Thankyou.Thankyou,PresidentChen,ChairmenRen,VicePresi dentChi,ViceMinisterWei.Wearedelightedtobeheretodaywi thaverylargeAmericandelegation,includingtheFirstLadya ndourdaughter,whoisastudentatStanford,oneoftheschools withwhichBeijingUniversityhasarelationship.Wehavesixm embersoftheUnitedStatesCongress;theSecretaryofState;S ecretaryofCommerce;theSecretaryofAgriculture;theChair manofourCouncilofEconomicAdvisors;SenatorSasser,ourAm bassador;theNationalSecurityAdvisorandmyChiefofStaff, amongothers.IsaythattoillustratetheimportancethattheU nitedStatesplacesonourrelationshipwithChina. Iwouldliketobeginbycongratulatingallofyou,thestudents ,thefaculty,theadministrators,oncelebratingthecentenn ialyearofyouruniversity.Gongxi,Beida.(Applause.) AsI’msureallofyouknow,thiscampuswasoncehometoYenchin gUniversitywhichwasfoundedbyAmericanmissionaries.Many ofitswonderfulbuildingsweredesignedbyanAmericanarchit ect.ThousandsofAmericansstudentsandprofessorshavecome heretostudyandteach.Wefeelaspecialkinshipwithyou. Iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimport antrespectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.InJu neof1919,thefirstpresidentofYenchingUniversity,JohnLe ightonStuart,wassettodelivertheveryfirstcommencementa ddressontheseverygrounds.Attheappointedhour,heappeare d,butnostudentsappeared.TheywerealloutleadingtheMay4t hMovementforChina’spoliticalandculturalrenewal.WhenI readthis,IhopedthatwhenIwalkedintotheauditoriumtoday,

someonewouldbesittinghere.AndIthankyouforbeinghere,ve rymuch.(Applause.)

Overthelast100years,thisuniversityhasgrowntomorethan2 0,000students.YourgraduatesarespreadthroughoutChinaan daroundtheworld.Youhavebuiltthelargestuniversitylibra styear,20percentofyourgraduateswentab roadtostudy,includinghalfofyourmathandsciencemajors.A ndinthisanniversaryyear,morethanamillionpeopleinChina ,Asia,andbeyondhaveloggedontoyourwebsite.Atthedawnofa newcentury,thisuniversityisleadingChinaintothefuture. Icomeheretodaytotalktoyou,thenextgenerationofChina’s leaders,aboutthecriticalimportancetoyourfutureofbuild ingastrongpartnershipbetweenChinaandtheUnitedStates. TheAmericanpeopledeeplyadmireChinaforitsthousandsofye arsofcontributionstocultureandreligion,tophilosophyan dthearts,toscienceandtechnology.Werememberwellourstro ngpartnershipinWorldWarII.NowweseeChinaatamomentinhis torywhenyourgloriouspastismatchedbyyourpresentsweepin gtransformationandtheevengreaterpromiseofyourfuture. Justthreedecadesago,Chinawasvirtuallyshutofffromthewo rld.Now,Chinaisamemberofmorethan1,000internationalorg anizations--enterprisesthataffecteverythingfromairtraveltoagricul turaldevelopment.Youhaveopenedyournationtotradeandinv estmentonalargescale.Today,40,000youngChinesestudyint heUnitedStates,withhundredsofthousandsmorelearninginA sia,Africa,Europe,andLatinAmerica.
