It's really fascinating. I think Discovery Channel does produce some of the best documentaries in the world.6. They present programs of sports and entertainment. We can enjoy listening to different forms of music and songs on the radio and watch the live broadcast of sports events and the reports of adventures in the mountains and unknown lands. In this way, radio is more imaginative because it forces you to form pictures in your own mind rather than providing you with visual information, which is what television does.In addition, radio is more flexible than television, since you don't have to be in the same room as the radio set in order to listen to the programs, but you do have to be in the same room as a television in order to watch it.A radio is also far more portable than a television. You can listen to the radio while driving in the car, jogging or even just walking around. Although portable televisions do exist, you can't really watch one while you are jogging, for example. One of the main advantages of radio, however, is that it offers the listener more immediate access to information. Most radio stations broadcast news reports at regular half-hour or hourly intervals, but television news is only broadcast a few times each day. Also, the variety of topics you get on the radio is much greater than that on television.Radio is more personal than television. Many radio programs are interactive in a way that television can never be. Listeners can call the radio station they are listening to and express their thoughts and opinions live on air. You can't ring up a television station and express your opinions, can you?Language and Culture Notes1.Background information From its appearance at the beginning of the 20th century, radio had been a major provider of news and entertainment until television came into being. The early models of the modern television appeared in the 1920s but its popularity did not begin until after World War II, especially until after color TV became available in the 1960s. Today TV sets are much more sophisticated. Not only are they attached with remote control, but they can be hooked to VCR, VCD, DVD and even to the Internet. So it is not surprising that more and more people now watch TV to get news, sports, and a great variety of entertainment. Yet television cannot completely replace radio. Many people still like radio because of its compactness in size. Radio also survives as a major part of a tape recorder, a hi-fi and a necessary component of a car. To adapt to the invention of TV, radio has also made great changes in its system, and in the way it presents programs. The stereo system, for example, is successful in winning music lovers to radio programs.2. portable television A television set about 3" in size and can easily be carried or moved3. at regular half-hour or hourly intervals(the program is broadcast on the radio) every half hour or every hour4. Many radio programs are interactive …Program hosts or hostesses can get immediate feedback from their listeners and they can discuss a topic on the air. With TV, however, audience interaction is more difficult. The usual way is to send out a TV crew to bring in live coverage of people's response to some event.5.live on air Listeners' thoughts or opinions can be heard on the radio at the moment they are spoken rather than later on a recording.Exercise 1: Listening for general understandingListen to the recording once and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.1. What is the passage mainly about?a. The advantages of radio over television.b. The difference between radio and television.c. The changes made to radio programs.d. The invention of television has had a great impact on radio.c. Radio definitely has a larger audience than television does.d. Radio will not easily be replaced by television.Exercise 2: Listening for detailsListen to the recording once again and fill in the chart with the missing information.Speaking TasksPair WorkListen to the conversations and repeat after the recording. Then work with your partner to create your own conversations by replacing the underlined parts with your own words.Part CAdditional ListeningA Passage The Benson Family’s DecisionA. A year ago the Benson family decided that they were spending too much time in front of the box. So they got rid of it. And they have been living without a television for almost a year now. How have they been spending their free time then?“We found it very hard for the first few weeks,” says Mrs. Benson. “We didn’t k now what to do with our free time. But since then it’s been fine. We’ve done so many things that we hadn’t done for such a long time. And I’ve even joined the local drama society.Mr. Benson has taken up tennis. Daughter Emily has been learning to play the piano and son Mark has been going to judo (柔道) classes. In more traditional news programs, the news is read by a newsreader. There are many broadcasting organizations in a country and competition among them is serious. 9) Most TV and radio networks want to increase the size of their audience, or their ratings. Good ratings are especially important during prime-time, the time of day when most people watch TV. 大学英语综合教程四Unit13答案

大学英语综合教程四Unit13答案

KEY TO EXERCISESText comprehensionI. Decide which of the following best states the author's purpose of writing.C.II. Judge, according to the text, whether the following statements are true or false.1. F. Refer to Paragraph 1. What the author means by "The season was wrong" is that in the winter of Pennsylvania, it was impossible to see bluebirds, as the state is located in the northeastern part of the United States.2. T. Refer to Paragraph 2.3. F. Refer to Paragraph 13. The man had a playful spirit without an evil purpose. He playeda trick on his children, only to amuse them and make their hard life lively.4. T. Refer to Paragraph 15.5. F. Refer to Paragraph 20. Though it is true that in the narrator's view the presence of his children had boosted the old man's spirits, she didn't ascribe her father's survival exclusively to it. The medical work and, more importantly, the latent influence of the bluebirds were not to be ignored. The old man had a special feeling for blue-birds. It is sensible to believe that his constant concern for the creatures must have worked in his winning of the battle. This can be seen from his display of great care for the birds once he returned home from the hospital.6. F. Refer to Paragraphs 27-28. The man pretended to have forgotten the name of the bird and asked the narrator about it. This was actually a reflection of his playful spirit deeply ingrained in him.III. Answer the following questions.1. Because her father was hospitalized for a heart attack. Since he had already experienced two attacks, the narrator was unsure whether the old man could survive this time.2. The fact that every human being has an instinct for life couldn't account for everything here. There are more reasons why the old man didn't want to stop fighting his disease. For one thing, he had a family. He loved them and they loved him. For another, he couldn't rest assured of the bluebirds for whom he had a special feeling. In a sense, he no longer treated the creatures as animals but as humans and even as his own children. These new children, to him, needed more help from him than his grown-up children, as can be seen from his extraordinary concern for them when he was released from hospital.3. Whatever job you do, you must put your heart into it.4. The man was fascinated by the species and learned their characteristics through careful and long-term observations. He acquired the knowledge of the renowned quality of the creatures, the number of broods a pair would have and the help of the earlier nestlings offered to feed the later ones. All this made the narrator realize that her father had become an expert on this species.5. First, they have the same number of children. The coal miner had six children to raise and Caruso's mate laid six eggs. Second, Caruso and his mate made herculean efforts to feed the nestlings just as the miner did to support his family , loading nine tons a day and going on to work once he was back home. What the bluebirds did probably reminded the old man and thenarrator of the hard life they had ever had. This may strengthen their affection for the creatures.6. What the old man gave to the bluebirds was not just nesting boxes but his constant care as well, though his emotional offering may be unintelligible to the creatures. What the birds gave back was nothing else but a promise of hope and triumph. The spiritual support from the creatures must have worked in his recovery from his severe heart attack.IV. Explain in your own words the following sentences taken from the text.1 . The sparkle in his eyes often betrayed his playful spirit when they met your eyes in conversation.2. Dad must have been encouraged by his children's presence at his bedside in his fight against the heart attack ...3. Dad could only move around in the rooms downstairs, unable to climb upstairs or go out-side.4. After the fight, she assumed again her arrogant posture while Caruso passionately went on with his pleasant courtship songs.5. Suddenly one extremely clear morning, when the sky was as blue as the color of Caruso's courting clothing ...Structure analysis of the textIn Part I (Paragraphs 1-7), the author tells us the background of her story, especially the importance of the small birds to her father. In Part Ⅱ (Paragraphs 8-19), she recalls the life of her father, his philosophy of life, his sacrifice for the family and children and then his love for the birds. In Part III (Paragraphs 20-30), she focuses on how her father treated the birds and how fee birds paid him back.Rhetorical features of the textThe author used the following endearments to describe the playful character of her father; eyes ... wise as an owl's, sparkle with devilment (Paragraph 9), sly grin, the devilment that returned to his eyes (Paragraph 28). And her father called the bluebirds rascals.More examples of endearment: A husband can call his wife "bitch" and the wife can call him "bastard" in some situations to express their love for each other in a playful way.Vocabulary exercisesI. Some people call it “the wonder drug”. Then d o you know who invented it? It was Felix Hoffmann, a German scientist, who worked this wonder. On March 6, 1999 the maker of aspirin, the German company Bayer celebrated Hoffmann’s discovery. The activity marked the 100th anniversary of aspirin’s launch.Berlin’s Imperial Patent Office granted Bayer a trademark for aspirin on March 6, 1899, but the company was denied patent protection because of its similarity to earlier discoveries. For this reason, aspirin was sold initially in powder form. However, it later became the first drug to be sold as a tablet.A Spanish philosopher summed up the remedy’s influence in the 1930s saying that modern man lived in “the age of the aspirin”. One hundred years after its introduction, Bayer’s annual sales total about 1 billion marks, which equals US$555 million. Even in the 21st century, aspirinsales remain strong. The wonder drug is now widely used as a preventive treatment for heart attacks and strokes.Aspirin is simple to make and even easier to administer. Like Coca-Cola and Levi’s, it is one of the brands to have gone beyond cultures, borders and generations to enjoy almost universal recognition. The drug has now become as enduring an element of life in the 21st century as the car and television.Language and Culture Notes1. Background informationThe research on aspirin began in 1897 by Felix Hoffmann, a German chemist at Bayer Chemical and Pharmaceutical Company. Two years later, in May 1899, Bayer began selling it around the world. Aspirin’s popularity grew in the first half of the 20th century, spurred by its use in treating the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. In the past several decades, scientists have found that aspirin is effective as an anti-clotting agent that reduces the risk of clotting diseases. It is now widely used as a preventive treatment for heart attacks and strokes.2.Felix Hoffmann(1868-1946) a German chemist. Hoffmann studied medicine in Munich and joined Bayer’s research department in 1894. He is believed to be the first to synthesize acetylsalicylic acid intoa usable form for medical applications. Bayer later marketed it as aspirin.3. BayerBayer Group, the third largest chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world, founded in 1863. The firm is a leader in research and development, spending nearly 12 percent of its revenues on this segment.4. A Spanish philosopher …“the age of the aspirin”.The Spanish philosopher praised aspirin very highly. It is because the drug was widely used and considered very effective in reducing fever in treating the 1918 flu (also called Spanish flu), which was believed to have killed as many as 2.5-5% of human population from March 1918 to June 1920.However, a century later, some people began to question the use of aspirin in treating Spanish flu. They hold that aspirin’s quick action of relief of pain or fever might have masked the symptoms, delayed the treatment and made it more difficult to find the right remedy.Exercise 1Listen to the recording and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.1. Why?2.What is the usual life span of a drug? Why do some drugs cease to be used?3.How popular is aspirin?4.What new use has been found for aspirin?5.What is the drug mainly used for today?Possible Answers (for the teacher’s reference)For “” is known to most of us as online shopping is getting more and more popular. It is amazing that Amazon, which started its business in a garage, could have become the w orld’s leading online shopping website today. I think its founder Jeffery Bezos is really an inventive entrepreneur. At the days when companies were still at their early stages, he had the foresight to see the great potential of the commercial use of the Internet and opened an online bookshop, using a garage as his office and doors as desks. Now it has grown to be a website to go for books all over the world and a seller of every kind of commodity and service one can think of.Personally I haven’t d one any shopping on this website. I guess it would be far too expensive to have things shipped to me from the United States. My experience with online shopping is restricted to and .Shopping online is great. With a few clicks on the Internet, we can quickly seek out best deals for the goods or services we want to buy with different sellers. As online stores are available 24 hours a day, it is both convenient and time-saving. And the best thing about it is its lower price. Very ofte n we can get a discount. However, there’s no denying that online shopping also has its disadvantages. Sometimes the delivery is delayed and sometimes the merchandise delivered may not be as good as we thought it would be. But in spite of all these, shopping online has certainly revolutionized our way of buying things. For “Wonder Drug”Aspirin is really a wonderful drug. It has existed for over one hundred years, yet is still widely used to treat all kinds of illnesses. A century is a very long period of time indeed. During such a period, many other drugs were developed, marketed, used, and then disappeared. Some were replaced by their improved versions. Some were banned due to serious side effects discovered later in use. But aspirin, marketed in Germany by the end of the 19th century, is able to cross borders and enter the medicine cabinets of people’s homes across the world. No cultural differences or generation gaps can stop its spread. It has joined the ranks of famous brands like Coca-Cola and Levi’s to receive almost universal recognition. And the most amazing thing is that just when people are beginning to have second thoughts about using the drug as a fever reliever, some new use is found for the drug. Today it is largely taken as a preventive drug for heart attacks and strokes. No wonder some people call it “the wonder drug”.Part CTest Your ListeningA Compound DictationListen to the passage three times and supply the missing information.Nowadays in the United States, there are 1) 200,000 miles of pipeline, 170,000 gas stations and 243 million vehicles using petroleum fuels.Guy Nègre, the 2) founder and CEO of Motor Development International, is hoping to change all that. Background Information---Hard Times
The Depression of 1893 was one of the worst in American history with the unemployment rate exceeding ten percent for half a decade. One way to measure the severity of the depression is to examine the unemployment rate. Annual unemployment was not directly measured until 1929, so there is no consensus on the precise magnitude of the unemployment rate of the 1890s. Despite the differences in the two series, however, it is obvious that the Depression of 1893 was an important event. The unemployment rate exceeded ten percent for five or six consecutive years. The only other time this occurred in the history of the US economy was during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Unit 13 People1 EQ : IQSuccess comes with a high EQMost students do an IQ test early in their school career. Even if they never see their results, they feel that their IQ is what determines how well they are going to doin life. When they see other students doing better than them, they usually believe that those students have a higher IQ and that there is nothing they can do to change facts. However, new research into EQ suggests that success is not simply the result of a high IQ.While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence. Professor Salovey, who invented the term EQ, gives the following description: At work, it is IQ that gets you hired but it is EQ that gets you promoted. Supported by his academic research, Professor Salovey suggests that when predicting someone's future success, their character, as measured by EQ tests, might actually matter more than their IQ.Professor Salovey may be correct. For example, have you ever wondered why some of the smartest students in your class, who you think deserve good grades, sometimes end up failing exams? Perhaps their failure is because of their low EQ. People are often mistaken in thinking that those with high IQs always have high EQs as well. This association can exist, but it is just as possible for someone with a low IQ to have a high EQ or someone with a high IQ to have a low EQ.It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life. They are also less likely to be troubled by problems. On the other hand, there is little doubt that people with low EQs often have problems getting on with other people and dealing with difficult situations; thus they have a harder time surviving in life.People generally believe that a person's IQ is determined by birth. However, most social scientists agree that EQ has a lot to do with education. Some are trying to study the possibility of im proving a person's EQ, especially in terms of ―people skills‖, such as understanding and communication.Professor Mayer, recognised by many as a leading expert in the study of changes to people's EQs, recently announced the results of a study on senior high school students. When normal students were introduced to students with disabilities, they found that, afterwards, the normal students were more willing to help people with difficulties. They also showed a better understanding of the disabled students' feelings compared to students who had not been involved in the study. There was also an obvious change in the disabled students' attitudes. They became more positive about life and more willing to try new things. The results of studies such as these show that EQ is as important, if not more important than IQ. To get ahead in the world and lead a happy successful life means getting on with other people and being able to understand and react to situations in the best way possible. This requires a high EQ – the higher the better. And the fact that it might be possible to raise EQs means that schools need to make sure that theirstudents are receiving the education they really need, and know that their futures are not entirely determined by their IQs.2 Personalities and JobsTapescriptTeacher: Today we're going to focus on jobs and personalities. I was trying to do some revision for an important oral exam in the local library and people kept disturbing me. I was getting more and more annoyed and of course, the more upset I got, the less I was able to concentrate. The last straw was when I heard someone singing behind me.The singing was so loud that I could even recognise the song! I turned around and glared at the person who was singing. It was a tall girl about the same age as me and she had a big smile on her face. She was standing with a book in her hands near the ―English Literature‖ section. She looked like a literary type and seemed very interested in what she was reading. I glanced at the book's cover. It was a book of Tennyson's poems. The fact that she looked like a sensitive, friendly girl didn't matter. If anything, it made me even angrier. ―How could she be so selfish?‖ I thought angrily. In fact, I'm surprised there wasn't steam coming out of my ears!I picked up my books, glared at her and whispered angrily, ―Thanks to your noise, I've been unable to study. You're so selfish!‖ I still hate thinking of that moment. Let me tell you the rest of the story though. Because I left the library in such a hurry, I left my most important textbook behind. It was only when I got home two hours later that I realised I'd forgotten it and there was nothing I could do as the library was closed. I was so upset that I almost cried. Just then, the phone rang. Ianswered it and a gentle voice introduced the speaker as Jenny and asked if I was Jane. After confirming that I was, Jenny said that she had noticedI'd left my book in the library and as my name was in it, she'd asked a librarian to get my phone number from their files. She said that she didn't live far away and could bring it around for me if I needed it. I sighed with relief and agreed to meet her at the convenience store down the road. I was so grateful! Of course you've guessed who Jenny was. She was the girl I had shouted at for singing. When I recognised her in the convenience store, I was filled with shame and apologised several times for my rude behaviour. I felt so guilty, but Jenny just laughed and told me she was glad to see that I'd also left my glare in the library! I couldn't help laughing at this and I invited her back to my apartment for a quick cup of tea.We got along really well and ever since then we've been best friends. We're very much alike and we tell each other everything. To be honest, I trust her more than anyone else. I often think how lucky I am. If Jenny hadn't been a kind person who was willing to forgive my shortcomings, I would never have experienced such true friendship.。
