透过美国英语词汇这面美国文化的折射镜,我们可以领悟美国所特有的文化风貌。

”(1921:223)文化和语言的关系可以理解为内容和形式的关系。
内容决定形式,形式反映内容。
美国英语作为美国文化信息的载体和美国文化主客观的表现形式,深深地烙上了美国社会所独有的文化印记。
透过美国英语这面美国文化的内透镜,我们可窥探到美国所特有的文化内容。
一 美利坚的历史自从有了文字以来,词汇一直是人们记载历史事件和传播人类智慧的有效工具。
因而,在词汇的字里行间里无不弥留着人类发展、进步的遗迹和人类社会活动的深刻烙印。
美国英语作为美国历史文化的载体记录下了美国在近四百年的历史中所发生的迅疾变迁。
美国的历史,一般都是从英国在北美建立殖民地开始。
Plantation 是与早期殖民地有关的一个词语。
英殖民者统治期间,plantation 并不是现在所称之为的“种植园”。
英国殖民者1607年在北美建立的第一块殖民地Jamestown ,当时被称为plantation 。
Plantation 一词旧时的英文意思是:a newly estab-lished settlement or colony (殖民地)。

美国英语中的文化语海拾趣：Asleep At The SwitchAsleep At The Switch疏忽，失职，错失良机这条短语形成的时间不长，但表达的含义却比较丰富。
它最初可能出现于美国，因为英国人所编著的工具书都没有把它收录在内，而在《韦伯斯特国际大词典》及《美国成语词典》都可以查到。
该词中的"switch"指的是“铁路的道岔”，它并不是指睡在铁路的道岔上要自杀哦，而是指“疏忽，失职，漫不经心，错失良机”。
美国在经历了南北战争之后经济得到了快速的发展。
在当时所有的资本主义国家中，美国的铁路发展得最快。
不过当时的铁路全部是由人工控制的，搬道岔可说是一项十分重要的工作。
向各方向运行的火车全凭道岔工的操作才能驶入规定的轨道，一旦由于道岔工的疏忽、忘记或者搬错了道岔，便会发生火车出轨的严重事故。
所以，“asleep at the switch”就是一件很严重的事情了。
例：Don't fall asleep at the switch when the job is offered to you.当你有机会得到这一工作时，千万不要掉以轻心。

美国的俚语是指在美国非常广泛使用的、约定俗成的口头语。
俚语多是口头使用，有时还带贬义，不能跟当事人当面说，一般只能背后说。
例如，警察的正规说法是police，但俚语是cop。
Cop这个词带有轻蔑之意，只能大家平时私下讲，不能当面对着一个美国警察这么说。
二、俚语的起源和发展产生俚语的原因很多，如社会阶层、文化背景、人种差异、地域间隔，都可产生属于某一圈内人士所讲的“行话”，也就是所谓的俚语。
俚语的起源还不清楚，初见于1800年的印刷品，所载为伦敦罪犯们的行话。
最初的美国俚语是吸毒者、流浪汉、黑人等下层人士使用的暗语或行话。
现今俚语的主流已经不只局限于这些亚文化群，已发展为主宰美国当今文化主流的上层人士创造的俚语。
那些曾经被定义为“难登大雅之堂”的美国俚语已频频出现在美剧、名报、名著、电视、网络中，甚至是美国总统的正式演说中。
美剧Desperate Housewives《绝望的主妇》剧情贴近生活，其中口语也生动活泼，剧中用了很多很实用的流行美式俚语。

一、引言美国的移民历史决定了美国的多元文化；美国的政治、经济与社会体系的独特结构与全球地位又导致了美国文化对世界的极强影响；在美式英语中充斥的方言与俚语使得美式英语游离于原本的英语作为美国独特的民族语言。
总的来说，美式英语语言文化的特点主要体现了在独特的个人价值观以及精神文明的活泼性、创新性；印第安文化的文化基础这三方面上。
二、独特的世界观、价值观与精神文明的活泼性、创新性1.世界观、价值观的体现。
美国人受到本土文化影响而基本都有一个世界观、价值观共性，也就是突出个人核心价值、追求自由平等的个人主义。
最能体现这种独特强调个性的思想基础的是self一系列由美国人创新的词汇体系。
比如self-control、self-conquest等“自我”系列词汇。
美国人在语言中强调动作主体，比如“The rain is raining”这句话就强调了雨的动作主体，但这些都没有他们对self系列词汇的应用频繁。
可以说个性观念是深入他们思维观念之中的。
2.精神文明的活泼性、创新性。
美式英语语言文化所体现的美国公民精神文明的活泼性与创新性主要体现在对俚语的使用和美音相较于英音的爆破感与夸张感上。
（1）对俚语的使用。
俚语是“民间非正式、较口语的语句”，美国在英式英语基础之上扩充的俚语地域性较强，是美国文化的很好体现，即通俗化。

3.美国英语与个人价值观念美国文化的主要内容是强调个人价值、追求民主自由、崇尚开拓和竞争、讲求理性和实用，其核心是个人中心主义：个人至上、追求个人利益和个人享受，强调通过个人奋斗、个人自我设计，追求个人价值的最终实现。
“self-centeredness(自我为中心)”是美国文化的关键。
因此在美国英语中有许多与“self(自己)，me(我)，individual(个人的)、ego(自我)”相关的词语。
如：self-serving(利己的)、self-advantage (自我利益)、self-centered(自我中心的)、self-image(自我形象)、self-made(靠自己的努力而成功的)、self-actualization/fufilment(自我实现)、ego centric(个人主义的)、ego-ideal(自我理想化)、egotism(自我主义)等等。
美国人的这种“self(自我)”思想根深蒂固，人们很少怀疑这一点。
由于美国文化的自我中心性，大部分人确信以下的生活：“Everybody for himself; the devil the hind most(人不为已灭诛地灭)；Near is my shirt, but nearer is my skin(自己的利益最切身)；Every man for himself and god for us all(个人为自己，上帝为大家)；Every man is the architect of his own fortune(每个人都是自己命运的建筑师)；Help yourself and gold wile help you / God helps those who help themselves(天助自助者)；Self is our center(自我是我们的核心)。
