Introduction
Victorian time is an era that British feel proud of but it is not in the case of female because the sexual discrimination prevails in the whole society (Huang Zhenyuan, 2010:190). The story happened in the early 19th century in England. Moreover, the author said that it was a novel without heroes but two female characters, Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Shedly. Becky, nurtured by the under class, a typical represent of female adventurer in the capitalism society in the 19th century, had received higher education, which had resulted her personality distorted for the discriminations she had got was far more than the knowledge. She was very calculating and hypocritical, and used all the means to survive. All she asked for was fame wealth and her desire. She was evil but was almost successful, as the result of the dual effect of era and society. However, she was finally reduced to the bottom of the society after she had divorced with Rawdon Crawley. While another female character, completely contrary to Becky, Amelia was an innocent girl, kind, gentle, pure and noble.Born in a middle-class family, she aspired the ideal love and tenderly loved her fiancé, George Osborne, who was in fact a playboy, though against his father’s will, he got married with her. Nevertheless, Amelia loved him so much, which almost became the only meaning of her life that even after his death she was still very loyal to him and devoted a lot to his son. Thus she did not accept the love of William Dobbin until Becky told her the truth that Osborne had already betrayed her.She was pathetic, poor but also happy for she eventually had a nice husband and a family. Therefore, the analysis of their personalities and attitudes to marriage and love will help us to know the essence of love and marriage, the recognition of women’s self-value and the relationship between their self-value and marriage.
