should be exercised in performing procedures
preceded by a WARNING heading.
Always observe the measures listed below when performing repair or maintenance procedures.
WARNING
1.Always disconnect the product from both the power source and host computer before performing any maintenance or repair procedure.
2.No work should be performed on the unit by persons unfamiliar with basic safety measures dictated for all electronics technicians in their line
of work.
3.In performing testing described in this manual, do not connect the unit to a power source until instructed to do so. When the power supply
cable must be connected, use extreme caution in working on the power supply and other electronic components.
CAUTION
1.Repairs on EPSON products should be performed only by an EPSON-certified repair technician.
2.Make certain that the source voltage is the same as the rated voltage listed on the serial number/rating plate. If the EPSON product has a
primary AC rating different from the available power source, do not connect it to the power source.
3.Always verify that the EPSON product has been disconnected from the power source before removing or replacing printed circuit boards
and/or individual chips.
4.To protect sensitive microprocessors and circuitry, use static discharge equipment, such as anti-static wrist straps, when accessing
internal components.
5.Replace malfunctioning components only with those components recommended by the manufacturer; introduction of second-source ICs or
other nonapproved components may damage the product and void any applicable EPSON warranty.

1.3 Interface
1.3.1 Parallel Interface
1.3.1.1 Forward Channel
† Transmission mode: 8 bit parallel
† Synchronization: By STROBE pulse
† Handshaking: By BUSY and /ACKNLG signal
† Signal level: TTL compatible level
† Adaptable connector: 36-pin of 57-30360 (amphenol) or equivalent *It is recommended to use the interface cable as short as you need. When using these signals, the twist pair line should be used and the return side should be connected to the signal ground.
Table 1-9. Signals at Parallel I/F forward channel
Table 1-10. Signals at Parallel I/F forward channel NOTE: 1.Return side means twist pair return and is connected to the signal ground level. Also, each signal regarting to the interface
should use the twist pair wire line and the return side also
should be connected. Also, this cable is shielded wire and it is
effective to connect to each chassis GND in the center
machine and printer for electrostatic noise.
2.Conditions for interface are based on TTL level. Rise and
fall time should be within 0.2 μS.
3.Refer to the figure 1-7 for transmission timing of each signal.
4.Do not perform data transmitting ignoring /ACKNLG or BUSY
signals. (The data transmission to the printer must be performed
after confirming that /ACKNLG or when the BUSY signal is low.)
5.It is possible to perform the printing test including interface circuit
without using equipment from outside when 8-bit data signal is
set to appropriate word code and connect then forcefully to
/ACKNLG and /STROBE. However, it is necessary to set the
Parallel I/F mode in the EEPROM “Normal”.

1.3.3 Operation when the receiving buffer is full Generally, hosts abandons data transfer to peripherals when a peripheral is in the busy state for dozens of seconds continuously. To prevent this kind of time-out, the printer receives data very slowly, several bytes per minute, even if the printer is in busy state. This slow down is started when the rest of the input buffer becomes several hundreds of bytes. Finally, the printer is in the busy state continuously when the input buffer is full. 1.3.4 Interface Selection
IP-100 has 2 built-in interfaces; the parallel interface and serial interface. These interfaces are selected automatically.
†Automatic selection
After the power is turned on, the interface that receives data first is
selected. When the host stops data transfer and the printer is in the
stand-by state for the seconds (about 10 seconds), the printer is returned to the idle state. Then, I/F which receive the data next time is selected.
†Interface state and interface selection
…When the parallel interface is not selected, the interface gets into the busy state.
…When the serial interface is not selected, the interface set the DTR signal MARK(HIGH).
…When the printer is initialized or returned to the idle state(no I/F is selected), the parallel interface gets into the ready state, the serial
interface sets the DTR signal SPACE (LOW).
…Caution that the interrupt signal such as the -INIT signal on the parallel interface is not effective while that interface is not selected.

Table 1-18. LED Indication
NOTE: “1*”:Refer to Section 1.5 Error conditions.
“---” in the table means no change.
1.5 Error Conditions
This printer goes to the error condition when the following conditions are detected. When the printer is in the error condition, data input is stopped by setting the /ERROR signal as “LOW” and BUSY signal as “HIGH”. At this time, the printer will not be able to print automatically.
1.5.1 Ink Out
†Detects both monochrome and color ink end.
†When it gets close to the end of ink, the printer indicates by the indicator.
When the ink runs out, the printer indicates “Ink Out” and stops. In case of color ink cartridge, if just one color runs out, the printer goes to the
error condition.
It is prohibited to use the ink cartridge which is once taken out of the printer. (Be careful when performing the repair service or
checking)
1.5.2 Paper Out
†The printer goes to this error condition when the printer tries to feed
a paper but there is no paper.
1.5.3 Paper Jam
†The printer goes to this error condition, when the paper is not ejected at power on by the regular paper eject operation of the standard steps,or by FF command or Feed/Eject switch.
1.5.4 No Cartridge
†The printer goes to this error when the ink cartridge is not installed or comes off.1.5.5 Maintenance Request
†When the ink waste liquid reaches the certain amount, the printer indicates this error and stops. The printer does not recover from this error until the ink absorber (pad) is replaced and a waste ink counter is reset.
1.5.6 Fatal Error
†This printer goes to this error when carriage control error and character generator access error are detected.
NOTE: See Table on page 20 for indicator indication.
1.6 Initialization
IP-100 has three kinds of initialization methods.
†Hardware Initialization
This printer is initialized when the power is turned on. When the printer is initialized, following actions are performed.
1.Initializes printer mechanism
2.Clears input data buffer
3.Clears print buffer
4.Sets the default values
†Software Initialization
ESC @ command also initializes the printer. When the printer is initialized, following actions are performed.
1.Clears print buffer
2.Sets the default values
†Panel Initialization
The printer initialized when the printer is turned off one and is turned on again within 10 seconds, or when /INIT signal is input.
1.Caps the print head
2.Eject the paper
3.Clears input data buffer
4.Clears print buffer
5.Sets the default values 1.
6.1 Initialization Settings
IP-100 initializes following values when the initialization is performed. Default setting, panel setting and remote command setting, which are possible to be stored are initialized as default values.
…Page position: Present paper location as page heading position …Line spacing: 1/6 inch

Figure 1-14. Basic Operating Modes
The basic operating modes can be switched at any time by pressing the All, Index, One or Range switch.
NOTE:When a mode is selected, the corresponding LED indicator lights or flashes. (See Table 1-21 on page 24)
The All Photo mode is selected immediately after a memory card is inserted. However, the Camera mode is selected if the memory card contains a print designation file. If a print designation file exists in the memory card, press the All switch to alternate between the All Photo mode and Camera mode. Similarly, press the Index switch to alternate between the Draft Index mode and Index mode. (The Draft Index mode is selected initially.)
As the format (layout and size), select, and set (quality and enhancement) printing conditions are saved independently for each basic operating mode, the previous printing conditions are restored each time the basic operating mode is selected again. However, as the paper (type and size) printing conditions are common to all basic operating modes, the previous paper setting is not restored when a basic operating mode is selected again. NOTE:While setting the frame function, the Index switch operates to designate index printing of the frame data. 1.10.1 Printing Functions
