A Tearful Monkey
Once upon a time, there was a monkey. Having no parents or any other blood relations, he had not had upbringing of any kind. When he became magically powerful and uncontrollably wild, this fatal weakness of his taught him the lesson of his life: He was held down close to the ground for 500 years by a big mountain brought to bear on him by a master Buddha…
I read about this monkey in a novel entitled The Pilgrimage to the West. This monkey, the novel recounted, was released by a monk surnamed Tang, and was accepted by the latter as one of his dispels and escorts to accompany him on his adventure. After overcoming untold hardships and braving incredible dangers, the monk got the scriptures ans the monkey became a Buddha too.
This story is so interesting that it almost beguiled the whole of my childhood.
Many, many years later, I started to amuse my kid with the same story. One day, when I came to the formidable ordeals the monkey underwent while performing his duty, my son suddenly murmured, “Monkey King is really very pitiable!”
Surprised, I asked why. H e replied, “What‟s the point of accompanying a goo-for-nothing master on his trip to get those worthless scriptures? He should have rebelled again.”
This answer kept me awake the whole of that night. As day was breaking, I seemed to see again the face which often appeared in my dream while I myself was a kid, the face of that monkey of course.
The monkey is weeping!

Contenting Myself with Plain Tea
Human life,it seems to me, needs a placidity of mind. While others may be wining and dining, I‟m content with plain tea.
Not dazzled by other people‟s aura of success and glamour, I‟ll indulge in my simple pleasure. Clearly aware where the credit goes, I won‟t j oin in the rush hope of accepting the prize to be handed to me on a plate. The best a blind follower can do is tailing after the winners. The only alternative is to create wonders of one‟s own.
I stick to the pureness of my pleasure, never escaping from reality. The lotus grows in the mud without being tainted. If, to avoid the dirt, one plants it on dry
clean ground, it simply won‟t grow. The same holds true for human beings. Shrinking from what is ugly, vile and evil only proves the frailty of one‟s character. A person in full possession of mental serenity never stands in fear of being mentally contaminated by the filthy environment. On the contrary, he can exercises positive influences all around. Mencius‟s mother made three removals during his childhood to keep him away from bad influences, which did not pose any problem for her. History does not record any more of such removals after he grew up.
Enjoying the tranquility of mind does not mean hiding oneself in a haven. What is meant is the maintenance of such a mental state in the midst of chaos, i.e. moral immovability amidst kaleidoscopic changes. Only a person who has attained this plane can be a real master of his destiny, contenting himself with the purest and simplest pleasure.

One Point Nine
The conference room was filled with thick tumbling smoke, as were the minds of the conferees with confused thoughts.
The group sent by the Prefecture to inspect the “3-good”* gave the county 98.1 points in total. This very much perplexed the members of the committee responsible for the promotion of spiritual civilization. Of the ten counties in the prefecture, their county had been the most hopeful of winning the competition/ of getting full marks. Why had they taken off one point nine?
Silence, bewilderment and oppressive atmosphere in the room, everyone was racking their brains over the missing one point nine.
“Only one point nine short, … one point nine, …” the comm ittee chairman was puzzling over the problem, blinking his eyes and murmuring the figure.
“Ninety-eight point one, one point nine short,…” echoed the director of the County Government Office sitting nearby. Suddenly he had an inspiration. Giving the table a loud thump, he shot up from his seat, and yelled, “I‟ve got it! It must be because there was no wine at the welcome banquet.”
“One pot of wine saved” means “one point nine deducted”. That at once opened the eyes of everybody to the crux of the problem.
“No wonder,” the manager of the Catering Services Corporation also rose to speak, “the Manager of the Prefecture Corporation hinted to me the moment he came, …Treat the guests fine and everything will be fine.‟”
“Wine and dine, and everything will be fine!”
Silence, bewilderment and oppressive atmosphere again dominated the room.

Smash the Emptied Liquor Bottle!
Festivals are great occasions for happy get-togethers. Whenever my husband‟s friends and colleagues come for a visit on such an occasion, they are bound to have a drink, and he is bound to treat them to the best brew he has been saving for a long time.
A couple of years ago, they drank century-old special liquor, Luzhou
Laojiao, which costs more than 50 yuan a bottle. At a recent party, my husband produced a bottle of Jiannanchun priced at more than 150 yuan. The host and guests very carefully examined the packing and wrapping and gave the verdict that it was genuine. One guest who is more knowledgeable in this aspect enlightened us thus, “The price of this brand rises with each year. They say there are purchasers of such packing boxes and emptied bottles, and each set can fetch as much as 20 to 30 yuan.”
Consequently a discussion arose as to how to dispose of the emptied container.
Some suggested that it be used as an ornament, while others said it should be thrown into the dustbin. My better half acquainted the guests with the way we dispose of liquor bottles. “We usually tear up the wrapping, smash the bottleneck with a hammer and then throw it into the dustbin.”“Otherwise,”he added by way of warning, “someday we might be drinking false Jiannanchun from this very container.”
Our friends all applauded our practice, complimented my man on his wonderful foresight and decided to follow suit in the future.
“Striking hard at producers of counterfeit products should start from smashing emptied liquor bottles,” is the unanimous opinion.。
