A comparison of American Revolution and the French
Revolution
At the end of the 18thc, two revolutions, the American Revolution and the French Revolution broke out respectively on the new land and the old one. These two revolutions which regarded democracy, freedom and equality as their concept helped to push the bourgeois revolution to its climax. They were paragons of the bourgeois revolution.
The American Revolution is the first large-scale war of independence which fought against the colonialism. Its vi ctory weakened the colonial system of the British Empire and set an example for other countries who had been suffering the pain of colonialism. The American Revolution was a bourgeois revolution. It overthrew the British colonial rule and founded the United States of America. This revolution helped to abolish the firstborn of succession rule and some other feudal remnants. The productive forces were liberated, thus helped to broaden the way of the capitalism in America. The victory of the American Revolution pushed the bourgeois revolution in Europe.
The French Revolution stemmed fundamentally from the conflict between those who supported the Old Regime and those who promoted change. It marked its beginning on July 14th,
1789 when the armed French stormed the Bastille. The revolution which influenced the Europe and the whole world lasted for 5 years. Many people involved in the revolution. The common people showed their strength and pushed the revolution moving forward. Compared with the Glorious Revolution in England, the French revolution was much more violent and more exhaustive. The French Revolution put an end to the imperial rule which had lasted for more than one thousand year and changed the properties of the country. Just as American Revolution, the French Revolution also set an example for other countries.
The revolutions in America and Frence had a lot of similarities. The primary cause of the revolutions was that the capitalist development was hampered. The common people, especially the bourgeoisie were not satisfied with the current situation. In order to handle the regime and then to develop the capitalism, they started the Revolution. In America, the colony was prohibited to trade with other countries or colonies except the British colonist. What's more, after the Seven Years' war, the British tried every means to exploit the colony. All these factors impeded the economic development in America. So the bourgeoisie started the American Revolution. Similarly, the
Seven Years' war left the French with a heave burden. The King Louis XVI convened a meeting, hoping it would be possible to get rid of the burden by carrying out a new tax. But, no agreement was reached. Then the king dismissed the Estate-General. The people realized it would be not possible to develop the economy in the current political institution. Thus the bourgeoisie decided to change the situation by revolution. Common people were involved in both of the revolutions. And both of the revolution succeeded.
There were some differences between the AR and the FR. The purpose of the AR was to overthrow the British colonial rule and to realize the independence of the country. As mentioned before, the bourgeoisie started the revolution, but the southern plantation owners also took part in the revolution. The victory of American Revolution gained the independence for this country, but it didn't solve the problems of lands and the slavery. Then the North and the South began to develop themselves in different ways which buried hidden troubles for the American civil war. While the purpose of the FR was to overthrew the tyranny of the Bourbon Dynasty. And the revolution achieved all the purposes that it meant to achieve.
The French Revolution also shocked the feudal system of other European countries.
the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, these two documents should be mentioned when we talk about the American Revolution and the French Revolution. There were some similarities and differences between these two documents. Both of them emphasized the importance of the freedom and the democracy and showed the strong requirements of the bourgeoisie. They influence the western politics a lot. The differences are that the declaration of independence was against the colonialism, while the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen was against the feudal autocratic rule and hierarchy.
The American Revolution and the French Revolution have great significance in the world history.。
