How do you feel when you are fooled by others? No doubt, feel bad. There is nothing worse than falling for a joke and being a fool except one day. Y es, that’s April Fool’s Day. Nob ody will be angry to be an "April Fool".66 The headmaster at my school decided to play an April Fools’ joke on the students when I was in high school. On March 31, she announced that our school would hold a "Dress to Impress" day. 67
Girls were told to wear formal dresses and smart jackets, while a suit jacket and tie for each boy would be best. The teachers, we were told, would do the same.
On April Fool’s Day, many of us students came to school dressed in our best clothes.68 In the morning, all of us got together on the playground, waiting for the headmaster. She would speak to the students. 69 Instead, she wore jeans, running shoes and a T-shirt. The teachers also got dressed casually like her.
"April Fools!"she said, with a big smile on her face. "We just wanted to remind you that teachers have a sense of humor, too!"
Surely, all the teachers weren’t April Fools.70

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: 49 Here, we look at two examples
A recent study by researcher Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearin g ability. 50 The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
51 Think about violinists in an orchestra(管弦乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and pay no attention to the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to focus on certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. 52
Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, inc luding the damaged(损坏的) parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.
Music improves concentration(注意力), memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. 53 Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏锐的) as we get older. Music is not only enjoyable, it’s also good for us in many other ways.
A. It can even help sick people get better.
B Music helps people solve some hearing problems.
C. Music improves certain language abilities in the brain.
D. The violinists develop their memories by playing the violin.
E. Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.
F. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak.
G. In his study two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room.

Have you ever counted the number of digits(数字) in your mobile phone number? Your number has 11 digits. You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. 46 Why is that?
The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. 47 The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation and 188 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you which area the number is recorded in. And the last four digits are random(随机的).
48 We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999.
Eleven digits can be used to make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers, according to the Xinhua News Agency. That’s enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China.49 Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven’t contacted(联络) for a long time, you may find that its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with 0. 50 Countries like the United States, Australia an d India use phone numbers with l0 digits. Canada’s mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world’s shortest: they use seven digits.
A. Each part has a different meaning.
B. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can.
C. That’s because China has the longe st mobile phone numbers in the world.
D. Also, mobile phone numbers can be recycled.
E. The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world.

Once, when the food we ordered at a restaurant arrived, the first thing we wanted to do was to eat right away. 37 Others want to take at least five photos of their food to share on social media, such as Wechat.
38 "Foodtography"has been around for longer than one would expect. Take US photographer Irving Penn (1917-2009) for example. In 1947, Vogue magazine published many food photos taken by Penn. Looking at the carefully put salad ingredients or the cakes on stands(货架), it would be easy to think Penn’s 70-year-old photos were taken just last week.
Besides Penn’s efforts, it seems that social media is behind the recent rise of foodtography.
39 And the star posts just one delicious-looking food picture with the place where it was taken. It can bring hundreds of new customers for the restaurant.
So while it’s fun to share pictures of delicious dishes with your friends, just remember the most important thing: 40
A. Don’t forget to eat your meal afterwards.
B. But now, some people just want to eat their meal.
C. Today, a social media star may have thousands of fans.
D. In fact, taking pictures before meals is not a recent thing.
