The painting shows a man standing beside a woman .The figures were modeled by the artist’s dentist and sister. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron(围裙) mimicking(模仿) 19th century American and the couple are in the traditional roles of men and women, the man’s pitchfork symbolizing hard labor, and the flowers over the woman‘s right shoulder suggesting domesticity(家庭生 活,顾家).

Grant Wood is a painter of the U.S. (1892-1942) Wood was born in Anamosa, Iowa. He was in Minneapolis to learn arts and crafts, by doing odd jobs to feed himselves. 1919-1924, he taught Julian in Paris. 1934, he became a professor in the Department of Fine Arts, until his death.
