Read《The Grapes of Wrath》Having Feeling

2012011355 孙玉豪师范四班This novel isfilled with sorrow and misfortune. After reading it, for a long time period, Ican’t let the feeling pass. But after watching the movie,which focus on people’s optimistic attitude towards tragic in life.I felt much better. Life is miserable but people are struggling to survive with hope nonetheless.

Originally, I thought America was a wonderful place and I did not expect too much conflict and sorrow for its’people. However, the book left me a deep impression that American farmers have had such a tragic history, which is ,I think, beyond many reader s’ mind.For farmers,four years’ economic panic is really a huge disaster. A large number of farmers lost their land and was forced to leave their home.The process is filled with blood and tears,wrath as well.

The novel has three personimpress me most.They are Tom, grandmother and mother. Tom is a man of integrity, kindness, who is outspoken. So long as he think it is right, even with great cost, he will do it. He is a person who will not bow to the forces of evil. Hence, Tom was loved by his family, also by readers , although the image may seem idealistic. Grandma is a naughty child, stubborn, innocent, but also cute. I really love this grandmother. Mother is the novel's most vivid character, even though she was just a housewife, she is the head of the family. She has a powerful aura to maintain the integrity and dignity of the family, and she has the ability to accept the extraordinary suffering.Disaster can destroy the house, but she will not be defeated.

The novelalso revealed the sins of the big capitalists.Mountains of oranges and grapes were burned. Many pigs buried alive, milk were dumped to rivers. They did so just to keep price, ignoring the need of the poor.At that time, there were thousands of homeless who were hungry and were experiencing starvation.

In the book, farmers who lost their land in central United States were forced to wander. Their dream wasjust to have enough food and clothes and a worm shelter.When they are old, they want to sit in the doorway, watching the sun go down.Young, they want to dance, to sing, to lie down together. This is their hope. However, this humble desire was severely shredded by the harsh reality. They are not the opponents of those cunning capitalists. There is no doubt that large capitalists are cunning and ugly in this book, but the real problem is the capitalist system, which sacrifices interests of the poor to safeguard the interests of big capitalists.

But they are not defeated by the misery. “scared? I am never gonna be scared no more.there was though, for a while as if we were beat,it looks like we don’t have anybody in the wild world but enemies. Nobody was friendly no more. I felt kind of bad and scared too. Like we was lost and nobody care. That’s what make us tough. we are people. They can’t wipe us out, we will go on forever, cause we are the people ”

In fact, each of us will face many suffering in life, but we can choose the way we face it. If we are brave enough to accept the suffering, then nothing can defeat us. I would like to end my passage with this sentence: The distinctive human triumph lies in the capacity to understand the frailty of human striving but to strive nonetheless.
