Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D.

A smile is a strong sign of a friendly and open attitude and a willingness to communicate. It is a positive, silent sign sent with the hope the other person will smile back. When you smile, you show you have noticed the person in a positive way. The result? That person will usually smile back. You might not realize a closed position is the cause of many conversational problems. A common closed position is sitting with your arms and legs crossed and your hand covering your mouth or chin. This is often called the "thinking pose". Ask yourself this question; Are you going to interrupt someone who appears to be deep in thought? This position gives off "stay away" signs and prevents your main " sign sender" ( your mouth) from being seen by others looking for inviting conversational signs. The open body position is most effective when you place yourself within communicating distance of the other person—that is, within about five feet. Take care, however, not to enter someone s "personal space′′ by getting too close, too soon. Leaning forward a little while a person is talking shows your interest and how you are listening to what the person is saying. By doing this, you are saying: I hear what you′re saying, and I′m interested in—keep talking! Often people will lean back with their hands over their mouth, chin, or behind their head in the "thinking" pose. This position gives off signs of judgment, doubt, and lack of interest from the listener. Since most people do not feel comfortable when they think they are being judged, this leaning-back position serves to prevent the speaker from continuing. In

many cultures the most common form of first contact between two people is a handshake. Be the first to extend your hand in greeting. Couple this with a friendly "Hello", a nice smile, and your name and you have made the first step to open the lines of communication. Eye contact should be natural, not forced or overdone. Direct eye contact shows you are listening to the other person and that you want to know about her.

A.shows you are interested in and listening to what the speaker is saying

B.shows you want to keep some distance from the speaker

D.makes him believe you are not interested in his talk

Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Jennifer: The greenhouse effect might be causing the change, but it′s a cycle that′s been tracked for about a hundred years and in the past 20 years or so it just stopped cycling. And this is only affecting a small part of the world. People talk about greenhouse effect because they want to show how much concern they have about the future of the world. Don′t be as silly as them.Kac: Spring just hits here, too. It′s so nice—windows open, the fresh air of changing seasons just lights me up. When I was younger this was the season for walking through the

melting snow and ice, across roadsides, through square acre forests among the fields, I got so excited to be out in the wild. It′s tough to be in the city this time of year. Maybe I′ll go camping soon!Soscia: In the city you don′t have seasons. Spring rain does not make man-made structure grow, and wet roads are not inconvenient for you because you can move around in your car. Summer′s heat is no longer a problem and air-conditioning makes your rooms cool as autumn. The colors of the city don′t change because nature is not powerful enough to change them as she changes the color of woods. Winter snow leaves nothing white but muddy roads.Harno: Snow in Georgia is a funny thing. We have been having 24 hours weather news on the TV for the past week, just because there is a threat of snow. Schools have closed based on these predictions , and all we got was rain. But the rule is that if it sticks to the ground, school is canceled. It would be a great excuse to get the day off. People rush to the grocery store to buy milk and bread— I don′t know why, but they do. When I was growing up here we used to get one or two big snowfalls a year, but there has not been any for the last few. Damn global warming.Macland: It′s been so nice. I am of the firm belief that in February we get the day like cool autumn season in November... In February it′s like a warm period that′s been getting, stronger and longer every year since my boyhood, and it gets defeated by the final blowing snowstorm of March at least once, but anyone can survive(生存)those snowstorms, since we all know they′ll be gone in a few days. Then I make a commitment to keep talking even when it might not be comfortable-in other words, to work at it. The will to talk is important to becom a better talker. I think one reason I"ve had a certain amount of success in broadcasting is that the audience can see that. I love what I"m doing. You can"t fake that. And if you try, you will fail.

Rew

Careful listening makes you a better talker. Good follow-up questions are the mark of a good conversationalist. I find this is always true. Actually, I have an important rule that I remind myself

of every morning: nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I"m going to learn, I have to do it by listening.

Sapir

The best conversationalists are capable of talking about issues and experiences beyond their own daily lives. You can expand your world through travel, but you can also do it without leaving your own back yard. The point is:people with backgrounds different from your own can help you and your thinking.

Tate

Anybody I"ve ever talked to for more than a few minutes knows at least two things about me: I"m from Brooklyn, New York, and I"m Chinese. That"s because I"m deeply proud of both. You should be as open and honest with your conversational partners as you"d want them to be with you, willing to reveal what your background is and what your likes and dislikes are.

Aza

One of my cardinal rules of conversation is never to stay too serious too long. Similarly, a key quality I look for in a potential guest is a sense of humor, preferably self-deprecating. Frank Sinatra"s never been afraid to make fun of himself-I think the key to his story-and most appealing to the audience-is that he so obviously enjoys retelling this joke at his own expense.

Now match each of the persons with the appropriate statement.

A. Be the genuine you.

The name has long tradition which can be traced hack to the royal background. Charlotte, derived from French name, pays tribute to her grandfather, prince of Wales. And Charlotte is also Kate's sister, Pippa Middleton's middle name. Kensington Palace revealed the royal baby's full name yesterday after days of speculation and close friends of Princess Diana immediately said the choice means the spirit of Prince William's beloved mother 'lives on'. William was, however, clear that his baby girl should not have Diana as a first name. "It would have been a millstone around her neck," said one of the princess' s longtime friends. Within minutes of the name being announced this afternoon, Diana's closest friend Rosa Monckton said: "Diana's spirit lives on in her sons, and now her name lives on in her granddaughter 'Charlotte Elizabeth Diana'. "Diana was the godmother of Mrs. Monckton's daughter Dominica The British citizens show their satisfaction with this name via Intemet. They said it is the perfect name for their lovely princess.

I leave the vault, and as the guard closes the door, a marine archaeologist asks if I want to see anything else. As an example he shows me an astrolabe, a navigation tool that preceded the sextant. Few have survived. "We have three of the oldest known," he says. He directs me to a paper on astrolabes written by a Cuban colleague, who quoted a 16th-century instruction: "He who wants to take the sun with an astrolabe at sea, must be seated near the main mast, the place where the boat oscillates the least and is quiet." I want to take the measure of Cubas past, so I tell the archaeologist I would like to go to the place where the plain things are. I am here not only to see treasures that glitter but also to see and touch objects that illumine moments of the past. Smiling, he takes me into storage rooms where he and other archaeologists preserve cargoes from four centuries of wrecks. Jumbled on these shelves is the stuff of Cubas long reign as counting house and command center for Spains New World colonies. I see knickknacks destined for one of the annual 18th-century trade fairs, where Cubans bought imports from Spain. I also see, pallid from centuries in the sea, dozens of little painted ceramic dogs, lions, cats, and deer later shipped from England. Stacked nearby are sets of dinner dishes, tankards, an hourglass, a bottle of very Old Spanish wine. On another day, in fading light, I walk the ramparts of El Morro, its lighthouse standing tall over Havanas harbor. The old fortress, by day a warren of tourist stops, changes by night, looming deeper into the shadows of Havanas past. As torches light the darkness, I watch Cuban soldiers, costumed as 18th-century Spanish sentries, march along the ramparts of the Castillo de San Carlos and fire a cannon that salutes
