Chapter 7 squander

However, the husband spent all the money beforehand and died soon after the marriage. She worked now as Boundby’s mistress, and the latter usually lavished praises on her, so as to exalt himself.
• How did Louisa respond to Boundaby’s kiss. She rubbed her cheek very hard for a long time, demonstrating her great disgust toward Boundaby.

Chapter 1
• Who was making a speech? A teacher of the school.
• What did he emphasize? He emphasized facts.
Chapter 10
• How did Old Stephen communicate with Rachael and the other woman? The three friends worked at the same factory and Stephen finally married his wife. The wife degenerated into alcoholism, and Rachael tried to take care of her. Rachael was careful in order to avoid gossip.

• What did Grandgrind think of himself? What was his plan for the school? He held himself in high esteem as a sober, rational and practical man emphasizing facts.
Chapter 9
• How was Sissy doing in school? She was not doing very well, due to her lower academic starting and perhaps slower mind.
• What did Sissy tell Louisa? What did they talk about? Her father’s love to her and her father’s valuing scholarship and expectation for her.
• What kind of children were the Grandgrind children? They were disciplined and did well in their study, each aiming at something serious and high, but lack a life of color and joy typical of children, because they were forced into the footsteps of their father.

• What did the teachers say about papering a room with drawings representing horses and carpeting with carpets with flower patterns? It was not logical and reasonable, and was wrong, because in reality horses did not run on a wall and people should not hurt the flowers.

• What does the title “Murder the Innocents” mean? The author means that the teachers, especially Grandgrind, were changing the innocent and natural children into distorted and biased people.

• 1. What do you think of the education of Grandgrind’s school?
• What did Grandgrind find Thomas and Louisa doing? The children, headed actually by Louisa, were steeling a peep at the performance of the circus, or vagabond performers.
• How did the talk go? According to Boundaby, there was no way for Stephen to get a divorce because he didn’t have money.

• Who had a talk with Stephen when he came out of Boundaby’s house? An old woman talked with Stephen. She envied him for being able to see Boundaby often, respected him for having worked for Boundaby for many years, and loved him for loving his job.

• Where did Stephen find Rachael this night? On the day when the old woman had a talk with him, Stephen finally found Rachael at his own room that night, taking care of his drunk and sick wife there, having received the notice from the landlady.
• How did Cecilia respond to the proposal? Why? (For discussion) She refused the kind invitations from her father’s circus friends and decided to stay with Mr. Grandgrind, because she wanted to wait for her father there. Otherwise, she believed, her father wouldn’t be able find her in the future.
