Relationship of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Introduction

5,000 years splendid civilization and the unparalleled rich written records of China is approved by world. In the long history of China, Chinese painting and calligraphy reappear this historic evolution by their distinctive art forms and artistic languages. Because using the same tools and method of Chinese painting and calligraphy, they are regarded as the sisters art. For this reason, this pair of art both have complementarity and independence. 1.Formation and Development

Chinese character was evolved from pictures and symbols, its process of writing and development resulted in the generation of the art of calligraphy. The earliest Chinese writing is the oracle in Shang Dynasty, which the words are inscribed on bones or tortoise shells. Chinese painting was called danqing or shuimo in ancient times. Calligraphy and Chinese painting is related very closely, they need the same tools, and is both mainly by point, line. Chinese paintings usually have a poem or inscription, making the calligraphy and painting an integral art, providing more generous Aesthetic connotation.

Calligraphy is a more purified art than painting, the form of painting is more complex and difficult to standardize. Calligraphy use pure point, line to express the beauty of form such as black and white, density, size, rhythm. Because of this, its rhythm is more pure and strong. However, there is some change of the ink color when draw a painting, making picture more rich. The performance of calligraphy and painting are the same, both using abstract style to express author’s aesthetic feeling and mental tendency.
