1. Introduction

The test was performed on a set of the SiC non-linear resistors of type 600A /US16/ p / Spec. 6298. The purpose of the test was to investigate the loading capability of the SiC non-linear resistor for two cases:

No. 1: Intermittent load with current of approximately 2’200 A and duty cycle:

- Loading period was 0,5 seconds

- Cooling period was 30 minutes

- Repetition of duty cycle was ten (10) times

No. 2: 6’000 A in duration of 0,1 second.

Testing results are shown in Item 3 & 4

Records are shown in Item 5 & 6

3. Test No. 1: 2’200 A; 620 V; 0,5 seconds

I: 2’200 A DC (according to diagram)

Uout: ~ 690 V DC (according to diagram)

Uc: 6,0 V DC (Gate Control)

Uac: 700 V AC (Supply of thyristor converter)

Ambient temperature: 23 °C

Temperatures on measuring elements:

Measuring Point: Before: After the test:

(1) 26 °C 92 °C

(2) 25 °C 106 °C

(3) 36 °C 130 °C

Measuring points are indicated on Figure 1.

Maximum over temperature rise: 107 °K < 145 °K

Conclusion:

- Temperature rise is below the specified temperature limit for the given loading conditions. - Dissipated energy per cycle: 770 kJ

4. Test No. 2: 6’000 A; 0,1 seconds

I: 6’000 A DC (according to diagram)

Uout: ~ 1’000 V DC (according to diagram)

Uc: 6,0 V DC (Gate Control)

Uac: 1’180 V AC (Supply of thyristor converter)

Ambient temperature: 24 °C

Temperatures on measuring elements:

Measuring Point: Before: After the test:

(1) 25 °C 90 °C

(2) 25 °C 85 °C

(3) 35 °C 120 °C

Measuring points are indicated on Figure 1.

Maximum over temperature rise: 96 °K < 145 °K

Conclusion:

- Temperature rise is below the specified temperature limit for the given loading conditions. - Dissipated energy: 600 kJ
