallerB. improve the shape of the treeC. get rid of the small branchesD. make the small branches thicker32. Trees become unhealthy if the gardener _____.A .allows too many branches to grow in the middleB. .does not protect them from windC. .forces them to grow too quicklyD. .damages some of the small side branches33. Why is a special substance painted on the tree?A. To make a wound smoothB. To prevent disease entering a woundC. To cover a rough surfaceD. To help a wound to dry34. A good gardener prunes a tree_____.A .at intervals throughout the yearB .as quickly as possibleC .occasionally when necessaryD .regular every winter35. What was the author's purpose when writing this passage?A. To give practical instruction for pruning a tree.B. To give a general description of pruningC. To explain how trees develop diseasesD. To discuss different methods of pruning.31-35答案:BABCAQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage: (较难)Water problems in the future will become more intense and more complex. Our increasing population will tremendously increase urban wastes, primarily sewage. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decease substantially the amount of water available for diluting wastes. Rapidly expanding industries which involve more and more complex chemical processes will produce large volumes of liquid wastes, and many of these will contain chemicals which are noxious. To feed our rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will involve ever-increasing quantities of agricultural chemicals. From this, it is apparent that drastic steps must be taken immediately to develop corrective measures for the pollution problem. There are two ways by which this pollution problem can be dwindled. The first relates to the treatment of wastes to decrease their pollution hazard. This involves the processing of solid wastes "prior to" disposal and the treatment of liquid wastes, or effluents, to permit the reuse of the water or minimize pollution upon final disposal.A second approach is to develop an economic use for all or a part of the wastes. Farm manure is spread in fields as a nutrient or organic supplement. Effluents from sewage disposal plants are used in some areas both for irrigation and for the nutrients contained. Effluents from other processing plants may also be used as a supplemental source of water. Many industries, such as meat and poultry processing plants, are currently converting former waste products into marketable byproducts. Other industries are potential economic uses for waste products.36. The purpose of this passage is _____.A. .to alert the reader to the dwindling water supplyB. .to explain industrial uses of waterC. to acquaint the reader with water pollution problemsD. to demonstrate various measures to solve the pollution problem37. Which of the following points is NOT INCLUDED in the passage?A. Industrial development includes the simplification of complex chemical processes.B. Diluting wastes needs certain amount of waterC. Demands for water will go up along with the expanding populationD. Intensive cultivation of land requires more and more chemicals38. The reader can conclude that_____A. countries of the world will work together on pollution problemsB. byproducts from wastes lead to a more prosperous marketplaceC. science is making great progress on increasing water suppliesD. some industries are now taking economic use of wastes39. The author gives substance to the passage through the use of_____.A. interviews with authorities in the field of water controlsB. opinions and personal observationsC. definitions which clarify important termsD. strong arguments and persuasions40. The words "prior to "(para.1) probably mean_____.A after B. during C. before D. beyond36-40答案:CA DBCQuestions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage: (中)Traveling through the country a couple of weeks ago on business, I was listening to the talk of the late UK writer Douglas Adams’ master work “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” on the radio and thought---I know, I’ll pick up the next hitchhikers I see and ask them what the state of real hitching is today in Britain.I drove and drove on main roads and side roads for the next few days and never saw a single one. When I was in my teens and 20s, hitchhiking was a main form of long-distance transport. The kindness or curiosity of strangers took me all over Europe, North America, Asia and southern Africa. Some of the lift-givers became friends, many provided hospitality on the road. Not only did you find out much more about a country than when traveling by train or plane, but there was that element of excitement about where you would finish up that night.Hitchhiking featured importantly in Western culture. It has books and songs about it .So what has happened to it?A few years ago, I was asked the same question about hitching in a column of a newspaper. Hundreds of people from all over the world responded with their view on the state of hitchhiking.Rural Ireland was recommended as a friendly place for hitching, as was Quebec, Canada-“if you don’t mind being criticized for not speaking French”.But while hitchhiking was clearly still alive and well in some places, the general feeling was that throughout much of the west it was doomed. With so much news about crime in the media, people assumed that anyone on the open road without the money for even a bus ticket must present a danger. But do we need to be so wary both to hitch and to give a lift?In Poland in the 1960s, according to a Polish woman who e-mail me ,"the authorities introduced the Hitchhiker’s Booklet. The booklet contained coupons for drivers, so each time a driver picked somebody, he or she received a coupon. At the end of the season, drivers who had picked up the most hiker s were rewarded with various prizes. Everyone was hitchhiking then”.Surely this is a good idea for society. Hitchhiking would increase respect by breaking down barriers between strangers. It would help fight global warming by cutting down on fuel consumption as hitchhikers would be using existing fuels. It would also improve educational standards by delivering instant lessons in geography, history, politics and sociology.A century before Douglas Adams wrote his “Hitchhiker’s Guide”, another adventure stor y writer, Robert Louis Stevenson, gave us that what should be the hitchhiker’s motto: “To travelhopefully is a better thing than to arrive.” What better time than putting a holiday weekend into practice. Either put it to the test yourself, or help out someone who is trying to travel hopefully with thumb outstretched.41. In which paragraph(s) does the writer comment on his experience of hitchhiking? ________A. (3)B. (4)C. (3) and (4)D. (4) and (5)42. What is the current situation of hitchhiking? _______A. Actually, most people experience nervousness at some time or another. If you are feeling anxious, my advice is to first find the cause or causes. Make a list of those things that are making you nervous and work out which ones you can do something about. Focus all of your efforts on managing the causes that you can control. Most people cannot tell the difference between controllable (可控制的) and uncontrollable causes, so things they can’t control become a big reason for nervousness. Dealing with this is very important if people want to keep a healthy mind.Simply try to accept the uncontrollable causes of nervousness. You might be worried about the weather on a big day, an accident or an attack on the train, or perhaps just things that other people are doing at work. The results may be very important but there is still no use worrying because you can’t control any of these things. Accept that you can’t control everything. Once you understand this, it becomes easier not to worry. If a situation, such as swimming, is causing you to be anxious, try to face it as often as possibly so that you can get used to it.It can often help to think about yourself doing the thing that makes you nervous--- then close your eyes and imagine it going well. Imagine how the flight or job interview is going to happen so that you can get used to it. This will help you understand that the thing you fear most is probably not going to happen.41. Yet economic 27 show the world is prospering. Despite a slow start at the beginning of the eighties, 28 economic output increased by more than a fifth during the decade. The economy grew, trade increased, and millions of new jobs were created. How can biological indicators show the opposite of economic indicators? The answer is that the economic indicators have a basic 29 : they show no difference between resource uses that sustain progress and those uses that will hurt it. The main30 of economic progress is the gross national product (GNP). In simple terms, this totals the value of all goods and services produced and subtracts loss in value of factories and equipment. Developed a half-century ago, GNP helped establish a common way among countries of measuring change in economic 31 . For some time, this seemed to work reasonably well, but serious weaknesses are now appearing. As indicated earlier, GNP includes loss32 factories and equipment, but it does not take into account the loss of natural resources, including 33 such as oil or renewable resources such as forests. This basic fault can produce a misleading sense of national economic health. According to GNP, for example, countries that 34 forests actually do better than those that 35 their forests. The trees cut down are counted as income but no subtraction is made for using up the forests.Part III Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: In this section, there are ten sentences with ten blanks. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write your answer on Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage. If you think a high-factor sunscreen (防晒霜) keeps you safe from harmful rays, you may be wrong. Research in this week’s Nature shows that while factor 50 reduces the number of melanomas (黑瘤) and delays their occurrence, it can’t prevent them. Melanomas are the most aggressive skin cancers. You have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair, fair skin, blue or green eyes, or sunburn easily, or if a close relative has had one. Melanomas are more common if you have periodic intense exposure to the sun. Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long-term exposure. There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas—the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer. A 2011 A us tralian study of 1,621 people found that people randomly selected to apply sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who us ed cream as needed. A second study, comparing 1,167 people with melanomas to 1,101 who didn’t have the cancer, found that us ing sunscreen routinely, alongside other protection such as hats, long sleeves or staying in the shade, did give some protection. This study said other forms of sun protection—not sunscreen—seemed most beneficial. The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives, so it’s not entirely reliable. But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun. Many people also don’t use sunscreen properly—applying insufficient amounts, failing to reapply after a couple of hours and staying in the sun too long. It is sunburn that is most worrying—recent research shows five episodes of sunburn in the teenage years increases the risk of all skin cancers. The good news is that a combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanoma rates, as shown by Australian figures from their slip-slop-slap campaign. So if there is a heat wave this summer, it would be best for us, too, to slip on a shirt, slop on (抹上) sunscreen and slap on a hat.46. What is people’s common expectation of a high-factor sunscreen?A. It will delay the occurrence of skin cancer.B. It will protect them from sunburn.C. It will keep their skin smooth and fair.D. It will work for people of any skin color.47. What does the research in Nature say about a high-factor sunscreen?A. It is ineffective in preventing melanomas.B. It is ineffective in case of intense sunlight.C. It is ineffective with long-term exposure.D. It is ineffective for people with fair skin.48. What do we learn from the 2011 Australian study of 1,621 people?A. Sunscreen should be applied alongside other protection measures.B. High-risk people benefit the most from the application of sunscreen.C. Irregular application of sunscreen does women more harm than good.D. Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the incidence of melanomas.49. What does the author say about the second Australian study?A. It misleads people to rely on sunscreen for protection.B. It helps people to select the most effective sunscreen.C. It is not based on direct observation of the subjects.D. It confirms the results of the first Australian study.50. What does the author suggest to reduce melanoma rates?A. Using both covering up and sunscreen.B. Staying in the shade whenever possible.C. Using covering up instead of sunscreen.D. Applying the right amount of sunscreen.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form of distance leaning (DL), and among the larger schools, it’s closer to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven’t heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction. It enrolls 90,000 students, a statistic used to support its claim to be the largest private university in the country. While the kinds of instruction offered in these programs will differ, DL usually signifies a course in which the instructors post syllabi(课程大纲), reading assignments, and schedules on Websites, and students send in their assignments by e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face communication with an instructor is minimized or eliminated altogether. The attraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primarily, there’s the convenience promised by courses on the Net: you can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas (睡衣). But figures indicate that the reduced effort results in a reduced commitment to the course. While dropout rates for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the rate for online students is 35 percent. Students themselves seem to understand the weaknesses inherent in the setup. In a survey conducted for eCornell, the DL division of Cornell University, less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of the online course to be as good as the classroom course.Clearly, from the schools’ perspective, there’s a lot of money to be saved. Although some of the more ambitious programs require new investments in servers and networks to support collaborative software, most DL courses can run on existing or minimally upgraded (升级) systems. The more students who enroll in a course but don’t come to campus, the more the school saves on keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers, and maintaining parking lots. And, while there’s evidence that instructors must work harder to run a DL course for a variety of reasons, they won’t be paid any more, and might well be paid less.51. What is the most striking feature of the University of Phoenix?A. It boasts the largest number of students on campus.B. All its courses are offered online.C. Its online courses are of the best quality.D. Anyone taking its online courses is sure to get a degree.52. According to the passage, distance learning is basically characterized by ______.A. a minimum or total absence of face-to-face instructionB. a considerable flexibility in its academic requirementsC. the great diversity of students’ academic backgroundsD. the casual relationship between students and professors53. Many students take Internet-based courses mainly because they can ______.A. save a great deal on traveling and boarding expensesB. select courses from various colleges and universitiesC. work on the required courses whenever and whereverD. earn their academic degrees with much less effort54. What accounts for the high drop-out rates for online students?A. There is no mechanism to ensure that they make the required effort.B. There is no strict control over the academic standards of the courses.C. The evaluation system used by online universities is inherently weak.D. Lack of classroom interaction reduces the effectiveness of instruction.55. According to the passage, universities show great enthusiasm for DL programs for the purposeof ______.A. building up their reputationB. upgrading their teaching facilitiesC. providing convenience for studentsD. cutting down on their expensesPart IV TranslationSection A (5 points, one point for each)Directions: Complete the sentences by translating into English the Chinese given in brackets. The development of science and technology made it possible for television programsto ______.A. be telecast in full colorB. be telecast in San FranciscoC. be telecast in TokyoD. be telecast in black-and-white28. The word …incalculable‟ means ______.A. easy to tellB. very greatC. difficult to tellD. very small29. Television is said to be the modern wonder of electronics, because ______.A. it influences people‟s way of lifeB. it makes people see farC. it brings the world into people‟s own home in sight and soundD. it works as radio30. The television became an industry in ______.A. 1950B. the 1960sC. the 1920sD. the 1950sPassage 2 (中)26. C 27. A 28. B 29. C 30. D31. D 32. D 33. C 34. C 35. B36. C 37. B 38. D 39. C 40. B41. B 42. C 43. A 44. Russia‟s most famous ballet company, the Bolshoi, has first pick of each graduating class, but few dancers have the good fortune to begin with this company; all graduates, however, are assured of jobs in ballet.Stars such as Ulannova were produced in this fashion, with training started early and security , if not intellectual independence, guaranteed.41.Ballet training in Russia begins when a child ______.A. begins schoolB. is in the primary gradesC. finishes his academic workD. can walk42.
