The General Idea of This Period:

This period is about the reading of the passage School life in the UK. It will help the Ss to learn more about school life in the UK and the differences between that in UK and in China. The Reading Strategy of this unit teaches Ss two basic reading skills, skimming and scanning. Ss are expected to master the two skills and to apply them to their future study.

Teaching Aims

Help the Ss learn how to talk about school life.

(1) Help the Ss to understand the passage better.

(3) How to help the Ss improve their reading ability and understand the passage better.

(4) How to master the important language points in this passage.

Reading strategies (skimming, scanning); discussion; explanation & some task-based activities

Step 1 Greetings

2.Check their homework. (say sth. about their writing)

Step 2 Lead-in

T: In the last period, we learned about some differences between Chinese and British school life. We know the UK has a long history in education and its public schools are very famous in the world. Many children in the UK, even those from the royal families would go to the public schools. Why? Today, we’ll go to the UK schools to have a look. We’ll get some detailed information about the school life in the UK.

Activity 1 Skimming

T: Now we’ll read an article from a school magazine written by an exchange student named Wei Hua, who gives us a brief but clear description about what school life in the UK is like from her own experience. Read the text quickly and answer the questions in Part A on P. 2. For this, try to focus on and identify the most important information in the text.

Check the answers after reading.

T: It’s not very difficult for you to find the answers to the questions. But for this, I do have some questions for you: first, have you noticed where the answers to these questions lie in the text?

Ss: They are either at the beginning or the end of certain paragraphs.

T: Second, in what way did you find the answers?

S1: I read through the whole article and found the answers.

S2: I only read the first sentences of the first paragraph and I found the answer to Question 1.
