2 The rhetoric(修辞法)
►O. Henry uses a large number of rhetoric in his novels, such as simile(明喻), metaphor(暗喻) and irony(讽刺). It makes readers experience his sense of humor vividly.
It‟s about a New York City hobo named Soapy, who sets out to get arrested so he can avoid sleeping in the cold winter as a guest of the city jail. Despite efforts at petty theft, disorderly conduct, and "mashing" with a young prostitute, Soapy fails to draw the attention of the police. Disconsolate, he pauses in front of a church, where an organ anthem inspires him to clean up his life — and is ironically charged for loitering and sentenced to three months in prison.

►In writing style, O. Henry uses the civilian language, therefore readers can easily understand what he wants to express. Another characteristic of his language is implicative. His sense of humor expresses indirectly. Readers can still recall after reading.
About his life
William Sydney Porter was born in Greenboro, North Carolina. His father was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his parental（父亲的） grandmother and paternal aunt. William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store and on a Texas ranch. He continued to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including accountant,land board clerk, reporter.

About his life
• O. Henry's last years were shadowed by alcoholism（酗酒）, ill health, and financial problems. • O. Henry died of cirrhosis（肝硬化） of the liver（此处指肝 脏） on June 5, 1910, in New York. Three more collections, Sixes And Sevens (1911), Rolling Stones (1912) and Waifs And Strays (1917), appeared posthumously（于死后出版）. • During his lifetime, O. Henry published 10 collections and over 600 short stories.

► In plot, O. Henry‟ s novels develop fast and in the end suddenly appear an unexpected ending. The so-called “O. Henry-type ending” usually refers that at the end of the novel suddenly the character‟s mind changes in an unexpected situation, or the fate of the main character reverses sharply, the result is unexpected, but reasonable, in line with the reality of life, resulting in a unique artistic charm.

Literary career
He was a prolific American short-story writer, a master of surprise endings, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City like clerks, policemen, waitresses. Henry was known as a good end, it was called “O•Henryend”. Although some critics were not so enthusiastic about his work, the public loved it. He was called Prose Laureate of Manhattan and Father of short stories. Both authors wrote twist endings, but O. Henry stories were much more playful. He is one of three short story master in the world.(O.Henry , Maupassant, Chekhov)

The Young, poor painter Johnsy contracted pneumonia, Sue make every effort to take care of her, but she still did not improve. Johnsy would give up completely when the last leaf fell to the ground. In order to save her ,Another old artist Behrman climbed the wall to paint the ivy leave in rainy night, which he contracted pneumonia and died two days later.
