There’re a lot of stories about the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Historians said it originated from the ancient imperial worship activities. As early as the spring and autumn period, emperors began offering moon. Later the noble officials and scholars also followed suit, gradually spread to folk.
The myth of Chang-e is also related to the MidAutumn Festival. However, it is very diffident from the one we are familiar with. It is said that Chang-e was Houyi’s wife. Queen Mother of the West gave Houyi an elixir of eternal life after he shot down nine suns, but Houyi was not willing to eat and gave it to Chang-e. Houyi’s follower whose name was Pengmeng coveted the elixir and forced Chang-e to give out it. Chang-e then swallowed the elixir and flied to the sky. That day was just August 15th , when the moon is big and bright. Chang-e didn’t want to be too far from Houyi, so she parked on the moon, which is earth's nearest neighbor.
Houyi was inconsolable after returning home. He was so desperately expecting to see his wife again that a fairy told him to make small round cakes and to call the name of Chang-e at the night of August 15th . Houyi complied this way and saw Chang-e flying from the moon. This kind of small round cakes was called moon cakes after that.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional culture festival which is popular both in China and in many East Asian countries. It is called the Mid-autumn Festival because the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month is just at the middle of autumn.
The Mid-autumn Festival began in the early years of the Tang dynasty, flourished in Song dynasty, and to the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is as famous as New Year's day.
