During their first winter, over half
of the settlers dieቤተ መጻሕፍቲ ባይዱ of starvation or epidemics (瘟疫).
With the help of the Indians, the settlers learned how to fish, farm, and hunt.
So they gathered together to celebrate the harvests with the Indians. From then on, they celebrate the Thanksgiving Day every year on the 4th Thursday of November!
The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts (栗子), walnuts (核桃) and grapes. The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.
In 1620, the settlers, or Pilgrims (清教徒), they sailed to America on the May flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship (朝拜).
After a two-month voyage they landed at in icy November, what is now Plymouth (普利茅斯), Massachusetts.
All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, At last, they harvested in Autumn.
And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the Lord be fixed.
