The generation must be equal to the demand. Otherwise, grid voltage and frequency can’t be guaranteed. The normal load curve has strong regularity. There are new challenges which may disturb this dynamic balance: intermittent renewable energy sources for example.
One of the solutions to guarantee the balance is to use energy storage to compensate the intermittency of renewable energies.

Percentage of a year We need over 25% of distribution and over 10% of generation capacity to ensure a peak demand less than 5% in a year. Make reduction of 5% peak demand can reduce or delay investment in power grid 一年中需要25%以上的配电和10%以上的发电资产(在中国总投资数千亿元)以满足不到5%的时间的 高峰用电负荷。因此,减少5%高峰用电负荷可以减少相应投资或延缓投资。
