Kassim and Ali（2010）采用实地观察的方法，研究马来西亚的加工制造行业工程师经常使用英语的交际场合、交际技能，从而为进一步的英语能力分析提供基础。
这种方法在实际使用中需要观察者遵行客观、全面、深入、持久的原则，才能够更加科学。
Kaewpet（2009）、Cowling（2007）通过非结构式访谈对研究对象的英语需求进行分析。
这种访谈又称为自由访谈，深信访谈等，该方法在使用前没有统一的问卷，而只有一个题目或大致范围或一个粗线条的问题大纲，由访谈者与访谈对象在这一范围内自由交谈。
