Children often have trouble describing their feelings. They are not able to talk about what they feel until the age of 12. A Feelings Chart can help children find what they are feeling.
A Feeling Chart shows the different feelings a child might have during the day. How could you make a Feelings Chart? First, parents need to talk with children about what kinds of feelings should be on the chart. Next, parents or children can draw colorful faces on a big piece of paper. Then they write words next to the faces to describe them. After completing the chart, put it up on the wall.
Most parents find it good to talk with children about their feelings before bedtime. It doesn’t matter how many faces children choose to describe their feelings. The key is that the chart will help children learn to express their feelings with words. Tim, a five-year-old boy, described his feelings by “I am really angry about that” when another two boys laughed at him. Judy, a
six-year-old girl, said “That made me very excited!” about one of her birthday presents. On the other side, parents should encourage children to describe their feelings by asking them questions like “Can you tell me how you felt at that time?” or “How do you feel, happy, excited, angry or sad?”

Prairie dogs are not dogs at all. These cute little animals are really related to squirrels. Prairie dogs got their name because they bark. Barking isn’t the only way prairie dogs send information. They use eleven different calls to communicate with each other.
Prairie dogs build towns underground. They build tunnels that connect different rooms. Some of these rooms are used like rooms in our own homes. Prairie-dog towns have bedrooms, children’s rooms, bathrooms, and rooms for keeping food.
Prairie dogs are social animals. Many family groups live in each town. A family may include as many as twenty prairie dogs. Family members take turns guarding the town. If a guard sees a coyote or a rattlesnake, the guard barks a warning. When a prairie dog wants to enter a town, the guard hugs and kisses it. This is how the guard makes sure the other animal is a member of the family.
Some people don’t like prairie dogs because these animals dig holes in the ground. But these creatures are good neighbors. Many birds and other animals use prairie-dog tunnels for safety. We should do our best to protect prairie dogs.
