Then we got City Lights. OK, what is known for all, in the world of silent fim, Chaplin was the king! Oh, god! This guy must by the most famous one on film screen although he was just a poor, dirty tramp. Now, look, round hat, samll beard, old suit, big shoes and bamboo cane, Chaplin used this character in most of his silent films. All these made our tramp a well known character. Then I will introduce some of his main silent films to you. Firstly, it’s Gold Rush.
Of all Chaplin's films City Lights offers the fullest characterization of the Tramp. He's a loner who comes and goes almost like a dream figure or a drunken angel. Without family, friends, or a place to live, he stands outside of our reality, sometimes trying to fit in and sometimes not caring whether or not he does. Yet, like a child, he is a complete innocent with a pure heart and the best motives. The most touching thing about his relationship with the Flower Girl is that, because she is blind, she cannot see his shabby appearance and does not judge him the way others do. And, when her sightlessness has been lifted, her attitude does not change. They were all poor, kind people. Thirdly, we have Modern Times. This film was Charlie Chaplin's last silent film.
Set in the 1930s during the Great Depression era, the film's main concerns echo those of millions of people at the time, unemployment, poverty, and hunger. It has a number of wonderfully inventive and memorable routines and scenes that proclaim the frustrating struggle by proletarian man against the dehumanizing effects of the machine in the Industrial Age, and various social institutions. At the beginning of the film a written note projected on the screen announces the film as "A story of industry, of individual enterprise, of humanity crusading in the pursuit of happiness."
Ok, we got it! At the same time there would be background music and sound effects played during a film. That’s so smart. When you see a train on screen you may hear the train tweet at the same time. Anang”. In this way, actors’ acting becomes so important because, we were all “deaf” during a film. We can not hear you and we can just know your condition through your action and expressions on your face. Most early movies were made in this style for technical reasons. So, Google said, science and innovation change the world!
Now I will make an introduction of Chaplin’s silent films to you. Firstly we should know exactly what silent film is or, how to define this concept? Silent film wasn’t really “silent”, in the other way silent film was not entirely without sound in it. A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound, especially spoken dialogue. In silent films for entertainment the dialogue is transmitted through muted gestures, pantomime and title cards. But I suppose it would be very boring to see a film that is entirely silent. There should be some smart guys to change the way.
Both tramp and Big Jim seek refuge in Black Larsen's cabin. At last, Big Jim took Larsen’s gun thanks to his physical strength and claimed that he is the master of this cabin. Then they were allowed to stay. They finally part ways, leaving the hut to go their own ways, Big Jim to his secret mine, the Tramp to his fate. After a long journey, tramp finally finds both love and wealth in this film. Gold Rush was Charlie Chaplin's favorite works, is his most interesting works. In the film's style, the film will be funny narrative, the tragedy of color, clever lyrical tone for the balance of the three combined.
This film was prefaced with historical background. During the Great Gold Rush to Alaska, men in thousands came from all parts of the world. Many of them were ignorant of the hardships before them - the intense cold, the lack of food and a journey through regions of ice and snow were the problems that awaited them. In this story, our tramp went to Alaska for gold with many homeless poor guys like himself. Once tramp and Big Jim went into a log cabin to shelter from the fierce snow storm. But they didn’t know a violent wanted man Larsen was just hided in the log cabin. Then Larsen who was a criminal show up and tried to drive them out of the log cabin.
Responding to the world economic crisis brought about by the suffering of unemployed workers, he decided to use the image of cinema language to cry. Our tramp worked in a factary which was equiped with many kinds of machines everywhere. Here workers like our tramp were made work day and night by the boss. They worked hard almost without a break in order to get meager salaries. The repeated heavy work made our tramp dizzy and he made many mistakes at work. He lost his job. Once, our poor kind tramp saved a woman who had no family on his way home. There were two mouths at home waiting for food. Tramp tried hard to get food. At last he even tried to go to jail for food.
