(3) Professor Taylor argues that there are many kinds of love and that particularly in one kind, which he calls “romantic love,” we are strongly influenced not so much by what we actually feel but by what we tell ourselves about the way we feel. He calls this “self-talk.” For example, say a woman is strongly attracted to a man. (It could just as easily happen to a man attracted to a woman.) She tells herself things like “He is all I have ever wanted in a man! He is warm, kind, and affectionate and will understand all my needs.” But when she discovers that he is, like all of us, just an ordinary human being with both strong and weak points, she is bitterly disappointed.

Exemplification
Key points
Explaining an idea with examples or illustrations is a common writing strategy. Specific examples not only clarify general principles but also make writing more interesting and easier to follow. The examples used to explain general statements should be relevant, specific, and sufficient. Illustrations may be a single example or a series of examples, and are often signaled by relevant verb forms or fixed expressions.

Unit 3
Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words … for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.

(1) This morning when I was reading the paper I was immediately struck by two more examples of how our students’ view of the world is different from that of their teachers’. In the Business section of the “Daily News” (Los Angeles) there is an article about the changes in TV viewing. The other morning article that caught my attention is an example of students’ perceptions of AIDS prevention and education.

(1) We have books on all types of unconventional medicine, for example, acupuncture and faith healing. (2) Knowledge often results only after persistent investigation. Albert Einstein, after a lengthy examination of the characteristics of matter and energy, formulated his famous Theory of Relativity, which now acts as a basis for further research in nuclear physics.

Hypothetical examples (1)
(1) Today’s parents have many problems. What would you do, for example, if you found your child taking drugs? (2) If we searched through Google, we would come across innumerable stock photo agencies. You can use smaller or larger agencies as per your requirement. Let us suppose that you are going to search for images on “chocolates”. You should insert that very key phrase “chocolate” and click the advanced search button. Soon, you will be flooded with desired results.

(3) Changes in meaning also happen when the thing a word describes changes form. The word “car”, from Latin “carrus”, is an example. It originally meant a “four-wheeled coach”. The modern car is not at all like the old four-wheeled coach. The thing has changed, so the meaning of the word has changed, too.

(3) As parents get older and get more experience under their belt, they realize what's important about raising children, and what's not. I take myself as an example: at dinner the other night, I took a cookie sheet out of the oven and told Matthew, my 4-year-old, "Hot". Naturally, being the impulsive, stubborn, curious and intelligent creature that he is, not to mention being hungry, he promptly decided to reach out and try to take the cookie off the cookie sheet, heedless of my warning. Six years ago, with Michael, my first child (who is now 10), I would have shrieked in warning at him, scolding him and, frankly, looking to terrify him into never touching the hot cookie sheet for the rest of his natural life. I love him - I don't want him to get hurt. This time, I just watched as my 4-year-old experienced it for himself. Sure enough, he burned himself, took his hand back, and cried.
