On March 5, 1770, the soldiers, led by Captain Thomas Preston, were met by a large and taunting crowd of civilians. Captain Preston was unable to disperse the crowd. He ordered his troops "Don't Fire!" With all the commotion the soldiers probably did not hear his orders and they opened fire on the crowd killing three men instantly and another two who died later.

About 50 men disguised themselves as Indians who went on board, broke open the tea chests and poured the tea into the water.
Intolerable Acts
In September, 1774, in Philadelphia, a meeting involving 45 men representing all the 13 colonies except Georgia, at the suggestion of Virginia and Massachusetts.
The Boston Massacre
On October 1, 1768, a group of British soldiers arrived in Boston, MA. to maintain order. The civilians reacted to the redcoats like they were invaders by making fun of them through name calling, spitting, and fighting. During the next eighteen months tension mounted between the two sides.
Stamp Act passed by British Parliament in 1765
Stamped papers must be used for all legal documents and other articles----a way to shift the debt onto the colonies.
Conflicts between British Government and American Colonists
Before 1763, the colonial people had to depend much on England. However, as the colonies grew in population and wealth, they depend less and less for food, clothing and protection; England, on the other hand, exercised more and more strict policies upon the colonial people, trying to take more profits.
It did great harm to American merchants and their business and was abolished in 1770 because of strong opposition.

British Chancellor of the Exchequer after whom the Townshend Acts are named. Townshend Acts----all goods imported should be taxed.
