Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says.Beehives(蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmers' crops.
In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.
Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.
From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.
Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several
times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.

Organic farming is a big-picture exercise. It's not only targeted at this season's results, but considers future generations. In the long run it makes better economic sense as well. But its main goal is to contribute to a healthier world.
Studies conducted all over the world have shown the effects that conventional chemical farming has on the environment. Certainly, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and her-bicides increase the quantity of a farm's production. They help produce more grains and vegetables. But at what cost?A Swiss study showed that organic farming produces an average of 20% less than conventional methods. But the organically grown food contained 50% less fertilizer and 97 % less pesticides.
Though only a part of the amount of pesticides a farm uses actually does the job of killing bugs, all of it remains active in the soil for months or even years after application.Perhaps worse, each generation of pests is growing increasingly immune (免疫的)to the chemicals used. It's not even all about the food and the soil. The pesticides used in conventional agriculture are finally spilling their chemical residues (化学残留) into the waterways. It affects wildlife, soil and ecosystems as a whole. According to a Worldwatch paper,Deep Trouble: The Hidden Threat of Groundwater Pollution, poisonous chemicals are polluting groundwater on every inhabited continent, endangering the world's most valuable supplies of freshwater.
Perhaps not so intuitive, organic farmin g affects the air.“Organic agriculture can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by effectively locking more carbon into the soil rather than releasing it into the atmosphere,” found “Farming Systems
Trial,” a 15year study. Organic agriculture even uses 50% les s energy than conventional farming.
How does organic farming deal with pests? Organic farmers intentionally build up populations of beneficial insects, such as ladybugs(瓢虫), that eat other pests and control the growth of insects. Wildflowers create green belts that control the spread of weeds and themselves encourage the beneficial insects.
Farmers have to stick to strict standards and practices to earn the label “organic.” Looking forward, by promoting biological diversity and maintaining soil fertility, organic farming creates a natural balance that helps to get high quality food in healthy quantities year after year.
5.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

B.Why organic farming benefits the environment

B.organic farming produces more greenhouse gas emissions
C.conventional farming is better than organic farming
D.the organically grown food does good to people's health
7.By writing Paragraph 3, the author mainly wants to tell us ________.
A.the immune function of pests
B.the effect of chemical residues
C.the great harm of pesticides
D.the benefit of conventional agriculture

Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do.Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continu-ing.In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing.Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient's silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily.A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.

I have been studying the French language, with some consistency, for three years. This field of study has been, all at once, the hardest and most rewarding of my life. I would put it above the study of writing simply because I started writing as a 6yearold boy under my mother's guidance. I always “felt” I could write. I did not always “feel” I could effectively study a foreign language.
But here I am, right now, in a Montreal hotel. I mishear words. I confuse tenses. I can't really use the subjunctive. Yet.
Something has happened to me and the something is this—I have gotten better. I don't know when I first felt it. I didn't feel it this summer at Middlebury, despite the difference in my entrance and exit scores. I didn't feel it when I first arrived in Paris in January. I felt, as I always feel, like I was stumbling around in the dark. I still feel like that. But I also feel like I am getting better at stumbling.
I am emphasizing how I “feel” because, when studying, it is as important as any objective reality. Hopelessness feeds the fatigue that leads the student to quit. It is not the study of language that is hard, so muc h as the “feeling” that your present level is who you are and who you will always be. I remember returning from France at the end of the summer of 2013, and being convinced that I had some kind of brain injury which prevented me from hearing French vowel s ounds. But the real enemy was not any injury so much as the “feeling” of despair. That is why I ignore all the research about children and their language advantage. I don't want to hear it. I just don't care. As CarolynForché would say—“I'm going to have it.”
To “have it”,I must manage my emotional health. Part of that long-term management—beyond French—is giving myself an opportunity to get better at difficult things. There is absolutely nothing in this world like the feeling of sucking at something and then improving at it.
12.The first paragraph implies that the writer ________.
A.is awarded for learning French
B.is confident in his writing in French
C.has a poor gift for language skills
D.suffers in learning French for three years
13.We can infer from the third paragraph that ________.
A.the writer often lost his way in Paris
B.the writer came to Paris to learn French
C. the writer had no trouble speaking French
D.the writer improved his French unconsciously
14.According to the writer, in learning foreign languages ________.
A.the feeling of hope is very important
B.the advantage lies in the learners' ages
C.the real enemy is your brain injury
D.the fatigue leads to the difficulty to read vowels
15.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.Take Pleasure in Learning a Foreign Language
B.Enjoy the Strong Feeling of Speaking French
C.Savor the Temporary Feelings of Greatness
D.Appreciate the High Feelings of Traveling in France
