Topic 50 On IllusionSome people are committed to their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals. What is guiding them is a kind of illusion. Some people think that illusion is good for success while others argue that it is not so good because it may get people unrealistic. As far as I am concerned, illusion is necessary in our life only if it is encouraging and realistic. There are several reasons.First of all, there is power in illusion. The illusion can lead people to the path they want to go on and it gives us passion. We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses so that we can find pleasure in the fragrance of backyard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, and the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. The illusion can be enthusiastic love of life that puts sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.Secondly, we are born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant’s delight at th e jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlike wonder and illusion that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, no matter how old they are. For example, the famous cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shouldrs would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. Music, for him, was an elixir that made life a never-ending adventure. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”Lastly, people with illusions also love what they do, regardless of money or power or title. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as do a part-time vocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons and the executive who handcrafts furniture. We cannot afford to waste tears and energy and time on“might-have-beens”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.To sum up, God gives each bird its food, but he does not throw it into its nest. Wherever you want to go, just cherish your precious illusion and let your dream be realized.Topic 49 Is Seeking Psychiatric Help a Sign of Weakness? As the society develops, it is becoming more and more competitive. No wonder that the adults and the children are under great pressure. And unfortunately many people have mental problems. However, few of them voluntarily seek psychiatric help, for it is widely regarded as a sign of weakness. As far as I am concerned, people should develop the new idea that seeking psychiatric help is a normal need and that a person should seek help from a doctor if he is ill, whether mentally or physically. To start with, the mental problem is common among people in the modern society. With the increasingly faster pace of life, competition in the society becomes fierce, and relationships between people are intensified. The science and technology is developing, which means we should keep learning and keep up with the progress of knowledge. Most adults are suffering from the employment pressure. And students commonly feel depressed and worried about their academic study and the relationship with their friends. So it is clear that psychological or emotionalpr oblems are common in our life. It’s just like we feel uncomfortable when we get a cold or a cough. So seeking psychiatric help is nothing special. It will help people to be healthy. What’s more, seeking psychiatric help is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it shows you are brave enough to face the problem and solve it. Some people think that only insane patients go to see the psychiatrist. They are afraid of being seen as abnormal. And they don’t understand how the psychiatrists can help, what will happen during the therapy and so on. So they prefer to keep it as a secret when they have psychologic problems, which will make things worse. We should not hide our sickness for fear of treatment. We should abandon the prejudice against mental problems. In fact, seeking psychiatric help means a person have the courage to face the problem. It is never a sign of weakness. It is a way for us to strive to gain health. To sum up, seeking psychiatric help is not a sign of weakness or insanity. It is important for people to accept the new idea that it is a normal need, and that everyone who faces himself bravely should be respected.Topic 48 How to Handle Stress in Our Life?In this competitive society, people cannot avoid the stress from the bustle and hustle of modern life. Appropriate pressure is the motivation for our progress, while too much stress will have harmful effects on our health and work. We cannot avoid it, so we must learn to with it properly. In the first place, it is important to have a correct understanding about stress. We are now in a world where the fittest will survive, and it’s better to ensure survival than being defeated. But to individuals, the social environment will not change. We have to realize both the positive and negative aspects of stress. It is like a double-edged sword, which may be used by us, or may hurt us. The key point is whether you hold the blade or the handle. We can take it as a motive force for us to make progress, make full use of it and avoid being hurt by it.In the second place, people have to adjust their own mood and mentality. We should say to ourselves that I like challenges and I am strong, but never think I am a loser or I cannot stand that any more. The positive hint will change your attitude, and then affect the result of your behavior. And it is also of great importance to cherish what you have got. The common weak point of the human being is that he longs for what he cannot get, but does not value and protect what he has at the moment. Most people are thinking about how to own more, such as social status, power, honor and so on.At last the more they want , the more pressure they get. If they can give something up, they will feel better. Finally, some practical measures can help us to handle stress in our life. Having a plan on the career, increasing the competitiveness and learning to control your time will do much help to reduce the stress. It is advisable to separate work from life. Work hard when you are at work and have a good rest when you are free. In other words, there must be a boundary. To sum up, the stress in our life is inevitable, and we must learn to handle it effectively. We must have a right understanding about it, try our best to adjust our own mentality and use practical ways to reduce it.Topic 47 On Team SpiritWe are living in a globalized world and the cross-cultural communications are increasing nowadays. In other words, we have never been so closely connected with each other in the human histories. As a philosopher has pointed out, nobody is an isolated island. If we want to have a bright future, we need more cooperation for the development. Therefore, team spirit is very important. It is an bility that people can understand each other and cooperate with each other for the successful completion of some important tasks. We need such kind of ability in particular during the globalization for several reasons.First of all, team spirit offers us a platform where we can operate our collective talent to work out the best. Only when we work effectively together can we have the best chance to get the success. Taking the 2008 Beijing Olympics for example, I think the success of the event first goes to the superb team spirit of the organizers and millions of volunteers. So many people work hard and cooperate well for the single aim and the solitary goal: an exceptional Olympics for the whole world. A lot of student volunteers in Beijing are committed and work tirelessly during the hot summer. History has witnessed their brilliant teamwork and valuable contributions. What is more, team spirit is quite useful for personal career. As young students, we must learn the core and sharpen our skills in the team. If you work in a company, most of the time you have to finish or design a huge project with your colleagues. Each person can contribute their wisdom to the completion of the task. You cannot do it so well single-handedly. When we watch the Olympic Games on TV, we are so amazed by the excellent performances of the players. If they want to win the gold medals, they must compete as one person and exercise their own part well for the whole success. So we can say the team spirit is the secret of success. Finally, team spirit is the symbol of national power and strength. As we all know, the Chinese delegation has won the most medals during the 2008 Olympics and all Chinese people are so proud of our country. Another example is the touching power of the team spirit in the Sichuan earthquake. We were moved by the perseverance and persistence of the rescue workers, who were eager to help their compatriots. In conclusion, team spirit is an important ability and skill in the 21th century because we are all faced with the globalization and the questionof how to live better. Therefore, we must learn to work well in the team and let the team spirit guide us to success.Topic 47 On Team SpiritWe are living in a globalized world and the cross-cultural communications are increasing nowadays. This observation manifests itself most vividly in a line cited from the movie. If You Are the One, that is, “I do not lack money but friends”. Ironically, in the cell phone contact list of an average person, the number of cell phone numbers may reach a couple of hundreds. One can not help wondering if modern people become lonelier than before. Personally, I hold the opinion that modern people do become lonelier than before.Firstly, due to the urbanizing process at an unprecedented speed, the society becomes more mobile, for more and more people migrate from one city to another to seek fortune. Nowadays people in cities are consisted of migrate workers from rural areas, college graduates in pursuit of their dreams, businessmen across the country and the local. Given the fact that people from different regions have different subcultures, people tend to reject people with different backgrounds. Besides, as people are more interested in making money, they are more likely to conflict in interest. No wonder that circle of confidants has shrunk dramatically and the number of people with whom to discuss important matters has spirally increased.Secondly, while people are able to benefit from the advancement of new technologies, they are likely to depend more upon technologies instead of friends. Communication technologies such as the Internet and phones let people stay in contact with other people who are from remote areas, and spend time on the phone and the Internet communications instead of dealing with people face to face. Network games have gained their popularity to such an extent that many spend most of their spare time in playing network games and hence they become apathetic to have a good time with friends face to face. That face time seems more likely to develop friendships. As a result, the reduced face time would translate into a loose network between friends. In sum, urbanization has reduced the intimacy betweenhuman beings and makes them less likely to make friends than in the past and the advancement of modern technology also makes people more apathetic by reducing face-to-face contact with friends. I hope people can regain the intimacy between friends as before.Topic 44 Money First or Knowledge First?Everyone knows the importance of money and knowledge. Everyone must have money to fulfill their necessities and knowledge to make them respectful and help them gain money. But which one should be put in the first place in the particular college time? Some college students set up their own business, some speculate in the stock market, and some start their own studios.Undoubtedly, those students will not only earn enough money to fend for themselves, but also become fledged in the real world. However, I think college students should always concentrate on acquiring knowledge instead of seeking fortune in the particular state of our lives.Firstly, though knowledge can help you gain money, money can not buy you knowledge. For the majority of us, college time is a golden time for acquiring knowledge. Once we miss the golden time, we will not be compensated in the future. In this particular episode of our lives, we receive allowance from our parents, are not disturbed by the chores of housework, and are assisted by experienced teachers and classmates. And I can not imagine which stage of our lives is more favorable than this episode. The golden time for studies can be best illustrated by a conversation with an elder friend. He established a training school years ago and did make a fortune. But he always takes me into confidence that he wants to tear himself from the business and further studies in graduate school. He also admonishes me that I should work harder and harder, otherwise I will regret one day.Secondly, while college students can make some money in college time, they can not absorb themselves in their business wholeheartedly, which means that they are less likely to succeed in the corporate world than those who need not worry about studies. According to college curricula, students have to finish some compulsory courses and selective courses. They have to pass all required courses before getting diplomas. For some students from particular departments, they have to make more efforts than students pursuing other degrees. Accordingly, if college students run business, they will not only bear pressures imposed by studies, but also face the fierce competition in the market. Besides, college students are unfledged in comparison with other seasoned businessmen. Is it wise to take the riskof running business in college? In sum, college years is the golden period for studies in one’s life, and no one can afford to miss it. While college students have to make efforts to earn credits, and turn out to be unfledged, they had better concentrate on studies.Topic 43 Will Your Confidence Be Affected by External Factors?Confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our life. It is said that confidence is often the single ingredient that distinguishes a successful person from someone less successful. Yet many people only govern their behaviors based on what other people think, stay in their own comfort zones fearing failure and so avoiding taking risks, and oftentimes work hard to cover up mistakes and pray that they can fix the problem before anyone wiser. For those low-confidence people, they bear in their mind that some people are more competent, more beautiful, much wealthier than them, and hence they are reduced to frustrations. However, confidence should not be affected by those differences in terms of appearance, wealth, and family connections. Firstly, people can not improve their financial situations and change their appearances overnight, they are likely to change their mindset to become confident. For those who believe that confidence is based on wealth, appearance, and other external factors, their confidence is measured by external factors. In line with this belief, we can assume that only the wealthy, the beautiful, the handsome and the famous are confident. I think this is not the case. In our daily lives, there are people who earn meager salaries but still are confident of their futures who have counted days due to terminal cancers but are still confident of fulfilling their childhood dreams. If those people base their confidence in current situations, they are doomed to live gloomy and sad lives, for the perception of oneself has an enormous impact on what they will do in their daily life. Therefore, confidence is built from within instead of external factors.Secondly, despite that people always are in lack of something, they are likely to learn and build confidence step by step. No matter how average they are, they have achieved something in their lives to date and have strengths that they are not aware of. Tragically, human beings are alwaysin pursuit of what they want, but neglect what they have possessed. This also explains why they base their confidence on external factors. Because those external factors only exist in their mind in the near future, they are not real and solid. When people determine to set the journey to build confidence and carry things through by basing their confidence on what they have achieved and their strengths, no one can take it away, for they are real and solid. Gradually, confidence is build on and success is readily available, which will in return make people more confident. In sum, confidence is built from within instead of from external factors. People can learn to be confident by appreciating what they have achieved and their unique strengths. In this sense, confidence should not be affected by external factors such as fame, wealth, power, and etc.Topic 42 Delivery Ability Matters or the Contents? In college, it is claimed that students are given the right to select their courses in line with their personal preferences. But, in actuality, college students have to take some compulsory courses and some required selective courses. On those occasions, professors will find in their lectures students are absent-minded and hence interactions with students in class can not be easily achieved. Some people think that if professors are eloquent enough and have excellent delivery ability, their class will be interesting. For these students, the contents of professors’ lectures seem less important. However, we can not simply assume that which one is more important than the other. We should make specific analysis.Firstly, what matters is undoubtedly the contents for students. In compulsory courses or selective courses, students are required to acquire basic knowledge or want to learn what interests them. It is ridiculous to suspect that professors are disqualified. When professors can stand in front of students and are giving lectures, they are experienced and know more than students after years of research and teaching. For college students, they are required to attentively listen to professors and take notes so that they can improve themselves. In this sense, when students are busy absorbing what professors are instructing in class, they will become less fussy about professors’ delivery skills.Secondly, for professors, it is their responsibility to have a full preparation for lectures and to deliver effectively the contents of theirlectures to student. While the contents can fulfill students’ needs, excellent delivery skills will arouse students’ interest and hold their attention for a long time. Given the fact that students can not select their favorite courses according to their own interests and preferences, professors should make more efforts to prepare for lectures. Of course, each professor has formed his own style after years of teaching. But students in different periods have different characters and needs; professors can not simply apply their styles to all students. While students in the past might regard professors’ delivery style funny, current students are likely to dislike the style and consider it outdated and manipulative. On all accounts, as we can reach different conclusion from different perspectives, we can not simply determine delivery ability mattersmore than the contents or vice verse. While interesting teaching styles and content-loaded contents make professors popular among students, college students should not forget that they are required to acquire knowledge in class.Topic 41 The Relationship between Historical Grandeur and theFuture GreatnessGiven to the humiliating history of last two centuries, Chinese people always make efforts to build a powerful China. In the recent debate over the rise of China, some grass-root scholars argue that since China had achieved grandeur in ancient times, Chinese people are likely to lead the world again. The logic seems plausible, but is there any causal relationship between historical grandeur and China’s future greatness?Personally, I do not agree with this opinion. Firstly, the argument assumes that they can predict the future by finding evidence in the course of history. This mistake was criticized by Karl Popper in his influential book The Open Society and Its Enemies. In the book, he lenientlessly attacks ’historicism’,which means an approach to make historical predictions by discovering the patterns that underlie the evolution of history. In other words, precedent can not be used to explain what will happen in the future. In China’s case, undoubtedly, it reached the historical peak in Tang Dynasty. At that time, China was preponderant in the world, for no countries could successfully challenge its superiority. Now consider the world situation at that time. The world was separated by oceans, mountains, and deserts, for the communications means were soretarded that China enjoyed a relatively safe environment except the threats from neighboring countries. Nowadays, is it reasonable to predict that China’s greatness in the future is based on Tang Dynasty’s preponderance when the world is becoming smaller and more intermingled?Secondly, indicative of finding evidence in the course of history is China’s current weakness. Though China has surpassed Germany as the third largest economy, its per capita income still ranks in the developing country category. There is still a wide gap between China and the developed countries in terms of science and technology, education, military strength, and etc. Given that China is still a developing country, it is understandable that we can gain inspiration from the historical grandeur, but we can not use it as evidence to support our goodwill. What matters a great China in the future is the efforts we are making at present. In conclusion, we can see that there is no causal relationship between China’s grand history and its future. Historical grandeur can only serve as inspiration to urge us to make more efforts. As one proverb goes, many hands make light work. Chinese people will build a great nation in the future with combined efforts.Topic 40 The Importance of Hope in One’s LifeThere are many occasions in our lives on which we may feel like giving up, such as accidents, losing the beloved one, terminal illness, failing in an important exam, losing a job, and so on. Those life changing events can strike us without warning, oftentimes several at a time, seemingly layer upon layer, weighing us down. It seems that the seas of life are so rough and stormy that we are likely to get weary trying to keep our little boat from sinking. However, if we have hopes, we will not let those life changing events get the best of us and succumb to helplessness. Firstly, though hope is not an objective existence, it can arouse optimistic feelings for the future. As many psychologists’ research indicates, reflecting on one’s failures is generally good, but when it takes too much time, it is dangerous, for it soon becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that will quickly break every slice of confidence that we have in ourselves. That is how those who do not have hopes deal with these ups and downs. However, if people have hopes and always look forward to the future, they are able to envision a subjective picture of brightness in their mind, and take different measures to live a happy life.Secondly, having a hope helps people get rid of doubts and fears of day-to-day life and the challenges they must overcome to stay on an even kee. This can be best illustrated in clinics. Medical practitioners are always sensitive to the effects of their words so that their words might be acceptable to state the facts in such a way that they do not take away all possibility of hope. Even if the patient does die, the time that he or she is given will be spent better if the patient has been allowed some hope, as opposed to spending the remaining lifetime in a state of perpetual fear that each day is supposed to be the last.On all accounts, indicative of having a hope is the optimism of our lives. So long as we still have hopes in our heart, we will always look forward to the future. Hope can also help us remove doubts and fears in our daily lives. In any sense, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things”, as Andy Dufresne said in the Shawshank Redemption.。

英语专业八级写作背诵范文第10篇:运气在事业成功中的作用【题目】"When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success." Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.【范文】The Role of Luck in SuccessIt has been said that when people succeed, it is because of hard work and that luck has nothing to do with success. Although I believe that hard work is very important and is the surest way to success for most people, I must disagree with this statement. It cannot be denied that luck often plays an important role in success. For example, many important discoveries have been made by accident. There have been many cases of researchers and inventors making major breakthroughs while they were actually trying to solve another problem or create a different device. Furthermore, there is something to be said for simply being in the right place at the right time-perhaps meeting someone by chance who can offer a good job or rare opportunity. And of course, there are the rare examples of gamblers and lottery winners who beat the odds and achieve sudden and unexpected success. While the influence of luck cannot be ignored, this is not to say that one should depend on it and ignore the value of hard work. If one is willing to work hard, I believe that success will eventually be achieved, with or without the added benefit of luck. Moreover, hard work is often an essential ingredient of luck because it enables one to take advantage of a lucky encounter. If the scientist has not worked hard to develop his knowledge and skills, he may not recognize that lucky breakthrough when it comes along. Therefore, my suggestion is not to count on luck to bring you success. Instead, work hard and keep your eyes open for that lucky opportunity.英语专业八级写作背诵范文第5篇:如何看待在校大学生打工【英文范文】In some countries, teenagers have jobs while they are still students. Do you think this is a good idea? Support your opinion by using specific reasons and details. In many countries it is common for teenagers to take part-time jobs while they are still in high school, while in other societies this is virtually unheard of. In the latter situation, students are expected to spend all of their time on their studies and consider schoolwork their "job". In my opinion, students benefit more from a more balanced lifestyle, which may include working at a part-time job. Therefore, I believe that it is a good idea for students to work while studying. While it is true that a student's most important goal must be to learn and to do well at his studies, it does not need to be the only goal. In fact, a life which consists of only study is not balanced and may cause the student to miss out on other valuable learning experiences. In addition to bringing more balance to a student's life, part-time work can broaden his range of experience. He will havethe opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and will be faced with a wider variety of problems to solve. Furthermore, work helps a student to develop greater independence, and earning his own pocket money can teach him how to handle his finances. Finally, a part-time job can help a student to develop a greater sense of responsibility, both for his own work and for that of the team he works with. For all of these reasons, I firmly believe that most students would benefit from taking a part-time job while they are in high school. Of course, they must be careful not to let it take up too much of their time because study is still their primary responsibility. In sum, living a balanced life is the best way to be successful.英语专业八级写作背诵范文第6篇:小汽车的利与弊Advantages and disadvantages of private carsWith the fantastic spur both in industry and in economy in China, the number of people who own private cars is on the rise. Some people have bought cars of their own, and others are planning to buy cars. But there have been two quite different views on this phenomenon. Some claim that there are many advantages brought about by cars. First, the automobile industry provides jobs for countless workers and strong support for other industries. Second, if conditions permit, owning a car can make us work more efficiently. Finally, life will become more convenient. A car allows one to move freely and with a car there is no need to wait for the bus in the cold or under the burning sun. However, others strongly object to the increase in developing private cars. They hold that automobiles will give rise to a series of problems. In the first place, as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. Next, private cars contr123te to traffic congestion so greatly that the advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled out by the frustration caused by traffic jams. The last problem is the increasing number of car accidents that have killed and will kill a lot of people in a friction of a second. In my opinion, although automobiles have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of our society, they also bring us numerous troubles such as more serious environmental pollution, more traffic accidents and more 123rgy consumption. They drink up huge amounts of fuel and throw out huge amounts of pollutants. Traffic accidents kill thousands and thousands of people each year and cripple more. Jams waste our precious time. Therefore I am against developing private cars.英语专业八级写作背诵范文第7篇:每天养成存钱习惯的好处【题目】Is it better to enjoy your money when you earn it or is it better to save your money for some time in the future? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.【范文】The Advantages of Saving MoneyEveryone must work to live, but many people are fortunate enough to make more money than they immediately need. What should they do with this extra income? While it is tempting for people to spend it all on things they desire, I believe it is better to save at least a portion of the extra income for the future.By saving money, people give themselves more security. They cannot predict the future; perhaps one day they will be jobless. At a time like this their savings can spare them a great deal of suffering and help to see them through the hard time. In addition, saving money allows people to build up a larger sum. They can then buy something more worthwhile than the small things they can but if they spend the money right away. For example, they may be able to buy a house with their savings. Finally, the practice of saving helps people develop the habit of setting goals and planning for their future. In this way they are bound to lead more meaningful and successful lives. Most people would like to enjoy their money immediately. Nobody likes to wait for the things that he wants. However, if we learn to save our money, we can gain more advantages in the future. We will lead more secure and, thus, happier lives. We will also be able to buy the things we truly want but cannot afford right now.英语专业八级写作背诵范文第8篇:书本知识与实际经验【题目】It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?【范文】Book Knowledge vs. ExperienceKnowledge can be acquired from many sources. These include books, teachers and practical experience, and each has its own advantages. The knowledge we gain from books and formal education enables us to learn about things that we have no opportunity to experience in daily life. We can study all the places in the world and learn from people we will never meet in our lifetime, just by reading about them in books. We can also develop our analytical skills and learn how to view and interpret the world around us in different ways. Furthermore, we can learn from the past by reading books. In this way, we won’t repeat the mistakes of others and can build on their achievements.Practical experience, on the other hand, can give us more useful knowledge. It is said that one learns best by doing, and I believe that this is true, whether one is successful or not. In fact, I think making mistakes is the best way to learn. Moreover, if one wants to make new advances, it is necessary to act. Innovations do not come about through reading but through experimentation. Finally, one can apply the skills and insights gained through the study of books to practical experience, making an already meaningful experience more meaningful. However, unless it is applied to real experiences, book knowledge remains theoretical and, in the end, is useless. That is why I believe that knowledge gained from practical experience is more important than that acquired from books.【参考译文】书本知识与实际经验获得知识的来源有很多,其中包括书本、老师,以及实际经验,而每一种都有其优点。

英专八级写作背诵范文选(新东方内部资料)1.On Open PolicyThe open policy means that our country is open to investment, trade and technical and economic cooperation with other countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. The purpose of open policy is to acquire advanced technology, management skills to serve our socialist construction so as to promote the realization of the four modernizations. We must adhere to the open policy. Because economic relations between states today have become increasingly close, and no country can possibly advance behind close doors. Only in this way, can we gradually close the gap between our country and the developed countries.Through the implementation of policy, we can learn advanced technology and managerial expertise from abroad; make full use of the foreign capitals to set up great enterprises; absorb useful and healthy ideas and new knowledge of the modern civilization; and broaden our views and raise our level of competence.2. The place of Science and Technology in Modern Life.Human life can not continue without science and technology. For many years, human society has developed with the advance of science and technology while the development of science and technology has in turn brought the process to mankind. So the life we are living now is more civilized than that of our fore fathers. The development of science and technology have brought about many changes in people's life. For example, the invention of television and space rocket have opened a new era for mankind. Through the use of TV people can hear the sound and learn the events happening thousands of miles away. Owing to the invention of spaceship and rocket, the dream of man's landing on the moon has now come true.Science and technology also play an important role in our socialist construction. We may say, our socialist construction is just like a skyscraper, while science and technology are its base. Without the base, the skyscraper can't be built. Therefore, we should try our best to contribute to the development of science and technology so as to provide a more solid base to build our country.3. Importance of EducationChina, as a developing country, is determined to catch up with and even surpass the developed ones. I think that one of the best possible ways to do so is to give first priority(优先)to the development of culture, science and especially education. In modern times, when science and technology are making great progress, the education of the work force is of primary importance. Moreover, many of the success in advanced countries have demonstrated that a nation 's prosperity mainly depends on the quality of its labour force, namely those who have been well educated. In a developing country such as China, our investment in culture, education and science, and especially elementary education, must enjoy top priority. This is crucial(决定性的)for China to catch up with the developed nations in today's surging(汹涌的) waves of technological revolution. Otherwise, the gap between China and advanced countries will be widened rather than bridged.4. Air PollutionAir pollution is one of the major problems of the modern world. A great deal of energy is needed to run the factories of modern industrial nations. Automobile, trains, planes and busses need energy, too. Nearly all of this energy is produced by burning fuels. The burning produces wastes, some of which remain in the air, causing air pollution.Scientists are finding ways to stop air pollution especially in big industrial areas and densely-populated cities. They are studying new ways of generating electricity that may be less damaging to the environment. In the meantime, many power plants are being modernized to give off less polluted material. Also, engineers try to design and locate new power plants to do minimum damage to the environment. However, it may be that we still have a long way to go before we have a "clean" world. Nearly all of the countries are trying hard to prevent and control air pollution. There indeed seems to be no end to tasks that environmentalists will be required to do. People will continually find new ways to control pollution. 5. Environmental ProtectionToday the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources and at the same time polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, life on earth cannot survive.Concerned people have made some progress in environmental protection. Governments of many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop environmental pollution.Still more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. People should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of birth control, to conserve(保存)our natural resources and recycle (再循环)our products. We are sure that we can have a better and cleaner place in the future.6. AutomobilesAutomobiles, as a product of modern civilization, have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of human society. Industry needs automobiles for farming as well as transportation. Every day, automobiles drive people to and from work. On weekends automobiles take families for joyful outings. And during holiday seasons, automobiles fill the highways everywhere, even in remote areas. It could be said that the wheels of automobiles move society forward. But automobiles have also given rise to a series of problems. For example, cities are overcrowded with automobiles. They create a lot of noise and trafficaccidents which disable(伤残)or kill many people each year. Worst of all perhaps is the air pollution caused by the exhaust gases produced by automobiles. Some of the gases are highly toxic(有毒的)and a serious health hazard.7. ComputerThe computer is widely used in all fields of society. Today, wherever you go, you will find computers being used. For example, computers are used in universities, large corporations, and small offices, etc. It has even entered the homes of ordinary people. As it is able to store and process a large amount of information, the computer bring about great convenience and high efficiency to people of all walks of life.Computers can help people in different ways. For example, computer help scientists in analyzing data and doing complex calculation. For another example, computers are made use of by engineers in designing a plane, or a spaceship. Besides, computers may also play a great role in helping children with their lesson. Whatever you are doing, you many find computer a useful aid. However, the computer must be designed and instructed by man. What is more, it is true that computers can make decisions, but they need detailed instructions and programs prepared by humans to operate. Therefore, the computer can never replace the human brain.8. TravellingIt is exciting to visit different places. As you travel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. Besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. Finally, you can get to know the customs and living habits of the local people. Today people are so fond of travelling that tourism has become one of the faster growing industries in most countries. The main reason why people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, having worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a widened trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. For another example, spending an annual holiday travelling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not have much of an opportunity to be away from their homelands. When people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder. Travelling is also one of the best means for learning. You may have read or heard about something but you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. Seeing is believing. Furthermore, if you area careful observer, you can learn much during your travel about the geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. No matter how well educated you are, there is always a lot for you to learn through travelling. The knowledge acquired from travel, as you will have found in your life, is no less valuable than that from any influential reference book.9. The World Population ExplosionThe human race has experienced a consistent increase in population since the beginning of its history. Famine and disease have done little to offset(抵消)this steady increase. Too many people are added annually to the population of the world. So both the causes of population increase and the results of having more people are worth careful study. Culture evolution is the major factor responsible for population increase. Early in human development, people invented tools to hunt animals. Later they built shelters to protect themselves. Step by step, they made life easier. As a result, fewer died from natural forces, such as harsh climate and disease. In the past, when population grew, there was unexplored territory to inhabit. But now, almost all the habitable land has been explored. The world's population may reach 8.7 billion in 2033. It is clear that world population is a serious issue that needs careful attention. Human beings are unique to solve problems through cultural evolution.(发展)Facing the world population explosion in the near future. We must carry out the birth control program in order to save the mankind and save the world. 10. Opening-door Policy is the Only Way to Make China StrongModern Chinese history leads us to the conclusion that socialism, not capitalism is best for China. But how a socialist China should look at capitalism and more importantly, make use of the better side of capitalism for its own advantage is of vital(至关)importance to the country. As far as our country's economic construction is concerned, taking advantage of the part of capitalism that is useful to us means we need to develop foreign trade, introduce advanced technology and better management, and make use of foreign funds. It also means we can absorb some of the economic theories, and make use of those economic policies, methods and measures that comply with(遵循)the law of mass production and a commodity economy.By opening our windows wider to the outside world, people can learn more about other peoples and learn to make sensible judgments. Absorbing the better part of the cultures of other people to enrich ourselves is the best way to safeguard our socialist culture. So taking advantage of capitalism and stepping up economic reforms is the only way to make China strong. Closing the county to international exchanges will only keep it weak.11. Choosing an OccupationEvery one faces the problem of choosing an occupation after graduation from college or university, which plays a vital role in his life. An appropriate occupation makes a man work with zest(热情)and vigor, as well as contribute to his country. To make a wise choice, two important things should be taken into consideration. One is the interest, the other, the demands of people and society. Only if the two aspects are connected, can a man show his talent and ability to the best advantage. If the two conflict, the former should be under the latter, for the people's interests are more important than the individual's.In regard to my choice in the future, I am fond of learning foreign languages; what is more, with the implementation of the Open-Door Policy, exchangebetween home and abroad in economy and culture has been growing significantly, thus I'm determined to be a qualified interpreter.12. The Brain and the ComputerSome recent developments in the computer industry make scientists predict that the gap between human beings and machines will be closed about the year 20000.To understand the significance of this prediction let us compare the human brain with existing computers. The brain consumes electrical energy at the rate of 25 watts and occupies a volume of one tenth of a cubic foot. The brain houses between 10 billion and 100 billion items of information. Every brain cell is directly connected to many other cells. As a result, the cells in which information is stored can communicate with thousands of other cells. However, the computer consumes 1000,000 watts of electrical power and occupies hundreds of cubic feet of space. Its million items of immediately accessible information. In contrast, the computer memory is like a cell of pigeonholes, with no thinking capacity and no connections elsewhere. In a word, the electronic brains are hopelessly inadequate in comparison with the human brains. 13. Health and LifeAs the saying goes, you don’t know what happiness is until you lose it’ you don’t know what health is until you are ill. “Health is of vital importance to life” sounds like a cliche to ev eryone, but it is absolutely true. The negligence of the delicate balance of your body and soul, the harmful habits such as smoking, excessive drinking and burning mid-night oil will catch up with you someday. How many big plans are interrupted by bad health! Even a normal life is unimaginable without the guarantee of health. How to keep fit is an eternal topic of diversity and controversy. Regardless of all the different suggestions poured from all kinds of sources, one should do at least two things for him/herself. First, hold an active and optimistic attitude toward life and maintain a mental well-being. Second, live a regular life and keep a balanced diet. Anyway, a healthy life is within reach when you begin to adjust your mind and body.14. Energy ResourcesChina is rich in various energy resources. Coal and petroleum, for instance, are two major ones. They are essential in developing the country's industry, science and technology. China has done a great deal in the past few decades to raise its output of coal and petroleum.Three energy resources are being used up rapidly, With the building of four modernization, new industrial and science projects are springing up like bamboo shoots after rain. They are all big consumers of energy resources. Besides there has been considerable waste in the utilization of these resources. To avoid an energy crisis in the future, the government must take certain measures. First, it should let people know the importance of saving energy. Second, efforts should be made to develop new energy resources, such as solar energy, geothermal(地热)energy and so on. We have reason to be optimistic in this respect.15. CompetitionCompetition makes people original and creative. It very necessary to compete if human society wants to advance. (Even animals compete for survival.) Without it, we would become lazy and nobody would rake any responsibility. When three monks live together, there will be no drinking water. This Chinese proverb vividly describes why China's productivity was so low before Mr Deng came to power. At that time, we had the so-called planned economy. There was no competition at all. So neither farmers nor workers worked hard. China was on the edge of collapse.Competition can stimulate people to try their best to do anything. For example, in 100-meter race, each sportsman runs as quickly as possible, trying to win the champion. The same things happen in our society and in our daily life. If a company wants to surpass others, it must compete with them. It must raise its efficiency. All the companies doing this will no doubt benefit the whole society and the whole human race.Being a student, I must compete with other students in our studies. I must study hard in all the fields so that I can be a useful man when I enter the society after graduation.16.Students’ Part-time jobsThere are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. For instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing. It enables him to be independent and builds up his self-confidence. Therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society. As everything has two sides, the disadvantages can’t be ignored. Part-time jobs cut into students’ study time; some even become so preoccupied with making money that they ca ‘t focus their attention on studying. In the end, the students may fall behind or fail in their studies. In my opinion, students can choose to take up a job according to their own situation. The most important thing is for him to keep a good balance, put his study on top of the list and assign an adequate amount of time to it.17.Wealth and HappinessEverybody wants to get wealth. In today’s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person’s success and c apability. Many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can but nice, large apartments in nice neighborhood; with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life.In my opinion, people cannot do anything without money, but money is not everything. What money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If you are kind enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. With it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will and to your own happiness. If you want money just for your own needs, you’ll never be satisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people, only then can money be the source of your happiness. 18.IdealsEveryone has his ideals. A businessman wishes to make greater profit; a farmer expects bumper harvests; a student tries to learn more and better. And everyone strives, with more or less effort, to realize his ideal. One should be sensible about whether his ideal is well founded or not. If it is, one has to plan and work hard for its realization. Effort, skill and persistence are all necessary. And very often, one has to get help from others, including advice and support in one form or another. My ideal is to become a doctor, It is said that the field of medicine is a well-paid profession, but I take it as a lofty profession entrusted with saving people’s lives. To realize my ideal I have concentrated on laboratory work to develop the analytical skills necessary to become a qualified doctor. I am sure I will realize my ideal if I persevere in this pursuit.19.Popular Sports in ChinaSports are flourishing in china now. More and more people are willing to take part in sports of different kinds, such as table-tennis, football, volleyball, and so on. Every year there are many matches played on the city, provincial or national level. Sports are no longer limited to a few professional players.Early in the morning people may be seen doing exercise. Martial arts (like Chinese boxing or swordplay) which formerly were cultivated for self-defense, now have become a form of physical exercise and are practiced in parks, streets, gardens, or on campuses. In addition young and old people are also often seen running in order to build up their bodies.China promotes sports to enhance the physical condition of its people; she is formulating policies to provide encouragement of this activity. She awards prizes to the excellent players for the best records both in china and the world. In the world the Chinese have become a strong people instead of “the weaklings of East Asia”.20.Is Failure a Bad Thing?Failure is what often happens. It is everywhere in our life. Students may fail in exams, scientists may fail in their research work, and athletes may fail in competitions.Although failure happens to everyone, attitudes towards failure are various. Some people don’t think their failure is a very important thing at all. So they pay no attention to it. As a result, they will have the same failure a period later. Some people think themselves are fools and lose their hearts in everything after they get a failure. Consequently, they spend their time and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought.Other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentioned above. Instead of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. After hard work, they will be successful in the end. It is said that failure is the mother of success. Success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawing lesson from our failures. In my opinion, failure is not a bad thing, the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.21.Modernization of Family LifeWith the rapid development of the society, family life is becoming modernized. Years ago, people considered owing radios, sewing machines, watches and bicycles as being modernized. But in recent years, almost all families have TV sets, refrigerators and washing machines. It is very common to see people ride motorcycles or even drive private cars and more and more families have telephones, computers and air-conditioners.The modernization of family life brings us convenience and comfort. One may enjoy TV or radio programs, communicate with his friends through telephone or work with his computer while his washing machine, refrigerator and air-conditioners are running. And by car or motorcycle one can quickly reach wherever he wants to go.In spite of this, these modern facilities also bring us disadvantages. For example, radiation from TV sets and computers is harmful to our health; improper driving of cars and motorcycles becomes the major cause of traffic accidents. The quietness of a family is often disturbed by a falsedialing or unwelcome phone call. But it is believed that these disadvantages will be disposed of with the improvement of modernization and our life will be more healthy and more comfortable.。

Topic 1Should We Ban Internet Slang in News and Formal Documents? The Internet slang words have become very popular among young people. They use terms such as “CU” for “see you” and “PK” for “competition”. But now the Internet slang terms are forbidden in official documents, news broadcasts and textbooks in Shanghai. The public hold different views on the regulation. Some people think such kind of terms will rock our traditional language. But others say the terms are vivid and accurate. There is no need to ban them. As far as I am concerned, we should not simply ban the Internet slang terms, but distinguish the good from the bad, and guide people to use the language appropriately. Some people hold the negative opinion about the Internet slang terms. They think the young people are in the critical period of learning the knowledge and forming their values. For them, it is very important to use the standard language. In the virtue world, they use language at their will. If such kind of language is used in news and formal documents, it will do harm to the healthy development of language, even to our tradition and culture.Their worries are justified, but the language has its own regulations as it is developing. As a flexible language, the Internet language has the feature of newness simplicity and humor, which can help to make the text vivid and interesting. This kind of language is with the feature of the times. In the early 20th century, Hun Shi and Chen Dixie advocated to use the classical Chinese. At first, it was criticized seriously. But the reality proved the worth of the movement. In the development of language, there will be new words and terms, some of which are living, and some are not.The good Internet slang terms will help our language become better and richer. As for some not-so-good ones, they will be washed out naturally. Some Internet slang terms have the same form with the characters, and the meaning they have are relatively stable. So they are very likely to enter the classical Chinese. So we should not factitiously ban the new-born words and terms in news and documents. The fittest will survive. In conclusion, we should not ban the Internet slang terms in news and officialdocuments. If the vigorous Internet slang terms can stand the test of time, they will be accepted at last.Topic 2Should Universities Lower Admission Requirements forCelebrities? It is not rare to hear that some universities lower their admission requirements for celebrity students, such as a pop singer or an Olympic medal winner. Some people think it is unfair to other students, and the universities are utilitarian. But others hold the opinion that the celebrities can’t be blamed for their wanting to go to universities to improve themselves. They make contributions or have talents, so it is justified for universities to accept them with a relatively low requirement. From my point of view, universities should reasonably lower the admission requirements for celebrities, that is, although the requirements lowered, there must still be a principle. On the one hand, it is of great significance for celebrities to be enrolled into universities. Take the Olympic winners for example. They started training since they were little children. They contribute their boundless wisdom an d painstaking efforts to raising the level of our country’s sport competition. Lowering the admission requirements for them is the encouragement and support to their great achievements. It is also beneficial for them to do more contribution to the society after they retire if they receive high education and acquire more knowledge. What’s more, it is a way to combine the high education with competition training, and promote the career of sports. The celebrities make great contributions or have special talents. The universities should consider the situation fully and lower the admission requirements accordingly. On the other hand, not all the celebrities can be accepted into universities. The standard can be lowered but can’t be lowered without limit. The celebrities with primary school education or junior middle school education should not be admitted to universities, because the high education is after senior high middle school. And the celebrities have to finish all the courses and pass all the exams. In my opinion, two principles should be considered. One is the education of senior middle school. The other is the credits required by the university. That’s to say, the celebrities should pay more attention to the study of knowledge, and they must complete their studies. To sum up, we should be sensible about lowering admission requirements for celebrities. For the celebrities who make contributions and have the capacity, universities should provide chances and give them special requirements. But for those who are not suitable, the universities should not lower the standard without limit.Topic 3Why Do People Like to Try Their Luck on Lottery? When you walk on the street, you may see a lot of people rushing into some shops or gathering together buying lotteries, such as welfare lottery tickets, sports lottery tickets and so on. Perhaps you will be shocked by their enthusiasm for such kind of things. Some even spend a large amount of money on them in order to increase the possibility of winning the prize. If the lotteries fail their expectations, they get so disappointed that they may curse or even beat themselves. I think people try their luck on lottery for several reasons.First of all, they try their luck because they want to win a large sum of money with just a little effort. They may think their idea is justified and the dream is not far away. They cherish the hope of getting rich overnight. As is reported by CCTV, a man in Shandong province becomes a criminal after his failure of trying his luck. He has spent all his money on the lottery. He now becomes homeless and leads a miserable life. As far as I am concerned, trying one’s luck on lottery is like gambling. You do not know the rate of winning back your money but you cannot resist the lure of having a try, which is, almost surely, disastrous. Very few people can succeed in this business.Secondly, the society is getting more commercial and material than before. People work just for more money. In other words, some of them prefer money to morals. They are thinking of some shortcut to get rich in the society. I think the social climate exerts a subtle influence on their psychology. We need to clean the social climate for a better humane environment. We should educate people to earn their living by honest labor rather than trying the luck on lottery. Finally, the popularity of buying lottery is due to the gap between the rich and poor. The income gap has become a reason for this activity. The rich becomes richer and richer, while the poor becomes poorer and poorer. This has stimulated some people to try the luck on the lottery. To sum up, we should discourage people from buying the lottery. Meanwhile, we should better our social welfare system so that more people can get rich.Topic 4Should Laotian Be Preserved in Market-oriented Economy?Laotian is not only the commercial phenomenon, but also the history in miniature. It is popular for its unique arts and crafts. However, some of these enterprises have become outdated or are operating in red due to a rigid conventional thinking, loose management or overstaffing. People have different opinions about whether the Laotian should be preserved or not. As far as I’m concerned, the critical point is not only to remain but also to preserve and develop the Laotian. Laotian is important to the traditional culture and the national commerce. As a time-honored brand, Laotian enjoys the extensive reputation in the society. It is of golden opinion, and carries the trust of the customers. Moreover, it is the precise non-material cultural heritage. The city without Laotian will lose the unique scene as a famous historic city.In the market-oriented economic society, Laotian satisfies the emotional need of people for the national culture. But it cannot be denied that now Laotian is paying their way. Affected by the market-oriented economy, Laotian is taking the shine off. The out-dated concepts, old-fashioned products and backward management are all the factors for the fall of Laotian. As for the fact, we should not only remain the Laotian, but also have to preserve and develop it.First, the support system of Laotian should be built up. The advanced technology, automatic intellectual property rights and modern organization are key points in the development of Laotian. On the basis of keeping its traditional features, it should work out new products, which are more suitable for the modern society, so as to extend the market share. Second, Laotian should have the priority in the policy and finance. It is the most important embodiment of a historic city. So In the urban planning, the original location should be preserved. And the government would finance them to improve their technology and equipments. Third, it is suggested that Laotian should be preserved as the intangible assets of the country. In this way, Laotian will do well to the cultural landscape as well as develop its own commercial function. In conclusion, Laotian is the carrier of the traditional culture and arts. It’s a s ymbol of the national history. We should preserve it and use effective ways to develop it. It is not only the demand of the market, but also the requirement of the culture.Topic 5My View on Popular Stars Migrating to Foreign CountriesIn recent years, many popular stars are reported to have migrated to foreign countries. For example, a reputable actress last year swore under the national flag of Singapore to become its citizen. She is claimed to have a Singaporean husband. Although those popular stars have the natural right to choose their nationalities, and there are various reasons for them to make such decisions, once they have migrated to foreign countries, they are no more citizens of PRC. While some people hold that it is their natural right to migrate to any foreign country, others categorize those stars in the group of traitors in peacetime. As far as I am concerned, their naturalization from China to foreign nation is not acceptable. Firstly, I agree with many observers that those stars have intentions of evading taxes. According to the relevant articles in tax regulations, stars that have changed their Chinese citizenship will be entitled non-citizen taxpayer status provided the duration and residence meet required standards. This policy indicates that their earnings outside China are tax deductible. Besides, since these stars are no longer Chinese citizens, they will receive preferential treatments such as tax reduction within certain period if they establish their own businesses in China. Though there are no sound evidences on the relationship between tax evasion and migration, we are still justified to claim that tax evasion has been taken into consideration by those stars based on various news coverage and columnists’ observations.Secondly, many stars take advantage of migration to have more babies. Due to the implementation of family control policy in China, the majority of families shall only have one child. Once they are still citizens of PRC, they are not permitted to have a second child. However, there are no such family control policies in many foreign countries. In some countries, birth rates are on the decrease to such an extent that the authorities have to encourage young parents to have more babies by providing additional welfare programs. This point can be illustrated by a famous director’s case. He currently holds the passport issued by the government of the United States and fathers two lovely sons.On all accounts, those stars migrate to foreign countries for their own interests. But they should not forget the fact that it is China that gives them the opportunities to become reputable. In return, it is their responsibility to repay their motherland, instead of deserting China by changing their nationality in their own interests.Topic 6The Validity of College RankingsThe publication of college rankings each year would draw increasing attention from interested people. Those people include reporters, college administrators and faculty, alumni, parents, and high school students. Together with other popular guidebooks, college rankings feature data on the overall universities and colleges in China. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet once stated that “what is in a name? That which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet.” We can ask a similar question over the college rankings: what is in a number? Some scholars warn that college rankings use objective measures to evaluate subjective considerations so that they can only tell a prospective college student a limited amount. In my opinion, we should take several rankings into consideration to evaluate a specific college’s place in the ranking, instead of only relying on one ranking.Firstly, to decide whether college rankings give a college a fair shake, it is crucial to look at the methodology of the ranking system. While one system may conclude peer assessment, retention rate, faculty resources, student selectivity, and financial resources, another system may lay its emphasis on the number of famous alumni, the student evaluation of professors and the evaluation of college students. Accordingly, the same university may rank top in one publication of one ranking system, but be reduced to the average university category in another ranking system. Generally speaking, based on the same criteria, the rankings can objectively reflect the strength of a certain university, but it can not tell the whole story of a college. Besides, many universities are characterized by their unique disciplines. We can not simply reach conclusion that a music and drama university is worse than a technological university according to their places in the ranking system.Secondly, college rankings are likely to be manipulated, which inevitably reduces their authority and trust ability. As a president from a famous university revealed, one college ranking compiling organizationonce visited him and insinuated that if the president agreed to sponsor their organization, they could put the college in higher places of ranking. According to some news report, this phenomenon is not rare. Many universities have been invited to “corporate” with some ranking compiling organizations. Can we still believe that college rankings reflect the strength of some universities when some universities sponsor the compiling in exchange of higher places in the ranking? In a word, college rankings, an important means to evaluate universities, are based on different methodologies. As one methodology only focuses on certain aspects of higher learning, we have to consult with several ranking systems and then we can find out the whole story of A university. We should also be cautious about the manipulation behind the scenes.Topic 7Should Companies Only Focus on Experience? As one res earcher observed, “At present many companies do not trust new graduates, who may have learned mountains of theories but lack practical abilities.” For many companies, they would like to rank working experience as top requirement in their recruitment programs. But, as a matter of fact, college students have spent years in taking compulsory courses and selective courses, how can they accumulate required experience in college? One can not help wondering whether companies should lay their emphasis on experience when recruiting college graduates. As for me, companies’ focus on experience is short-sighted, and hence companies should not only lay stress on experience.Firstly, what lies behind their focus on experience is the motivation to cut expenditure in employee training. Another consideration is that experienced employees can produce immediate profits. For those employers, they are more interested in making money in the present than cultivating talents for the long-term benefits. They seem to lack long term strategies of company development. Generally speaking, prestigious companies that have lasted for a dozen years, even hundreds of years, always have a systematic plan for talents training. They would like to bear the burden of new employee training expenditure for the long-term benefits. How can we expect those companies that are apathetic to recruit college graduate to reap profits in the future without enough supply of talented employees?Secondly, while the recruitment of experienced employees can produce short-term profits, it is hard for those experienced employees to identify with the new companies’ culture, and therefore, companies have to suffer from high employee attrition rates. Companies’ cultural identities have been considered increasingly important to maximize productivity by holding both employees and employers together. Loyal employees are willing to stand by their companies in times of ups and downs. When employees frequently come and go, companies have to bear new hiring costs, costs of lost productivity, cost of knowledge, skills and contacts that the person who is leaving is taking with them out of the previous companies. Obviously, the total expenditure of recruitment of experienced employees in the long term is likely to transcend the expenditure of training loyal employees in the beginning. In sum, indicative of companies’ focus on experience is the motivation of producing immediate profits by cutting expenditure in training inexperienced college students. In the long run, companies are likely to bear more cost of high attrition rates. Therefore, companies should not only emphasize on experience and should give opportunities to college graduates so that they can reap long-term profits.Topic 8My View on Shanghais PhenomenonWhen new models of cell phones with a brand name are desirable for many customers who can not afford them, smart business men began to produce the latest models through imitation but charge only one third or half of the price of the real model. This kind of cell phones, or labeled Shanghais phones, undoubtedly, satisfies customers’ desire and rewards producers’ talents. Gradually, people label any commodities produced by imitation as Shanghais products. Those products include cell phones, digital cameras, laptop computers etc. Some companies even invite people who have similar appearance to popular stars to endorse on their products in Shanghais advertisements. Though those who produce Shanghais products can reap immediate profits, their products will gradually be eliminated from the market.Firstly, indicative of the Shanghais phenomenon is producers’ myopia. When a new model of certain product is in large demand, those speculative factory owners will seize the opportunity to manufacture similar products. Without investment in product research and advertisements, what Shanghaisproducers need to do is copy and then reaps immediate profits. Obviously, as those companies do not lay their emphasis on product research and marketing, they do not have the chance to reap profits in the long run. For those speculators, what matters is whether they can make money as soon and much as possible. When a new model becomes outdated and customers show less interest, inevitably, odds are against those Shanghais companies.Secondly, as part of Shanghais products would be exported to overseas markets, its low quality will do damage to the reputation of “Made in China”. In the market, Shanghais products are usually charged less than the real ones. But why would those salespeople like to sell their products at such a low price? Any rational customers can hence conclude that their quality is not guaranteed. In the long run, foreign customers would realize that products made in China are cheap and of low-quality. The moment they encounter products made in China when shopping, they would pause for a second and then decide to choose products made in other countries. This is not an exaggeration. In Russia, due to the import of fake Chinese products in 1990s, Russian people have lost trust in Chinese products. In sum, though those speculative producers can make short-term profits, customers will gradually lose confidence in Shanghais products, which is to the detriment of reputation of “Made in China”. As a result, Shanghais phenomenon should be discouraged.Topic 9The Disadvantages of Big Class LearningOne of my friends complains to me about his relation with his professors saying that there is a far distance between the students and the faculties. As a matter of fact, this is not surprising. Due to the expanded enrollment of college students, many universities can not find enough faculties. It has been so common that hundreds of students crowd in a class listening to a professor. They seldom have enough time to communicate in private. As far as I am concerned, the big class learning has many disadvantages. First of all, the big class learning is by no means conducive to the development of the critical thinking of the students. The college education is still the elite education. Therefore, the quality of the graduates is very important. They need to be competent to get a decent job in the job market. The making and development of such qualities are done, most of the time, in classroom.Meanwhile, the professors are playing a crucial role in molding the soul of the students. The big class learning cannot manage such kind of tasks. Once the students study in a very big class, they may become very lazy or even play truant. As for the professors, they may not have so much time to talk with the students since they are so many. This may lead to the second disadvantage of the big class learning: the gap and distance between the two parties. Originally, the college campus is the place where the professors and the students enjoy the fun of doing research and pursuing the truth. They may work as one to contribute to the flowering of the scholarship. However, the fact is the students often feel that they are disconnected with their distinguished professors. The students cannot find their instructors during the time of need. The last disadvantage of the big class learning is that the whole education may get bad or even worse. The big class learning may cause the commercialization of the education, which will be a very serious problem. To sum up, the big class learning has more disadvantages than advantages. It will affect the quality of the graduates as well as the whole education cause in China. The effective measure to deal with it is to limit the enrollment of college students to make a better national education.。

The Power ofPerseveranceIn the journey of life, perseverance stands as a灯塔, guiding us through the stormy seas of challenges and difficulties. It is the invisible force that propels us towards our dreams, turning the impossible into possible. This essay aims to explore the essence of perseverance, its role in personal and professional success, and the strategies to cultivate this invaluable trait.Firstly, perseverance is the core of success. It is the driving force that keeps us going when faced with obstacles and setbacks. History is witness to the fact that the most outstanding achievements are often the result of relentless efforts and unwavering commitment. For instance, Thomas Edison's journey in inventing the light bulb was fraught with failures, yet he persevered and ultimately succeeded. His story teaches us that success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.Secondly, perseverance helps us build resilience and character. In the face of adversity, it is perseverancethat helps us stay afloat and emerge stronger. Thechallenges we overcome in life shape our character and make us more resilient. By persevering, we learn to adapt, to improvise, and to overcome, thus growing stronger and wiser with each passing day. Moreover, perseverance is a key ingredient in professional success. In any field, whether it is science, arts, or sports, the most successful individuals are those who never give up. They understand that success requires hard work, dedication, and consistent effort. By persevering, they are able to master their skills, refine their craft, and achieve excellence. However, cultivating perseverance is not an overnight task. It requires conscious effort and dedication. Here are a few strategies that can help us develop this valuable trait:1. Set clear and achievable goals: Having a clear goal gives us a sense of direction and purpose. It helps us stay focused and motivated, even when faced with difficulties.2. Break down tasks into smaller steps: By breaking down large tasks into smaller, manageable steps, we can approach them with less fear and more confidence. Thishelps us stay motivated and engaged, ensuring that we don't get overwhelmed by the size of the task.3. Embrace failures as learning opportunities:Failures are an inevitable part of the journey of success. Instead of viewing them as setbacks, we should embrace them as valuable learning opportunities. By analyzing our failures, we can identify our weaknesses and work on improving them.4. Seek support and encouragement: Having a support system of friends, family, or mentors can be a great source of encouragement and motivation. They can provide us with the necessary support and guidance, helping us stay on track and persevere in our efforts. In conclusion, perseverance is the key to unlocking our full potential and achieving our dreams. It is theinvisible force that propels us towards success, turning the impossible into possible. By cultivating perseverance and embedding it into our daily lives, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve anything we set our minds to. Let us remember that success is not final, failure is not fatal:It is the courage to continue that counts.。

11 Archaeology Archaeology is a source of history, not just a bumble auxiliary discipline. Archaeological data are historical documents in their own right, not mere illustrations to written texts, Just as much as any other historian, an archaeologist studies and tries to reconstitute the process that has created the human world in which we live - and us ourselves in so far as we are each creatures of our age and social environment. Archaeological data are all changes in the material world resulting from human action or, more succinctly, the fossilized results of human behavior. The sum total of these constitutes what may be called the archaeological record. This record exhibits certain peculiarities and deficiencies the consequences of which produce a rather superficial contrast between archaeological history and the more familiar kind based upon written records. Not all human behavior fossilizes. The words I utter and you hear as vibrations in the air are certainly human changes in the material world and may be of great historical significance. Yet they leave no sort of trace in the archaeological records unless they are captured by a dictaphone or written down by a clerk. The movement of troops on the battlefield may "change the course of history," but this is equally ephemeral from the archaeologist's standpoint. What is perhaps worse, most organic materials are perishable. Everything made of wood, hide, wool, linen, grass, hair, and similar materials will decay and vanish in dust in a few years or centuries, save under very exceptional conditions. In a relatively brief period the archaeological record is reduce to mere scraps of stone, bone, glass, metal, and earthenware. Still modern archaeology, by applying appropriate techniques and comparative methods, aided by a few lucky finds from peat-bogs, deserts, and frozen soils, is able to fill up a good deal of the gap.12 MuseumsFrom Boston to Los Angeles, from New York City to Chicago to Dallas, museums are either planning, building, or wrapping up wholesale expansion programs. These programs already have radically altered facades and floor plans or are expected to do so in the not-too-distant future. In New York City alone, six major institutions have spread up and out into the air space and neighborhoods around them or are preparing to do so.The reasons for this confluence of activity are complex, but onefactor is a consideration everywhere - space. With collections expanding, with the needs and functions of museums changing, empty space has become a very precious commodity.Probably nowhere in the country is this more true than at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which has needed additional space for decades and which received its last significant facelift ten years ago. Because of the space crunch, the Art Museum has become increasingly cautious in considering acquisitions and donations of art, in some cases passing up opportunities to strengthen its collections.Deaccessing - or selling off - works of art has taken on new importance because of the museum's space problems. And increasingly, curators have been forced to juggle gallery space, rotating one masterpiece into public view while another is sent to storage.Despite the clear need for additional gallery and storage space, however," the museum has no plan, no plan to break out of itsenvelope in the next fifteen years," according to Philadelphia Museum of Art's president.13 Skyscrapers and EnvironmentIn the late 1960's, many people in North America turned theirattention to environmental problems, and new steel-and-glass skyscrapers were widely criticized. Ecologists pointed out that a cluster of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lot capacities.Skyscrapers are also lavish consumers, and wasters, of electric power. In one recent year, the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New York City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120, 000 kilowatts-enough to supply the entirecity of Albany, New York, for a day.Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss(or gain)through a wall of half-inch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical masonry wall filled with insulation board. To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment, builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glazed panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare as well as heat gain. However, mirror-walledskyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.Skyscrapers put a severe strain on a city's sanitation facilities, too. If fully occupied, the two World Trade Center towers in New York City would alone generate million gallons of raw sewage each year-as much as a city the size of Stanford, Connecticut , which has a population of more than 109, 000.14 A Rare Fossil RecordThe preservation of embryos and juveniles is a rate occurrence in the fossil record. The tiny, delicate skeletons are usually scattered by scavengers or destroyed by weathering before they can be fossilized. Ichthyosaurs had a higher chance of being preserved than did terrestrial creatures because, as marine animals, they tended to live in environments less subject to erosion. Still, their fossilization required a suite of factors: a slow rate of decay of soft tissues, little scavenging by other animals, a lack of swift currents and waves to jumble and carry away small bones, and fairly rapid burial. Given these factors, some areas have become a treasury of well-preserved ichthyosaur fossils. The deposits at Holzmaden, Germany, present an interesting case for analysis. The ichthyosaur remains are found in black, bituminous marine shales deposited about 190 million years ago. Over the years, thousands of specimens of marine reptiles, fish and invertebrates have been recovered from these rocks. The quality of preservation is outstanding, but what is even more impressive is the number of ichthyosaur fossils containing preserved embryos. Ichthyosaurs with embryos have been reported from 6 different levels of the shale in a small area around Holzmaden, suggesting that a specific site was used by large numbers of ichthyosaurs repeatedly over time. The embryos are quite advanced in their physical development; their paddles, for example, are already well formed. One specimen is even preserved in the birth canal. In addition, the shale contains the remains of many newborns that are between 20 and 30 inches long. Why are there so many pregnant females and young at Holzmaden when they are so rare elsewhere? The quality of preservation is almost unmatched and quarry operations have been carried out carefully with an awareness of the value of the fossils. But these factors do not account for the interesting question of how there came to be such aconcentration of pregnant ichthyosaurs in a particular place very close to their time of giving birth.15 The Nobel AcademyFor the last 82years, Sweden's Nobel Academy has decided who will receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, thereby determining who will be elevated from the great and the near great to the immortal. But today the Academy is coming under heavy criticism both from the without and from within. Critics contend that the selection of the winners often has less to do with true writing ability than with the peculiar internal politics of the Academy and of Sweden itself. According to Ingmar Bjorksten , the cultural editor for one of the country's two major newspapers, the prize continues to represent "what people call a very Swedish exercise: reflecting Swedish tastes."The Academy has defended itself against such charges of provincialism in its selection by asserting that its physical distance from the great literary capitals of the world actually serves to protect the Academy from outside influences. This may well be true, but critics respond that this very distance may also be responsible for the Academy's inability to perceive accurately authentic trends in the literary world.Regardless of concerns over the selection process, however, it seems that the prize will continue to survive both as an indicator of the literature that we most highly praise, and as an elusive goal that writers seek. If for no other reason, the prize will continue to be desirable for the financial rewards that accompany it; not only is the cash prize itself considerable, but it also dramatically increases sales of an author's books.16. the war between Britain and FranceIn the late eighteenth century, battles raged in almost every corner of Europe, as well as in the Middle East, south Africa ,the West Indies, and Latin America. In reality, however, there was only one major war during this time, the war between Britain and France. All other battles were ancillary to this larger conflict, and were often at least partially related to its antagonist’ goals and strategies. France sought total domination of Europe . this goal was obstructed by British independence and Britain’s efforts throughout thecontinent to thwart Napoleon; through treaties. Britain built coalitions (not dissimilar in concept to today’s NATO) guaranteeing British participation in all major European conflicts. These two antagonists were poorly matched, insofar as they had very unequal strengths; France was predominant on land, Britain at sea. The French knew that, short of defeating the British navy, their only hope of victory was to close all the ports of Europe to British ships. Accordingly, France set out to overcome Britain by extending its military domination from Moscow t Lisbon, from Jutland to Calabria. All of this entailed tremendous risk, because France did not have the military resources to control this much territory and still protect itself and maintain order at home.French strategists calculated that a navy of 150 ships would provide the force necessary to defeat the British navy. Such a force would give France a three-to-two advantage over Britain. This advantage was deemed necessary because of Britain’s superior sea skills and technology because of Br itain’s superior sea skills and technology, and also because Britain would be fighting a defensive war, allowing it to win with fewer forces. Napoleon never lost substantial impediment to his control of Europe. As his force neared that goal, Napoleon grew increasingly impatient and began planning an immediate attack.of sleepSleep is very ancient. In the electroencephalographic sense we share it with all the primates and almost all the other mammals and birds: it may extend back as far as the reptiles. There is some evidence that the two types of sleep, dreaming and dreamless, depend on the life-style of the animal, and that predators are statistically much more likely to dream than prey, which are in turn much more likely to experience dreamless sleep. In dream sleep, the animal is powerfully immobilized and remarkably unresponsive to external stimuli. Dreamless sleep is much shallower, and we have all witnessed cats or dogs cocking their ears to a sound when apparently fast asleep. The fact that deep dream sleep is rare among pray today seems clearly to be a product of natural selection, and it makes sense that today, when sleep is highly evolved, the stupid animals are less frequently immobilized by deep sleep than the smart ones. But why should they sleep deeply at all? Why should a state of such deep immobilization ever have evolved?Perhaps one useful hint about the original function of sleep is to be found in the fact that dolphins and whales and aquatic mammals in genera seem to sleep very little. There is, by and large, no place to hide in the ocean. Could it be that, rather than increasing an animal’s vulnerability, the University of Florida and Ray Meddis of London University have suggested this to be the case. It is conceivable that animals who are too stupid to be quite on their own initiative are, during periods of high risk, immobilized by the implacable arm of sleep. The point seems particularly clear for the young of predatory animals. This is an interesting notion andprobably at least partly true.American Universities 胖胖:)Before the 1850’s, the United States had a number of small colleges, most of them dating from colonial days. They were small, church connected institutions whose primary concern was to shape the moral character of their students.Throughout Europe, institutions of higher learning had developed, bearing the ancient name of university. In German university was concerned primarily with creating and spreading knowledge, not morals. Between mid-century and the end of the 1800’s, more than nine thousand young Americans, dissatisfied with their training at home, went to Germany for advanced study. Some of them return to become presidents of venerable colleges-----Harvard, Yale, Columbia---and transform them into modern universities. The new presidents broke all ties with the churches and brought in a new kind of faculty. Professors were hired for their knowledge of a subject, not because they were of the proper faith and had a strong arm for disciplining students. The new principle was that a university was to create knowledge as well as pass it on, and this called for a faculty composed of teacher-scholars. Drilling and learning by rote were replaced by the German method of lecturing, in which the professor’s own research was presented in class. Graduate training leading tothe , an ancient German degree signifying the highest level of advanced scholarly attainment, was introduced. With the establishment of the seminar system, graduate student learned to question, analyze, and conduct their own research. At the same time, the new university greatly expanded in size and course offerings, breaking completely out of the old, constricted curriculum of mathematics, classics, rhetoric, and music. The president of Harvard pioneered the elective system, by which studentswere able to choose their own course of study. The notion of major fields of study emerged. The new goal was to make the university relevant to the real pursuits of the world. Paying close heed to the practical needs of society, the new universities trained men and women to work at its tasks, with engineering students being the most characteristic of the new regime. Students were also trained as economists, architects, agriculturalists, social welfare workers, and teachers.’s numerical skills 怎么还是胖胖:)people appear to born to compute. The numerical skills of children develop so early and so inexorably that it is easy to imagine an internal clock of mathematical maturity guiding their growth. Not long after learning to walk and talk, they can set the table with impress accuracy---one knife, one spoon, one fork, for each of the five chairs. Soon they are capable of nothing that they have placed five knives, spoons and forks on the table and, a bit later, thatthis amounts to fifteen pieces of silverware. Having thus mastered addition, they move on to subtraction. It seems almost reasonable to expect that if a child were secluded on a desert island at birth and retrieved seven years later, he or she could enter a second enter a second-grade mathematics class without any serious problems of intellectual adjustment.Of course, the truth is not so simple. This century, the work of cognitive psychologists has illuminated the subtle forms of daily learning on which intellectual progress depends. Children were observed as they slowly grasped-----or, as the case might be, bumped into-----concepts that adults take for quantity is unchanged as water pours from a short glass into a tall thin one. Psychologists have since demonstrated that young children, asked to count the pencils in a pile, readily report the number of blue or red pencils, but must be coaxed into finding the total. Such studies have suggested that the rudiments of mathematics are mastered gradually, and with effort. They have also suggested that the very concept of abstract numbers------the idea of a oneness,a twoness, a threeness that applies to any class of objects and is a prerequisite for doing anything more mathematically demanding than setting a table-----is itself far from innate20 The Historical Significance of American RevolutionThe ways of history are so intricate and the motivations of human actions so complex that it is always hazardous to attempt to represent events covering a number of years, a multiplicity of persons, and distant localities as the expression of one intellectual or social movement; yet the historical process which culminated in the ascent of Thomas Jefferson to the presidency can be regarded as the outstanding example not only of the birth of a new way of life but of nationalism as a new way of life. The American Revolution represents the link between the seventeenth century, in which modern England became conscious of itself, and the awakening of modern Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. It may seem strange that the march of history should have had to cross the Atlantic Ocean, but only in the North American colonies could a struggle for civicliberty lead also to the foundation of a new nation. Here, in the popular rising against a “tyrannical” government, the fruits were more than the securing of a freer constitution. They included the growth of a nation born in liberty by the will of the people, not from the roots of common descent, a geographic entity, or the ambitions of king or dynasty. With the American nation, for the first time, a nation was born, not in the dim past of history but before the eyes of the whole world.。

Nowadays, many youth changes their jobs frequently which have aroused large focus by public. Some people think young people should stick to one job until they learn things. But others think if young people have higher salary or position, they could change their jobs as well as they like. In my opinion, I prefer the second one.
Firstly, many students don’t know what kinds of job they really want after graduate, but if they practice and change constantly, they may find the favor one. Moreover, change means step forward. Of course, they will choose the one with high pay or high position.首先,许多同学毕业后不知道自己真正想做什么,但假如他们不断尝试和转变,他们马能会找到最喜爱的那份中作,另外,转变意味着进步,他们会选择工资,职位高的工作,是理所当然的。

In recent years, the integration of technology in education has become increasingly prevalent, with many schools and universities incorporating digital tools and platforms into their curriculum. This trend has brought about both benefits and challenges, shaping the way students learn and teachers educate. One of the main advantages of technology in education is its ability to enhance learning experiences. Interactive multimedia resources, online learning platforms, and educational apps provide students with access to a wealth of information and resources that can help them better understand complex concepts and engage with their studies in a more interactive anddynamic way. Additionally, technology enables personalized learning experiences, allowing students to work at their own pace and receive tailored feedback and support.Furthermore, technology has also expanded opportunities for collaboration and communication among students and teachers. Virtual classrooms, online discussion forums, and video conferencing tools enable students to connect with their peers and educators from all over the world, fostering a sense of global citizenship and enhancing cross-cultural understanding. However, the widespread use of technology in education also presents challenges. One of the main concerns is the potential for technology to create a digital divide, where students from low-income backgrounds may not have equal access to technology and online resources. Additionally, there is a risk of technology replacing traditional teaching methods, leading to a loss of critical thinking skills and face-to-face interaction. In conclusion, the integration of technology in education has the potential to revolutionize the way we learn and teach. While there are challenges to overcome, the benefits of technology in education far outweigh the drawbacks. By harnessing the power of technology, we can create a more inclusive, interactive, andengaging learning environment for students of all backgrounds and abilities.篇3Introduction:The New Oriental TOEFL Writing Test is an important part of the TOEFL test. He will have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and will be faced with a wider variety of problems to solve. In this way, we won‟t repeat the mistakes of others and can build on their achievements.Practical experience, on the other hand, can give us more useful knowledge.

新东方背诵作文50篇(101 The Language of Music A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A poser writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the poser is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to e a performer as a medical student needs to e a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm—two entirely different movements.Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibil ity to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlappingtone has to sound clear. This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.Technique is of no use unless it is bined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.02 Schooling and EducationIt is monly believed in United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparentto the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of one’s entire life.Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that there not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their munities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding theformalized process of schooling.03 The Definition of “Price”Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a plex network posed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professional, transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the “system” of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, plicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price”, many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or, in other words that price is the money values of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a plete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amount of money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with theamount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that pris e the total “package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.04 ElectricityThe modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure, people grope about in flickering candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for million of years. Scientists are discovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity. All living cell send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram, which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small – often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have e so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cell are linked together, the effects can be astonishing. The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can seed a jolt of as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it live. ( An electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel’s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length of its body.05 The Beginning of DramaThere are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The on most widely accepted today is based onthe assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world-even the seasonal changes-as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used, Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire munity did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the “acting area" and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mimed the desiredeffect-success in hunt or battle, the ing rain, the revival of the Sun-as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.Another theory traces the theater"s origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to this vies tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person.A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.06 TelevisionTelevision__the most pervasive and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth-is moving into a new era, an era of extraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and puter technologies. The word "television", derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Latin (visio: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through asophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulses, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image.Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for munication, and as such es a powerful tool for reaching other human beings. The field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad-based airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is nonbroadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques.Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what exists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, whohave been the major purveyors of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have e to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.07 Andrew CarnegieAndrew Carnegie, known as the King of Steel, built the steel industry in the United States, and , in the process, became one of the wealthiest men in America. His success resulted in part from his ability to sell the product and in part from his policy of expanding during periods of economic decline, when most of his petitors were reducing their investments.Carnegie believed that individuals should progress through hard work, but he also felt strongly that the wealthy should use their fortunes for the benefit of society. He opposed charity, preferring instead to provide educational opportunities that would allow others to help themselves. "He who dies rich, dies disgraced," he often said.Among his more noteworthy contributions to society are those that bear his name, including the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh, which has a library, a museum of fine arts, and amuseum of national history. He also founded a school of technology that is now part of Carnegie-Mellon University. Other philanthrophic gifts are the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to promote understanding between nations, the Carnegie Institute of Washington to fund scientific research, and Carnegie Hall to provide a center for the arts.Few Americans have been left untouched by Andrew Carnegie"s generosity. His contributions of more than five million dollars established 2,500 libraries in small munities throughout the country and formed the nucleus of the public library system that we all enjoy today.08 American RevolutionThe American Revolution was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations. Significant changes were ushered in, but they were not breathtaking. What happened was accelerated evolution rather than outright revolution. During the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. Most of them were not seriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated munities scarcely knew that a war wason.America"s War of Independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. One was Canada, which received its first large influx of English-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the United States. Another was Australia, which became a penal colony now that America was no longer available for prisoners and debtors. The third er-the United States-based itself squarely on republican principles.Yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. In some states, notably Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule already existing. British officials, everywhere ousted, were replaced by a home-grown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and Parliament.09 SuburbanizationIf by "suburb" is meant an urban margin that grows more rapidly than its already developed interior, the process of suburbanization began during the emergence of the industrial city in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Before that period the city was a small highly pact cluster in which people moved about on foot and goods were conveyed by horse andcart. But the early factories built in the 1840"s were located along waterways and near railheads at the edges of cities, and housing was needed for the thousands of people drawn by the prospect of employment. In time, the factories were surrounded by proliferating mill towns of apartments and row houses that abutted the older, main cities. As a defense against this encroachment and to enlarge their tax bases, the cities appropriated their industrial neighbors. In 1854, for example, the city of Philadelphia annexed most of Philadelphia County. Similar municipal maneuvers took place in Chicago and in New York. Indeed, most great cities of the United States achieved such status only by incorporating the munities along their borders. With the acceleration of industrial growth came acute urban crowding and panying social stress-conditions that began to approach disastrous proportions when, in 1888, the first mercially successful electric traction line was developed. Within a few years the horse-drawn trolleys were retired and electric streetcar networks crisscrossed and connected every major urban area, fostering a wave of suburbanization that transformed the pact industrial city into a dispersed metropolis. This first phase of mass-scale suburbanization was reinforced by the simultaneousemergence of the urban Middle Class, whose desires for homeownership in neighborhoods far from the aging inner city were satisfied by the developers of single-family housing tracts.10 Types of SpeechStandard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the speakers of a language in any situation regardless of the level of formality. As such, these words and expressions are well defined and listed in standard dictionaries. Colloquialisms, on the other hand, are familiar words and idioms that are understood by almost all speakers of a language and used in informal speech or writing, but not considered appropriate for more formal situations. Almost all idiomatic expressions are colloquial language. Slang, however, refers to words and expressions understood by a large number of speakers but not accepted as good, formal usage by the majority. Colloquial expressions and even slang may be found in standard dictionaries but will be so identified. Both colloquial usage and slang are more mon in speech than in writing.Colloquial speech often passes into standard speech. Some slang also passes into standard speech, but other slang expressions enjoy momentary popularity followed by obscurity. In some cases, the majority never accepts certain slang phrases but nevertheless retains them in their collective memories. Every generation seems to require its own set of words to describe familiar objects and events. It has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three cultural conditions are necessary for the creation of a large body of slang expressions. First, the introduction and acceptance of new objects and situations in the society; second, a diverse population with a large number of subgroups; third, association among the subgroups and the majority population. Finally, it is worth noting that the terms "standard" "colloquial" and "slang" exist only as abstract labels for scholars who study language. Only a tiny number of the speakers of any language will be aware that they are using colloquial or slang expressions. Most speakers of English will, during appropriate situations, select and use all three types of expressions.。

1.College Students Should Attend Physical ExercisePhysical exercise is a necessary part of college life. However, still some college students do not like to attend sports activities, they think those activities waste their time and influence their study. Indeed, it is very unwise for college students to keep distance from physical exercise because physical exercise is not harmful but good to them.College students can benefit a lot from physical exercise. First of all, attending physical sports can help students build a strong body, and keep abounding energy. Moreover, physical exercise is an effective way to release pressure and keep a pleasant mood. Besides, by attending physical activities, students can have chances to contact and communicate with others which can help them improve their social skills.Nowadays, all colleges and universities have provided many sports facilities for students to do physical exercises, students can chose freely according to their interests and needs. As for me, I am keen on all kinds of ball games, especially football and basketball. From these games, I have gained a lot, and enjoined great pleasure. To conclude, physical exercise is beneficial to every college students, and therefore do not hesitate to attend sports activities.2. Online GamesAs a product of modern computer and the Internet, online games have become very popular among college students. Many students have enjoyed great pleasure and satisfaction from these games. But as we see, some students lacking self discipline on too much indulge in these games, so that their health and academic performances are affected. This phenomenon has caused much worry from the teachers and parents. However, some others argue that online games are not always harmful. They can train their ability of youngsters to respond to things quickly. Moreover, they can stimulate their imagination and their interest in computer science. More importantly, it does bring college students much pleasure and release their pressure greatly.Form my point of view, online games are a wonderful entertainment if you play them in a clever way. When they interfere too much with your study, it is better for you to give them up at once, but if you have enough self control over them, you can certainly obtain real pleasure and benefit a lot from them.3. PatriotismPatriotism has been one of the great national spirits. It makes one ready to sacrifice his life for his country and to do many other deeds that can bring benefits to the people. Throughout history, it is just great patriotism that has helped a country win the wars, and survive the disasters. It is just great patriotism that has made a country strong, and made her history glorious. In modern society, though our country has been 9in peaceful development, patriotism is still necessary. However, it has many new meanings and expressing ways. Firstly, in the new period of the socialism development, a patriot must be devoted to the construction of socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics. Secondly, facing economi c globalization, a patriot must try to safeguard the nation’s interests on the basis of opening-up strategies of mutual benefit. Thirdly, patriotism embodies in the support of national reunification. Finally, love and respect for work is also oneimportant reflection of patriotism. As a college student in the 21st century, every one of us has responsibility to love our country. For one thing, we must study hard to obtain more knowledge to contribute to the construction of our motherland. For another, we must keep informed of current affairs and show concern to the national economy and the people’s livelihood. A patriotic college student must discard the mind of “Two ears can not hear out of the window”.4. How to Deal with Peer Pressure?College students are often obsessed by peer pressure from their classmates or schoolmates. Facing others’ hard work and good performance in academic and other aspects, many students feel great pressure. Then, how to deal with this kind of peer pressure? The following measures can be taken. First, you should take a careful look at your present level and set a practical object. You needn’t always compare yourselves with those on the top and just make your efforts towards your object. Second, under peer pressure, you shouldn’t feel discouraged and pressed. Instead, you should make it your motivation for harder work. Finally, if you find pressure is nearly beyond your control, you’d better turn to professional psychological guidance. As a college student, I have no way to avoid peer pressure, so I try to figure out the way to do with it well. I set my own goal, including my practical level and my position among the peers. Because of my focus on my own goal, I have no time and energy to think about the pressure. So I’m little tr oubled by it. To conclude, we should not escape from peer pressure, but learn to make best use of it, since it can hardly be avoided.5. Should College Students be Tutors?Nowadays there are more and more provided tutors among college students. Some students even take a few tutor jobs at the same time. People have different opinions about this phenomenon. Some people believe college students can benefit a lot from being tutors. On the one hand they can earn some money and lessen the burden on their family. On the other hand they can have chances to apply their knowledge to the solution to the practical problems. However still others object to college students being a tutor. They think that a student should focus on his study instead of doing a part-time job. If they spend too much time on teaching, they will not have enough time to study, and naturally their academic performance will be affected.Weighing the two arguments, I’m in favor of the former one. In my opinion, to be a tutor is a good practical activity for us college students, from which we can gain practical experience and skills. But it is worth noting that we cannot spend too much time in being tutors. We should balance the relationship between the tutor job and study.6. Welcome to the camera ClubWelcome to the camera club. With the sponsor of the student’s union, the camera club has been set and served all the students for 15 years. Many wonderful activities are organized and arranged in our club. What you need to do is just to call us at 62514479 or email us at cameraclub@. Looking forward to your participation!7. Extravagant Spending on College CampusAccording to a survey, in recent years, the monthly expenditure of a college student has been on the sharp rise. Many college students spend money like water and have no concept of thrift in their mind. They take it for granted that they spend money from their parents before they enter into society. This extravagant spending is mainly caused by the following factors.First of all, nowadays, most students are the only children of their families. They are the apple in their family’s eyes and naturally get m ore care and pocket money. Secondly, with the improvement of living standards, parents can afford higher expenditures of their children. Thirdly, some students like to pursue fashion and trends, which tends to need more money. Finally, campus love is also a possible factor causing extravagant spending.Form my point of view, a college student as a pure consumer should learn to be thrifty we should limit our expenditure on barely necessities but not buy whatever we want, regardless of their prices. The habit of thrift can help us form right values and is favorable to our future development.8. A Quarrel in the DormitoryWeeks ago I witnessed the quarrel between my two roommates. It shocked me the two good friends fired out just for a very trifling matter. It was in the morning at weekend when I was washing my face in the bathroom. Suddenly I heard Ann and Sue shouting at each other. I hurried to come out to see what happened. It turned out that the noise of Sue’s closing the door waked Ann, whose bed is just beside the door. Ann thought Sue deliberately closed the door heavily. Sue didn’t have made her fault and said Ann was making trouble out of nothing. So their argument became ambits of quarrel. Though later they stopped quarreling under our persuasion, neither of them would like apologize to the other.Such a quarrel leaves me to think a lot about dormitory harmony. If either Ann or Sue can be a little tolerant or take a better way to express herself, this quarrel, I think, can be avoided easily. It is no doubt that a harmony dormitory life benefits all the members. But it needs our common efforts to build it.9. Students’ Pursuit for Famous BrandsNowadays many college students like to pursue famous brands. From clothes to mobile phones, even study articles like electronic dictionaries and pens, they areinclined to buy famous brands. Moreover, many students from poor families begin to follow this consumption trend as well. This phenomenon has aroused wide attention. The following reasons can account for college students’ preference for famous brands. Above all, in many college students’ eyes, a famous brand is a symbol of sophistication and taste. They expect others to admire their high class and good taste. What’s more, in modern society, famous brands to some extent are equal to fashion, which has a great attraction to young college students. Besides, parents’ spoiling their children helps form their bad consumption habit. As far as I am concerned, it is irrational for college students to pursue famous brands. After all, most of famous brands are far beyond their consumption ability. Besides, it is not famous brands but a person’s noble charact er that really makes him high class. Therefore, college students should attach more importance to cultivating a good character rather than pursuing famous brands.10. Our Schoolmate Is in Need of Your HelpJuly 23, 2008Dear schoolmates,I’m writing this l etter to call on all the students in our university to help Sun Lei, one of our schoolmates in Business Management Department. As you may know, most areas in Guangxi province are suffering form the flood. In fact, Sun Lei comes from the most serious stricken city in Guangxi. It’s very necessary for us to show our lo0ve and help to him. On the one hand, all the property of his family was washed away by the flood. On the other hand, he is in great need of money to pay the tuition fee. So, it is high time that we gave a hand to him and pulled him through. The first nut for us to crack is to donate money to him as soon as possible. Then, we could do our utmost to persuade our department leaders to relieve his tuition fee, concerning his particular situation. If you are willing to give him a hand, please contact us at the number 23533316 in the daytime. Just as the old saying goes, two heads are better than one. Please join us in the action and extend your love into a spirit that dares any possible difficulties!Thank you!Students’ Union11. The University’s Branch Campuses in Suburban AreasIn recent years more and more universities have built up their branch campuses in suburban areas. Now it is very difficult to find a university without a branch campus. Maybe no one can tell clearly when the first branch campus came out, but the reasons behind this phenomenon are obvious.Among these reasons, the enrollment expansion of universities plays a very vital role. As more and more freshmen are remitted to universities, the original facilities, including classrooms, apartments, dining houses, laboratories and the like, are not enough any more. What’s more, the land in the suburb is relatively low in price, which is affordable for most universities. Besides, the quiet environment in suburban areas is more suitable for students to study. As a college student, I think, it is necessary and beneficial for many universities to build up a branch campus. However the building of branch campuses brings someproblems. For one thing, the students in some branch campuses cannot enjoy good enough facilities and the teachers due to limited resources. For another it leads to less direct communications among teachers and students. Therefore the university should take a full account before it decides to build up a branch campus.12. Young People Should Have Ideals“What are you going to do when you grow up?” When I was a child, people often asked me this question about the ideal. Undoubtedly, every individual, especially a young person, should have an ideal. Hardly can we find any great people we know ideal when they were young. An ideal is a vital importance to one’s growth and success. On the one hand, an ideal is the target of one’s life. Once you decide what your ideal is, you know where to go, and which way to take. Otherwise, you might become puzzled in many things in your life. On the other hand, an ideal is like the engine of vehicles. Only when we have our own ideals, can we find the origin of energy and enthusiasm in life, and become active and perseverant.Whatever your ideal is, careful plan and preparation is vital to its realization. Of course, the path from where you are to where you want to get is not always smooth and straight. Therefore, an optimistic, positive mind is indispensable in the process of your persevering your ideal. In a word, only if you have an ideal will you have the chance of realizing it.13. A Letter Applying for a Bank LoanSep 12th, 2008To whom it may concern,I am a freshman of Lianhe University, majoring in Applied Physics. I am writing in the hope that I may obtain a bank loan to support my study in Applied Physics for the following four years. My parents are both laid-off workers, so it’s beyond their power to finance me through the college education. To make matters worse, my mother has suddenly fallen ill and is expecting a major operation. the college tuition becoming a much heavier burden on my family, I am compelled to apply for a RMB20,000 bank loan.I give you my p romise that the loan would be used properly. Meanwhile, I’ll spare no effort to work hard both in the study and my future career so as to pay back the loan. I would be greatly obliged if my application is granted. And I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.Sincerely yours,Song Xue14. Study and Work-study ProgramNowadays, more and more college students are taking part in work-study programs in their spare time. Many of them choose to be a tutor or doing a part-time job in school dining room or library. Also some others do a part-time delivering man or promotion specialist or other jobs alike. There are mainly three different reasons for college students to take work-study program. First, to earn money is the main aim of many students, they want to relieve the burden on their family by doing a part-time job. Second, some students takework-study programs as a channel by which they know the society and improve their practical skills. Third, still other students doing part-time job just for fun or kill time. From my point of view, it goes without saying that college students can benefit a lot from work-study programs. However, those students who get part-time jobs should keep it in mind that study is prior to anything else. Besides, they should spend their income from part-time job reasonably.15. How to Build an Ideal Teacher-Student RelationshipThe relationship between a teacher and the student can be either good or bad, helpful or harmful. Either way, the relationship may affect the student for the rest of his life. A good teacher-student relationship will make learning enjoyable and efficient, and make the teacher’s job worthwhile. In contrast, a bad relationship can discourage the students from learning, and make teaching an unpleasant task. But how to build an ideal teacher-student relationship? First of all, the teacher and the student should respect each other, which is the precondition about good relationship. Moreover the teacher’s attitude plays an important role. If the teacher is too strict, it might frighten the student. On the other hand, if the teacher is too permissive, the student may become lazy. Besides, the teacher should give the student encouragement, as well as have patients and understanding. Finally, as for the student, he should be eager for knowledge and willing to work hard. If he learns from his teacher modestly, he will be able to profit fully from his teacher’s teaching. In conclusion, a good teacher-student relationship need common efforts from both the teacher and the student, and it can be mutually beneficial. The student gains knowledge enjoyably and the teacher gains satisfaction from his teaching job.16. Champion SpokespersonNowadays, we often can see that some champions in the college entrance examination speak for some products. This phenomenon has sparked much debate. Some people think it will create a win-win situation for a champion to be a spokesperson since it can bring profits for both the producer and the champion himself or herself. Besides, these models in study get publicized, which to some extent will stimulate other students to study hard. However, other people object to this strongly. They insist that this behavior should be banned because in most cases the champion has not used the product they speak for. Furthermore, if a champion is paid too much attention to or is of ten exposed to the media, it is not good for his or her growth.Weighing up the pros and cons, I prefer to the latter opinion. In my opinion, a spokesperson must be responsible for the product he or she speaks for, but the young champion is not mature enough to do this. Besides, to be a champion in the college entrance examination does n’t mean the student has made final success. Attending the speaking activities will influence his or her normal study. Therefore, I think the champions’ speaking behaviors should not be encouraged.17. An Invitation LetterJune 15th, 2008Dear Xue Feng,This June 30th I am going to graduate, so I want to hold a party on Saturdayevening in my house. It would be pleasant to have you here.So interesting will this party be that you can’t afford to miss it. For one thing, we will have a big meal, sing the popular songs and play games. For another, it also provides a good opportunity for you to meet many friends that you haven’t seen for a long time. What an important thing it is for me to get your participation. First, you are my best friend and bring home to me many things. Second, we haven’t seen each other for quite a long time and I am eager to see you. The party would not be complete without you.The party will begin at seven thirty p.m. Is it possible for us to see you at seven on Saturday evening in my house? I do hope you can come.Sincerely yours,Ma Yuan18. Skipping Classes on College CampusIn colleges and universities, the phenomenon of students skipping classes is not unusual. There are often some students who skip those classes for feeling unwell or other private reasons. Besides, still some students don’t go to class without any reason but for they don’t want to.There are two main reasons for college students skipping classes. First, compared with in middle school, students have more freedom in college. It depends more on one student’s consciousness whether he will attend the class. So those students lacking self-discipline begin to skip classes. Second, some teachers’ lectures could not at tract students’ interests, so that some students would rather skip classes to study what they are interested in.For whatever reasons, skipping classes does bring negative effects on students’ study. Therefore, it is necessary to take some effective measures to reduce this phenomenon. On the one hand, the school and teachers should make students realize the negative effects of skipping classes and enhance their consciousness of attending the class. On the other hand, teachers have to improve their teaching quality to attract students’ interests in the courses. Only in this way can the phenomenon of skipping classes be reduced as soon as possibly.19. A Boom in Continuing EducationFrom the graph, we can learn the number of the Continuing Education participation has kept increasing from 1992 to 2007 in X city. In 1992 there were only thirty thousand people taking part in the Continuing Education, but in 1995 the number grown to 60 thousand ,and in 2000, one hundred and 40 , and by to 2007, the number has reached two hundred and teen thousand . It can be seen easily that Continuing Education is gaining more and more popularity. The following reasons are responsible for this boom in continuing education. Firstly, during the work many people begin to realize what they have learned in school is far from enough. So they turn to continuing education to gain more knowledge and skills. Moreover, as the science and technology in China are developing very fast, adults after graduation have to refresh themselves. In addition, in modern society, those without bachelor’s degrees or above are less competitive. As far as I am concerned the Boom in Continuing Education is a necessity. Improvise those under job people with transcends to get advanced degrees and gain more knowledge. As our society develops, more and more people will receive continuing education in the future.20. Is it Good to Write about Martial Arts Novels in the Textbooks?Recently, the compiling group of the Chinese textbooks has made a decision that some parts of a martial arts novel would be selected as one of the texts. This has sparked off a heated debate. Some people think that it is a good idea. They say the martial arts novels are also a good literature type and should be included in the textbooks. However, others are strongly against this decision. They say it will do no good to students because these novels sing the praises for nothing but fighting and revenge. In my opinion, it is not reasonable to select the text from a marital arts novel. Firstly, the main theme of these novels is revenge. Secondly, the characters do nothing but fight with each other. It seems they needn’t make a living. Thirdly, there are all kinds of factions in the novels. Students who have not established their values and outlook of life will be affected by these ideas. Therefore, I insist that these novels should be removed from the textbook. Some good materials should be selected to instruct the students to form the correct outlook of life.21. Is This the Way to Relieve the Burden of Students? In order to relieve the burden of students in primary and high school, the Ministry of Education has decided to force the schools to close on weekends. But contrary to the good intention, many parents have employed family tutors for their children. This behavior has aroused heated discussion. Some people criticize these parents strictly because they think excessive pressure will injure children both physically and mentally. They hold that health is o the first importance to children. However, many other people hold the opposite opinion. They stand by these parents. They say nowadays children are faced with great pressure from their schoolwork and employment. These parents want to help their children win in the stating line, which is a wise doing.Weighing up the pros and cons, I don’t think it is advisable for parents to employ family tutors for their children learning is not the only thing for a student. Too heavy burden is unfavorable to the healthy growth of a child. In my opinion, instead of placing a lot of pressure on the children, parents and teachers should make sure that the children make the best use of class time, leaving more free time for them to go in for other activities.22. Machine Translation and Human TranslationIn recent years, all kinds of electronic dictionaries and translation software have been developed. With the development of technology, these electronic dictionaries and software can help us translate not only words and phrases, but even sentences and paragraphs. So some people come to the conclusion that machine translation will replace traditional human translation. However, I couldn’t agree with this argument.Admittedly, translation machines and software bring much convenience for our study and work. With them, we needn’t bother to live through the heavy dictionaries. However, machine translation has its disadvantages. First, generally speaking, translation software only can give direct translation, which is sometimes not in accordance with the original articles in logic and meaning. Second, some people depend on electronic dictionaries and software too much, which is unfavorable to their improvement in language ability.Considering the above mentioned, I think that machine translation cannot replace human translation, but it is a good complementary to human translation. Therefore, we should combine machine translation with human translation efficiently.23.How to Make Full Use of Reference Books?Nowadays reference books have become a problem of great concern for both teachers and students. There are many kinds of reference books available in the book market. A smarter use of these books is certainly beneficial. But the misuse and over-use of them may cause a lot of problems.First of all, teaching reference books might make the students less attentive in class. Armed with reference books, many students may think that they know what the teacher is going to talk about. So they may not listen to the teacher in class at all. Secondly, some students rely on the reference books too much, which is unfavorable to the improvement of their ability to work out the solutions for themselves. Thirdly, there are some reference books with many mistakes, which might mislead the students.Considering the above mentioned, we should be careful in selecting and using reference books. Firstly, we should check the contents of the book carefully, but not only pay attention to the brand of the publishing house. In addition we can turn to the recommendation of teachers and students around us. Besides, reference books are just an assistant, so we shouldn’t rely on them too much. Only in this way can we make full use of reference books.24. University MergenceMergence is a new trend in university development. As a hot topic on and off campus, it has received much of public attention. People’s attitudes towards it vary greatly.People against it see it as a hasty decision, which has some potential problems. They claim, for instance, located far away from each other, universities involved with mergence are usually faced with the tough problem of management. But other people favor as an important step that Chinese universities take towards the goal of first-class university in the world. They argue that only through mergence can our universities give full play to their disadvantages. They also point out that university mergence will increase the competitive power of our universities in the world.Weighing the two arguments, I think, university mergence has more advantages than disadvantages. Mergence may bring the re-integration of resources of the universities and enable them to complement each other. It is beneficial to the development of both the universities and the students. But the universities, before deciding to merge, should take into account the potential dangers resulting from the mergence.25. Will Network Classrooms Replace Traditional Classrooms?。

For example, the invention of television and space rocket have opened a new era for mankind.Through the use of TV people can hear the sound and learn the events happening thousands of miles away. People will continually find new ways to control pollution.5. Governments of manycountries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop environmental pollution.Still more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. People should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of birth control, to conserve(保存)our natural resources and recycle(再循环)our products. They create a lot of noise and traffic accidents which disable(伤残)or kill many people each year. As it is able to store andprocess a large amount of information, the computer bring about great convenience and high efficiency to people of all walks of life.Computers can help people in different ways. When people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder.Travelling is also one of the best means for learning. You may have read or heard about somethingbut you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. So both the causes of population increase and the results of having more people are worth careful study.Culture evolution is the major factor responsible for population increase. We must carry out the birth control program in order to save the mankind and save the world.10. If the two conflict, the former should beunder the latter, for the people's interests are more important than the individual's.In regard to my choice in the future, I am fond of learning foreign languages; what is more, with the implementation of the Open-Door Policy, exchange between home and abroad in economy and culture has been growing significantly, thus I'm determined to be a qualified interpreter.12. In a word, the electronic brains are hopelessly inadequate in comparison with the human brains.13. Health and LifeAs the saying goes, you don‟t know what happiness is until you lose it‟ you don‟t know what health is until you are ill. “Health is of vital importance to life” sounds like a cliche to everyone, but it is absolutely true. Wehave reason to be optimistic in this respect.15. China was on the edge of collapse. Competition can stimulate people to try their best to do anything. I must study hard in all the fields so that I can be a useful man when I enter the society after graduation.16.Students‟ Part-time jobsThere are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. For instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing. It enables him to be independent and builds up his self-confidence. Therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society. As everything has two sides, the disadvantages can‟t be ignored. Part-time jobs cut into students‟ study time; some even become so preoccupied with making money that they ca …t focus their attention on studying. In today‟s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person‟s success an d capability. If you want money just for your own needs, you‟ll never be satisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people, only then can money be the source of your happiness.18.IdealsEveryone has his ideals. A businessman wishes to make greater profit; a farmer expects bumperharvests; a student tries to learn more and better. My ideal is to become a doctor, It is said that the field of medicine is a well-paid profession, but I take it as a lofty profession entrusted with saving peop le‟s lives. In the world the Chinese have become a strong people insteadof “the weaklings of East Asia”.20.Is Failure a Bad Thing?Failure is what often happens. It is everywhere in our life. Students may fail in exams, scientists may fail in their research work, and athletes may fail in competitions.Although failure happens to e veryone, attitudes towards failure are various. Some people don‟t think their failure is a very important thing at all. It is verycommon to see people ride motorcycles or even drive private cars and more and more families have telephones, computers and air-conditioners.The modernization of family life brings us convenience and comfort.
