If no city with the fewest votes is eliminated, the voting continues, until a majority winner is determined. Typically the Games are awarded several years in advance, allowing the winning city time to prepare for the Games. In selecting the site of the Olympic Games, the IOC considers a number of factors, and chiefly among them is which organizing committee seems most likely to stage the Games effectively. The IOC also considers which parts of the world have not yet hosted the Games. For instance, Tokyo, the host of the 1964 Summer Games, and Beijing, that of the 2008 Games, were chosen in part to popularize the Olympic movement in Asia. Because of growing importance television worldwide, the IOC in recent years has also taken into account the host city’s time zone. Whenever the Games take place in the USA or Canada, for example, American television networks are willing to pay specially higher amounts for television rights because they can broadcast popular events live in the best viewing hours.Once the Games have been awarded, it is the duty of the localorganizing committee----not the IOC or the NOC of the host city’s country to provide them with money. This is often done with a part of the Olympic television revenues(收入),and corporate sponsorships(社团赞助),tickets sales, and other smaller revenue sources. In many cases there is also direct government support. Although many cities have achieved amounts of money by hosting the Games, the Olympics can be financially risky. When the financial gains from the Games were less than expected, the city was left with large debts.41. _______will be determined to host the Olympic Games by the IOC.A. comeback—a series of sold-out shows in London. The pop superstar was taken to the University of California medical centre in Los Angeles last night, and doctors tried resuscitation (心肺复苏术) in the ambulance. He did not regain consciousness and was reported dead about three hours later.“My brother, the legendary King of Pop,passed away on Thursday 25 June at 2∶26 p.m.,” his brother Jermaine said.“We believe he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home;however, the cause of his death is unknown until the results of the autopsy (验尸) are known. The personal physician who was with him at the time 1970s,scientists thought that black-footed ferrets had become extinct in the wild.Over the years, the number of ferrets has mirrored the number of prairie dogs (草原犬鼠) in the area.Prairie dogs make up 90 percent of what ferrets eat.Farmers have long viewed prairie dogs as pests, and used to kill them.At the same time, diseases swept through the prairie dog community and wiped out many of them.As their food supply declined, ferret populations suffered as well.In the 1970s,scientists tried to raise ferrets and introduce them into the wild after they grew up.Their efforts failed, and biologists thought that the animals had become extinct. Then,in 1981,a farmer’s dog discovered blackfooted ferrets near Meatiest,a town in northwest Wyoming.State wildlife managers trapped as many of the animals as they could. In total, they caught 18.Scientists from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoological Park in Washington,DC then attempted to feed these survivors. The researchers eventually managed to feed seven ferrets.Over many generations, the group and its offspring (后代) have successfully produced more than 4,800 animals.Since then, biologists have introduced ferrets that were raised by people in 12 other places. At least two thirds of these populations seem to be doing well.To know for sure if the reintroductions are working, scientists will have to carefully study the animals and their progress.61.The black-footed ferrets were once near extinction because______.A.a disease swept through the ferretsB.the number of prairie dogs declinedC.most of them had been killed by huntersD.they couldn’t adapt to the wild62.In the 1970s,scientists tried to________.A.feed as many prairie dogs as possible for black-footed ferrets to eatB.persuade the public to keep black-footed ferrets in their own housesC.kill prairie dogs to keep the balance of natureD.introduce black-footed ferrets into the wild63.We can infer from the passage that________.A.the population of black-footed ferrets will increaseB.scientists will fail to save the black-footed ferretsC.more black-footed ferrets will be caught and raised by peopleD.scientists are sure that the reintroductions are working well64.What do scientists have to do if they want to know whether the reintroductions are working?A.They have to raise more black-footed ferrets.B.They have to ask biologists for help.C.They have to study the black-footed ferrets and their progress.D.They have to introduce black-footed ferrets to some more places.65.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Black-footed ferrets are in danger of dying out.B.How to prevent black-footed ferrets from disappearing.C.What local people have done to protect the black-footed ferrets.D.Scientists are trying to raise the number of black-footed ferrets.CMost children, even the youngest of children, are delighted to be around cats and dogs. But these pets carry plenty of germs and allergens (过敏原),prompting researchers to ask:Are cats and dogs really safe for children?A study finds that, contrary to many parents’ fea rs,owning cats or dogs does not increase a child’s risk of developing allergies, and in fact, may actually protect them. The study’s lead author,Dr.Dennis Ownby of the Medical College of Georgia, said that even he was “very surprised” by the results.Ownby and colleagues followed more than 470 children from birth to age 6 or 7,comparing those exposed to cats and dogs during their first years of life to those who were not.By using skin-prick tests for detecting common allergies, the researchers found that, contrary to what many doctors had been taught for years, children who had lived with a pet were not at greater risk.Even more remarkable, children who had two or more dogs or cats had an even greater reduction,up to 77 percent,in risk of allergies.Researchers suggest this protective effect may be the result of early exposure to lots of bacteria that are carried by dogs and cats.Exposing young children to these bacteria helps “exercise” their immune systems early in life so that they’re better able to resist allergic diseases later.“There’ s something very important in the first years of life when the immune system is developing that we can retrain it away from an allergic response,” said Dr.William Davis. And while researchers are not encouraging parents to buy dog s or cats just to reduce a child’s allergy risk, they say if a family already has one or more animals, there’s no need to get rid of them.66.Why do the researchers feel “very surprised” by the results of the study?A.Because the results are contrary to their expectation.B.Because so many children are playing with cats and dogs.C.Because parents are so much worried about their children.D.Because children with animals may develop allergies easily.67.Compared with children who have pets, those who haven’t______.A.will lose the chance to develop immune systemB.may suffer allergic diseases more oftenC.will reduce the harm from bacteriaD.can keep doctors away68.It can be inferred from the passage that________.A.pets are ill-treated by their ownersB.less families would like to own cats and dogsC.keeping pets is a good way to keep children warned on Thursday.Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are already affected by mental problems such as depression and bipolar disorders and the current market meltdown (崩溃) could worsen feelings of despair among people who can’t stand such illnesses. The United Nations agency said the impact could be especially marked for those living in low and middle income countries where access to treatment is often limited.“We should not be surprised at the turbulence (动荡) and likely consequences of the current financial crisis. Now we are seeing a huge gap in taking care of people in great need,” WHO director-general Margaret Chan told at a meeting of mental health experts.“It should not come as a surprise that we continue to see more stresses, suicides and mental disorders,” Chan warned.Benedetto Saraceno, director of WHO’s mental health, said mental health disorders affected one in four people at some point in their lives.Mental and neurological disorders are often chronic (慢性) and disabling,he said.Nearly 1 million people commit suicide worldwide every year,a large proportion (比例) of whom are young adults.Asked about the financial crisis,Saraceno said,“Poverty can be the consequence of such events, the debts, despair and sense of loss that may reach middle and lower classes.Even the poor can be affected by this crisis.”“There is a clear evi dence that suicide is linked to financial disasters.I am not talking about the millionaire’s jumping out of the window but about poor people,” he said. The global crisis could be expected to affect the “stability (稳定) of communities and families”,according to Saraceno.71.According to the passage, the chief result of the worldwide financial crisis is that________.A.more people will be poorerB.more people will be out of They didn’t even have time to celebrate when the first test flight of the UA V went well. “We needed to list the problems that occurred during the flight and analyze them to find solutions.” he says.“Our UA V isn’t finished yet,but there are many design projects and people with similar interests waiting for me.” Wang says. “The UA V is just the beginning, not the end of my aircraft journey.”1.Why did Wang succeed in doing the research?A.He majored in mechanical engineering and automation.B.He had a good coach and wonderful teammates.C.He loved what he did and would stick to it.D.He was highly thought of by Wu Junqi.2.What does the writer want to do by writing the passage?A.Encourage students to learn from Wang Hongyi.B.Tell readers about UA V development in China.rm readers about Wang Hongyi and his UA V.D.Call on readers to do what interests them.3.What message does Wang Hongyi’s story convey to us?A.Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it.B.Two heads are better than one.C.Interest is the best teacher.D.Actions speak louder than words.BAs Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆).”According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.4.The passage begins with two questions to .A.introduce the main topicB.show the a uthor’s attitudeC.describe how to use the InternetD.explain how to store information5.What can we learn about the first experiment?A.The Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.C.The first group did not try to remember the information.D.The second group did not understand the information.6.In transactive memory, people .A.keep the information in mindB.change the quantity of informationanize information like a computerD.remember how to find the information7.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?A.We are using memory differently.B.We are becoming more intelligent.C.We have poorer memories than before.D.We need a better way to access information.CWindows 8, apart from Windows 95, is the biggest surprise and the only version of Microsoft’s operating system that has been changed from the core (核心) when compared to its former one. However, a recent study has shown that under 20% of business owners would be willing to upgrade to the new version of Windows. The reason for this remains to be discussed and debated, and we will try to throw light on this research by providing you with some of the most common advantages and disadvantages of Windows 8.Generally speaking, there are a great number of plus sides related to upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.Speed—This is the biggest advantage to mention. Boot time has been reported to be up to nine times shorter than that with Windows 7.New passwords—Instead of typing your passwords, Windows 8 will let you use gestures on your favorite photos to enter your password. But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites. Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans. The map is expected to help oceanographers, industry and governments. The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago. David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California. He and other scientists worked on the mapping project. He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean. He spoke to VOA on SKYPE.“The way we’re doing that i s to use a satellite altimeter (高度计), a radar to map the topography (地貌) of the ocean surface. Now that seems sort of strange that you’d map the topography of the ocean surface when you really want to get at the sea floor. But, the ocean surface topography has these bumps and dips due to gravitational effects that mimic what’s on thesea floor.”The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites. Some of the data came from the European Space Agency’s Cryo2 satellite. It was placed in Eart h’s orbit to watch sea ice. The other satellite is the American space agency’s Jason1. It is studying the surface of the oceans. Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by sonar equipment on ships. Sonar works by sending sound waves through the water. When the sound waves hit an object, its presence is confirmed. “That enables us to look at smallerscale features and also features that are buried by sediments in the ocean basins.”The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before. It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart. It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago. They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor. In one place, three mountain ridges join at the same area. Huge tectonic (构造的) plates can be seen clearly there.12.The passage is likely to . A.be an advertisement B.appear on VOAC.make a comment on radarD.appear on SKYPE13.What will be mentioned in the following paragraph, according to the last paragraph?A.The detailed information about the place.B.The more important thing in the ocean.C.The things buried in the ocean.D.Scientists told SKYPE they will explore at the same area.14.Scientists collected and studied information by .A.the Europe an Space Agency’s Cryo2 satelliteB.the American space agency’s Jason1C.sonar equipment on shipsD.the Cryo2 and the Jason115.What’s the best title of the passage?A.Scientists Create New Maps of Ocean FloorB.Scientists Know More Oceans Than MarsC.Oceans Will Provide Us With MapsD.People Know Easily About Mars第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的选项。

With advertisements, customers can save a lot of time in shopping. Advertisements also help factories or service providers find their market. In a word, advertisements have many advantages. However, we also find advertisements a waste of time when we don' t need them, for example, when watching TV programs. To make things worse, some advertisements are misleading andcheating. However, with the sharp rise in the urban population, many problems arise in the development of cities.Firstly, cities become more and more crowded, putting much pressure upon transportation, housing, medical treatment, education, employment and so on. Secondly, city services and facilities can’t meet the demands of the increased population and have been stretched to a breaking point. Thirdly, a growing number of private cars produce huge amount of waste gases, leaving the air seriously polluted. Last but not least, the city is also threatened by rising crimes. Not a single day passes without the report of someone being robbed, or having their houses broken into. All these problems have greatly harmed the attractiveness of the city. But what can we do to solve these problems? First of all, I think, the government should lay much emphasis on the development of rural areas so that more people will be willing to move or live in the peaceful countryside. Also more improvements should be made in the cities to satisfy people’s need. Test 21.一.D C C A C/ A D C B C/ B C B B A二.1.选B,突如其来的疾病使她看不见也听不到2.C3.A4.B5.B6. 选B,从下文可知7. 选B,livea normal life指过正常的生活8. We have both achieved success and suffered from failure. Different students take different attitudes to failure. Some fall in low spirits when they don’t do well in the exams. They usually lose heart and no longer study as before. But most students take an active attitude towards failure. They encourage themselves to be self-confident. They try to find out and analyze the causes so that they will nolonger make similar mistakes. They often turn to their teachers, classmates or friends for advice. I agree with those with active attitudes. As we all know, failulre is the mother of success. Even great men have failed many times before they succeded. So we must deal with our failure correctly.Test 28.一.1. arrange for sb. to do sth. 2. go on a cultural tour 3. lost civilizations 4. be lucky to win a place 5. be known as 6. attend a lecture 7. take over 8. pour out of 9. surrounding countryside 10. be buried alive 11. cause great damage 12. on rainy days 13. set sail for 14. ruins of the Loulan Kingdom 15. be covered over by/ with 16. in memory of 17. in return for 18. carry out 19. neither… nor… 20. on board 21. be in good condition 22. declare war against 23. be involved in… 24. stand in one’s path 25. come down with 26. have a deep influence on 27. have enough of sb. 28. take sb. to court 29. be aware of 30. be put todeath二.1. nor/neither did 2.
