根据下列短文内容回答问题。

在每题下面的4个选项中选出正确选项,并在答题卡的对应字母上涂黑
Passage A
Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young man are still in existence. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading English literature.
At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact his formal education was surprisingly short for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian gentlemen of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American presidents such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress(国会), or on any subject that had nothing to do with everyday, practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams, he never reached Europe.
56. What reason does the author give for Washington not going to college?
A.His family could not afford it.
B. A college education was rather uncommon in his time.
C.He didn’t like the young Virginian gentlemen who went to college.
D.The author doesn’t give any reason.

B.Washington should have gone to France even though he could not speak French
C.Washington was not as good a president as Adams, Jefferson or Madison
D.Washington was a model for all Virginian gentlemen
59. The main idea of the passage is that Washington’s education __________.
A.was of great variety, covering many subjects
B.was probably equal to those of most young gentlemen of his time
C.seemed poor by modern standards, but was good enough for his time
D.was rather limited for a president.
Passage B
In the United States, boys and girls start school when they are five years old. In some states they must stay in school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen or eighteen years old when they graduate from secondary school. Another name for secondary school is high school.
Most children go to public elementary(初级的) and secondary schools. The parents of public school pupils do not have to pay directly for their children’s education because tax money supports the public schools. If a child attends a private school, his parents pay the school for the child’s education.
Today about half of the high school graduates go on to colleges and universities. Some colleges and universities receive tax money from the government. A student at a state university does not have to pay very much if his parents live in that state. Private colleges and universities are expensive, however. Almost half of the college students in the United States work while they are studying . When a student’s family is not rich, he has to earn money for part of his college expenses.

Passage C
Doctors have studied sleep for many years. It is said that a lot happens when people sleep.
It is reported that people have five stages of sleep and it is estimated that people may go through each stage about every 90 minutes.
During the first two stages, you sleep lightly. That is, if someone calls you or puts his hands on you , you wake up quickly. Your body rests quietly. Your heart beats slowly. You breathe more slowly than when you are awake.
During stages three and four , you sleep deeply . You don’t wake up easily. You don’t hear sounds. Lights don’t wake you up. Your heart beats more slowly than in stages one and two. The last stage of sleep is called Rapid Eye Movement. During REM sleep, you breathe faster, and your heart beats faster than in stage one through four. Your eyes move under your eyelids. All of this happens because you are dreaming. What doctors have proved is that everyone dreams.
Some people worry a lot about sleep. What they often do is to take sleeping pills before going to bed. But it has become clear that this is a bad habit. After you use these drugs for about 14 days, they don’t help you any more. Some sleeping pills will prevent you from going into sleep stage four; others will keep you from going into REM sleep. So you don’t get a good night’s sleep with sleeping pills.
What can you do to help yourself sleep? One way is to drink a glass of warm milk. Don’t drink tea, coffee or alcohol. Don’t eat a lot of food before bedtime. Don’t lie in bed and worry about your problems.

Basketball is a sport enjoyed by millions of fans in at least 100 countries. It’s one of the best-known sports in the world. It all began in 1891.

Psychology is the study of the mind and mental activities. For example, psychologists are interested in why some things make you sad, but others make you happy. They want to know why some people are shy, but others are quite talkative. They also want to know why people do the things that they do. They test intelligence.
Psychologists deal with the minds and behavior of people. Your mind consists of all your feelings , thoughts, and ideas. It is the result of one part of the brain called the cerebrum (大脑) . Your behavior is the way you act or conduct yourself .Examples of behavior include shouting, crying, laughing and sleeping.
Several people have been doing research in the field of psychology. Wilhelm Wudt set up the first psychological laboratory in Leipzig, Germany, in 1879. Ivan Pavlov, a Russian, is noted for his experiments with dogs in which he studied their reflexes and reactions.
